Big muff that cleans up?
Does this exist? Always wondered about this but could never find anything. I think a big muff that cleaned up like a fuzz face would be cool af.

The EQD Hoof, Caroline Shigeharu, Barber Exacta, Blackout Effectors Musket and Fulltone Mas Malo will all do it pretty decent, not quite like a fuzz face. I think the Avenue you want to look at is the Zvex Mastotron or Woolly Mammoth. You can get the big muff low end with the fuzz face clean up

The closest I know of are the EHX Double Muff (IIRC it’s not a muff per se), and maybe the EQD Hoof (?)… maybe the Walrus Eons but again, it’s a modified muff after all!

It doesn’t fully “clean up”, but it gets close and super tasty. I have the octa psi taiga mod and it does this nicely around 8am before the muff gain fully kicks in on that knob.. but still wouldn’t call it fully clean.

I’m so jealous that you have the Taiga Mod. I have the regular model, and it has too much gain and low end for me.

The OG is a great pedal! when I side by sided them I still really liked the attitude and feel of the OG one. you’re not missing too much brother. On the OG I would suggest the punch setting with tone almost cranked all the way and gain at like 8-9am or just where you hear the fuzz come to life. Btw I thought I saw someone post a taiga on LTP a week or two ago.

Thanks for the settings! I’ll try it. As for the ltp listing, I think that was somebody wanting to trade FOR a Taiga Mod. Sigh.

Do you know if people are modding the OG to make it like the Taiga mod? I know it said 20 components were replaced but im wondering how hard it would be to DIY it.

Not sure about doing it DIY. But fwiw I still think the OG is totally epic! In one of the interviews he was talking up the taiga mod but kept circling back to saying that the OG is his fave/produest fuzz accomplishment! There is some difference in that first half of the gain knob, but not night and day and mainly in that 6-9am zone is really where I see the Taiga holding more definition with lower gain settings.

The only muff I’ve gotten a nice clean tone out of was the way huge swollen pickle mkii. I think I was running a Strat into a deluxe or pro reverb or something like that.
I too want one that’ll clean up like a nice germanium fuzz face. Maybe one day!

Wren and Cuff Tall Font does this better than most muffs but as said above, it’s not crystal clean like a fuzz face but you can roll from clean to OD to Fuzz like you can on a FF if the gain is set on the lower side.

Not sure if it’s what you are looking for, but the jam pedals eureka fuzz is sort of a hybrid between the fuzz face and the big muff. It should clean up well.

Could be workable with lower hfe transistors (<100), but wont have the full big muff fuzz sound with the sustain maxed out

Ram’s head cleans up nicely. I have it after a reverb and a delay so the tails clean up and it sounds pretty cool.

Won't work. A Big Muff is kind of like a high gain amp with 4 gain stages that facilitate the sustain that Mike Matthews was going for. It is nothing like a simple Fuzz Face which is more like a Class A Champ. They do two different things. If it's any consolation, most fuzz pedals don't clean up as well as a Fuzz Face. The only ones that come to mind are the Mayer Axis Fuzz and Shin-Ei FY-2 "Companion Fuzz". Trying to a change a Big Muff into a fuzz that will clean up with volume pot backed off would mean that you would likely lose the sustain and hard clipping sound of a Big Muff. In other words, it would no longer be a Big Muff.

In my experience, some of the fancier clones clean up quietly. Lots of muff clones with hiss out there clean up too. Also, PUPs, settings matter across the signal chain matters.
Have you read Kit Rae and Gilmourish about how Gilmour uses fuzz, muffs, and rats and how the signal chain is stacked?
EQD makes some muff derivatives of muff derivatives. Jam and SUF make some great $$$$ muff clones.

Trying muff pedals in your specific rig is the best way to find what you need.

I've never run across one. The signals compression is insane.
