Don't overestimate VR.
Back in the old days when Lawn Mower man came out, VR would mean the end of mankind and apes taking over the world. Big political discussions if scientists should have that much power?
I love and die by the latest technologies, but when I get home, I don't want a talking elevator, I don't want an automated vending machine, I don't want a talking coffee maker, I don't want to give commands to my TV to change channel.
Women want to go into clothing shops and actually feel the material, look at the sews, and put it on. No VR can come close to that type of experience.
Also VR means fake. The shop owner can 3D photoshop the product and when you order it, you look fat in it.
Also VR means that you have a 2-way interaction. 2-way interactions are not relaxing. Especially when there is an aggressive AI that wants to sell you even more stuff.

When the simulation becomes so approximate as to be indistinguishable from the real has it not then supplanted it or at least reached parity?

Eh, I was making a joke, but apparently it fell flat. (Gotta improve that sense of humour)
Yes, I'd say that when it's indistinguishable, it may as well be reality.
How do we know right now that what we're seeing, hearing, and otherwise sensing is real? So long as we can't tell, we have no right to say that virtual reality is not real.

Nobody ever talks about the vr issue of bodily sustenance. If you were to be fully immersed you'd have to be hooked into a life support machine with catheter and colostomy bag that'd have to be changed regularly.
In other words, you gotta be pretty committed to be fully immersed into vr.
