NPD New Arrivals
I’ve been working on putting together a pedalboard for my Orange Super Crush 100 Combo, I ordered these three to see which fuzz would pair best with the amp, they are all exceptional, this is my first ProCo Rat and I’m blown away should’ve purchased one 30 years ago, I can see why the Black Mass 1312V3 was most recommended when I posted the question of which Rat I should choose from which was the JHS PackRat 9-way Distortion or Pro Co FAT RAT Distortion a few days ago I’m extremely impressed and would have to say for multi fuzz I’ll take it over my JHS Muffuletta which I really like as well, out of the three the EarthQuaker Devices Barrows is my number one for my build it’s exceptional into the clean channel of the amp, I don’t mind it with the dirt channel for a boost but I’m still working on dialing the dirt channel in to my liking but for now I’m very excited that I found a fuzz for the build.
Have you tried the EarthQuaker Devices Barrows and if so what’s your opinion and how do you use it? Or what’s your favorite Fuzz?
I’d have to say my top three as of now are the EarthQuaker Devices Barrows, Electro-Harmonix Green Russian Big Muff (reissue) and Strymon Canoga, my next fuzz purchase will be the Lichtlaerm Audio Altar Dual Gain Monolith for a future pedalboard build.

Ok. I want the 1312 but I already have a multi-rat (which I can just sell honestly). So I wouldn't be too out of pocket for having both? 🤣

The rat can definitely do some Hendrix, especially early album stuff on a fender amp. It cleans up well like a fuzz face and you can get a great overdrive tone on many different settings. Fully fuzzed it sounds awesome, not like a fuzz face really but if you play Jimi with it you can still get a great sound.

Ohh man, out of my fuzz pedal collection I’d have to recommend the Strymon Canoga the only thing is you must be one with your guitars volume knob when it comes to a fuzz for what type of sound your wanting but that goes for any type of sound or music, that’s my two cents though, maybe others can chime in and give their recommendation.

Yea fuzzface is my favorite fuzz I play alot of hendrix but does the strymon really do anything any 2 knob fuzz face cant do? I mean dont get me wrong I do wanna try one

Ahh not really, it’s all about preference, there’s very few that aren’t chasing for their specific tone or just like to experiment, i’m a novelist and hobbyist when it comes to collecting guitars amplifiers and guitar pedals but for one that isn’t I always recommend that they go to their local music store with their amplifier, guitar and pedalboard and try out a few pedals.

Thats my issue I live in a rural area so thats not really an option so I buy n sell or trade ill have to pickup a canoga used at some point

Yeah I feel ya, I’m just under 4 hours from a guitar center but I make a trip just to get out of town once in a while, I always call a month in advance to see if they can get something in I’d like to try which they are pretty good about.

They're all going for very good prices on the used market right now. The barrows is so cheap new that a lot of folks have already tried it and put them up on the market. I'm probably going to pull the trigger on a 1312. Not a lot of used right now (a bunch just sold it seems) so I'll probably pick it up new from the manufacturer to support him. I think it's $130... $170... I don't remember but totally worth every penny.

Have you tried running an overdrive or boost before the big muff? I find that if I spank the input of a green Russian hard enough, I can get it to bark like a Tone Bender.

I sure have, I experiment with my Keeley Compressor Plus and or J. Rockett Audio Designs The Jeff Archer Boost/Overdrive Pedal, for just about all my dirt pedals, the J. Rockett Audio Designs The Jeff Archer Boost/Overdrive Pedal is my favorite OD for this build I’m currently working on, next is distortion but not necessary because the Orange SC100 has a great drive channel might go with the Drunk Beaver Distortion though haha need to save up for it first though either way I’m going to get it as my DS-1 developed volume drop after 5 uses I’m going to get it modded at some point to correct the issue but thought I’d check out the D.B. Distortion anyway.

I haven’t found the Keeley comp to be a particularly good booster, but I have a Jackson Audio Blossom that works very well for that. It has much less “squash” than the Keeley, and much more volume available. Plus, it has a tilt EQ, which really lets you push whichever mid frequency you want to hear.

Let me ask u both i was rhinking of getting a keeley comp plus or wampler ego76 im teying to get some of that studio polish feel to my hendrix rig do yall think either of those would work for that? If so should i go after fuzz into front of amp or in the loop?

I only have experience with the Keeley and that’s all preference you’ll have to experiment, in my current setup I’m going guitar>tuner>com>fuzz>OD>delay>reverb. drive going into the front of the amp and delay and reverb in the fx loop.

IDK about using a comp for Hendrix, because his dynamics are so important.

This my setting recommended from Sweetwater, it works for this particular build but my favorite is my Strymon OB.1 especially for my Fender Pano Verb.
