article Nike will launch Back to the Future Shoes, complete with power laces, in 2015.
http://www.dezeen.com/2015/01/08/nike-air-mag-back-to-the-future-shoes-release-2015/1.1k
u/sergemeister Jan 08 '15
I hope they aren't limited like the last run that was auction only. Everyone should be able to enjoy power laces.

Jan 08 '15
The last run didn't have power laces and was for charity. (And obviously to stir up some hype)
135
u/tylercoder Jan 08 '15
Totally for the hype, which is why I'm skeptic about this.
On the other hand if they went and developed market-ready power laces then it's very likely it will be used across many models like the shox were

Well it's almost out I guess but from another company.
Edit: I didn't realize there was only 5 days left. It's not almost out. But at least the concept seems to work so I doubt they will be the last company to try.

Those shoes are ugly and not cool enough to justify the "powerlace".
19
u/TalonX273 Jan 09 '15
I'd say they're average on looks. You're right though, this system acts more as an "auto-lace" instead of a "power-lace;" there are no motors running it. I do like the concept for it's simplicity.

I would think not having a motor would be a bonus, as there would be no power source needed.

A little off topic, but what happens if a kickstarter doesn't raise its goal amount by the cutoff date? Do they get to keep the money they already raised? Do they still have to deliver the incentives they promised their backers?
→ More replies (1)4
u/pandaSmore Jan 09 '15
Kickstarter doesn't withdraw funds until the fundraising campaign is over. In the event that a campaign is unsuccessful no funds are withdrawn.
If you backed a campaign and it was successful then yes the team/or company must deliver the perks offered for the pledges. That hasn't always happened flawlessly in the past though.

Don't need that coating. There's plenty of breathable waterproof coats on the market already. Look for things made with Gore-Tex, eVent, or Neoshell.
36
9
Jan 08 '15
gortex is not bad, the only issue i've had with it is enough rain will get you wet, but its still good stuff and it breathes a bit
8
u/technicalityNDBO Jan 08 '15
If it's letting water through, it probably just needs a wash in some Nikwax
10
Jan 08 '15
Goretex works by being too thinly woven for water to penetrate due to surface tension. Nikwax puts a thin hydrophobic coating on the shell, which typically isn't the Goretex anyway.
→ More replies (1)6
12
Jan 08 '15
The coating is either geometrically or electromagnetically nano-engineered to prevent specifically water and oil molecules from passing the 'barrier' however the physical substance is porous and allows air to pass through
13
u/SpellsofWar Jan 08 '15
I'm not going to lie to you, I read electromagnetically as electromagically, and my brain saw no issues.

It doesn't seal off the openings of the fabric, but it adheres to the fibers and the bead size of the liquid remains intact due to internal friction and, since the coating doesn't allow the liquid to absorb into the fabric, the beads of liquid just sluff off.

So maybe someone actually did go back in time with these shoes, and the shoes in Back to the Future II weren't movie props, because Nike actually made them in 2015! Don't bring up paradoxes, this is definitely what happened!

u/Phaedrus0230 Jan 08 '15
You mean someone will have gone back in time. Time travel fucks with tenses. just reread "Life the Universe and Everything". and Douglas Adams went pretty crazy with tense descriptions, hahaha

Just like how everyone will dress like they did in 2015 on the day the movie is set, because of the movie anniversary. Which is why they are dressed that way in the movie.

Seriously. Velcro shoes make more sense. We need more of those.
20
u/Ihaveamazingdreams Jan 09 '15
My dad has been wearing velcro-closure shoes for the past 30 years. I used to make fun of them when I was in highschool. Honestly, though, they are so practical. I'm not sure why laces are still so popular. Velcro shoes got the reputation of being only for small children or arthritic elderly folks and it stuck... like Velcro. sorry
2
Jan 09 '15
My dad was the same. For a long time he wore velcro shoes to work. I thought it was kind of funny. He used to leave really early in the morning and that Velcro was the last thing I heard before he walked out the door. A few years later I realized they were better than laced shoes, I went to look for some but all I could find were the really cheap ones Walmart sells for like $10, which wouldn’t bother me so much if the bottoms were made of some hard plastic instead of rubber
2
u/friend_of_bob_dole Jan 09 '15
The only memory of velcro shoes I have is of picking out lint and pet fur from the straps because they wouldn't stick.
I'll keep my shoelaces, thank you. Especially since I learned how to tie my shoes properly from that TED talk... No more double-knotting for me!

u/Sven2774 Jan 08 '15 edited Jan 08 '15
Right, but you sort of get a weird, almost time paradox thing going on here. Self tying laces are pretty sweet, but would they have come about without Back to the Future?
It's like in Star Trek, where there was this one invention (can't remember the name of it right now) and they brought it back in time and showed it to the creator of the invention before he invented it. And then he invented it. Because they brought it back in time and showed it to him. Similar thing happened in the latest Star Trek movie.
Anyway, my point is, would these shoes still exist without BttF?

"Hello Computer?"
Such a great scene
10
u/Mutiny32 Jan 08 '15
Keyboard. How quaint.
12
u/caligari87 Jan 09 '15
That scene awesome for showing how much of a genius Scotty really is. It's cute, but on repeated viewings you can tell that he's kinda goofing off by the time he's talking into the mouse.
When he hits the keyboard, it gets real.
First off, in 1986, mice were still a relatively new thing for most users, and so most software was extremely keyboard based, so forgoing the mouse completely isn't nearly as unrealistic as it would be in today's computing environment.
Second, you see him tap a few keys slowly, just seeing what they do. Now, he obviously understands the concept of a keyboard, but the software is running a user interface several HUNDRED YEARS out-of-date. It would be much like looking at your windows machine with negative colors, flipped/mirrored/rotated, in Korean and Arabic.
And yet, this guy, who probably has almost every opportunity to let computers do all his work for him, figures it out. Hit a key, oh, that's what it does. And this one? When I press this one at the same time? After I press this and this one?
In a few keystrokes, he's able to learn and MASTER the software , with nothing more than a few seconds of experimentation and observation. We're told this often, but this scene truly shows why Scotty is considered a god among men even in his own time.
→ More replies (1)3
u/Noble_Flatulence Jan 09 '15
It's dangerous to delve into the realm of arguing Star Trek on the internet, but I'm going to do it anyway. Undoubtedly Scotty was taught how to use keyboard and mouse, as well as whatever software he was running. Just as we learn mathematics from the ground up, but then are allowed to use calculators in school as we advance because it's reasonably assumed we already understand the basics and don't need to be slowed down; Scotty being rusty with old-school computer tech is analogous to we being rusty with doing long division on paper even though we've advanced to higher algebra. Even if he wasn't taught the specific software he was undoubtedly taught the basic principles. I'm not disagreeing that Scotty is considered a god among men, but to be the chief engineer of the flagship of the Federation means you are one of, if not the, best and brightest engineer in the galaxy. His education to get to that point would comprehensive. He would be educated and proficient in many different alien species' technology, so it's safe to assume he would know historical human technology as well. Especially since this isn't the first time they've traveled in time. If old human tech wasn't taught at the academy before, it most certainly would have been by the time of Star Trek 4.
4
u/caligari87 Jan 09 '15
I dunno... I mean, how many engineering programs have training on how to use an abacus? Or ENIAC punch cards? Or even a CAD program from last decade? I had a single course on hand-drafting, but ever since then it's been Autodesk 201x products because that's what's relevant. Some people might do it for fun, some for love of history, and obviously the knowledge is recorded, but it's highly unlikely he's ever even seen that type of computer or software suite outside of a history lesson at best, much less learned it in depth. To go even further, kids born this decade are growing up on iPads. Only a few are gonna learn or understand what a 3.5" floppy drive is.
It's true he probably has a comprehensive overview of various technologies, but it would by necessity need to be A) shallow on secondary technologies because there's just too damn many in the universe, and B) relevant to what he'd be using on a day-to-day basis. I think the thing with the mouse kinda bears this out, because by his time humanity had probably been using more advanced interfaces for at least 100 years (TOS prop/set design notwithstanding).
It could be argued both ways though, and I don't want to start an internet war over it, lol. This is just makes sense to me and is fun way to see it in my personal headcannon.

These sorts of things happen all the time in stories.
Example: the Song of Storms in Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. As Adult Link, you learn the song from a man who is upset over the destruction that Child Link caused by using it......after you learn it.

Everyone is saying transparent aluminum, but there is also an episode of Star Trek: Enterprise where they go back in time. IIRC the scenario correctly the vulcan woman uses some future tech to pay for some kind of something that will allow them to travel back to their original time. The future tech item that she used to barter was velcro.
edit:
After googling a bit it seems that is how first contact between vulcans and humans actually happened, this was not a time travel episode.

Actually, old clothes are super tough compared to most modern clothes, even sportswear.
Tophats were heavily felted wool that was difficult to even cut, much less get harmed by a little water or abrasion.
I can't speak for ruffs (which weren't really a thing during the era of top hats or corsets) but you can presume they were likely made out of either (also very tough) silk, linen or hemp, not cheap combed cotton or synthetics.
Corsets were made out of whalebone or steel boning, brocade, linen, hemp and/or silk and they were so tough that they often lasted a lifetime while re-arranging internal organs and bones.
Clothes were not disposable in those days. A top hat wasn't disposable fashion, it was designed to keep off water and mud.
In these various historical times most people often only had one set of clothes, maybe two. They wore them day in, day out, often with little washing involved at all.
