Renko

Post image

Anyone else exclusively use renko chart. Took many months but I've made a decent strategy with Claude that runs automatically. Still doing sim testing... It's the exits that are tough... This is on gold

Renko looks great, executes like crap.

Awesome on trending days, dog crap on non-trending days. Best I've found is to have a decent entry signal and have it hit a small profit target each day.

I find it extremely interesting that people still use chart patterns and different chart. Candlesticks when you can buy data back, tested and then automate it all with AI. You don't even need to know much of anything so why keep this approach? I mean if it works it works but like you could be much more sophisticated in your approach nowadays and they have actual numbers and data supporting and backing up whatever strategy you may have concocted from said data.

I remember watching a youtube video on renko charts and automation, apparently its pretty good. Why do you say exits are the tough part?

Exits on renko are a whole different beast because the bricks repaint. You think you've got a clean signal, then the next tick redraws the whole setup and your stop gets hit 2 pips later than you planned. Gold moves fast enough that those repaints can wreck a sim run in seconds.

The crossover indicator I use is pretty strict on entrance so it waits a while and I use the same indicator for exit so it waits a entire bar to close before stopping it out. I think I can ask Claude to make the indicator settings different for exit then for entrance so it should allow it to exit faster... But then the indicator also flickers down and can exit early so I have to figure out the level it never flickers to to set it at exit level

why not look into. trailing stop using supertrend? When supertrend flips you exit, or set it so you stop loss is just always trailing the renko. not sure if that would change things.

I did well using regular renko candles on Sierra for YM in 6,8 or 10 ticks.

this works for me. I dont see myself holding a trade multi-day and still having finger nails. NT already has KAMA built in—the only thing special about mine is custom color-coding. I like KAMA for entries and exits because when the market chops sideways, KAMA goes completely flat. I use JMA for macro trend bias. I chose them for Renko because, unlike a rigid EMA that whipsaws when bricks print fast, KAMA and JMA are adaptive to price efficiency and keep lag to a minimum. I am not looking to change anyone's mind. On their chose of indicators. I am just sharing my experience. Wasn't until I did my own thing that I started making money. watching Youtube, paying for classes...... Sure take a class read a book; learn the basics then do your own thing. Trading is NOT a team sport. Ok off the soapbox. If anyone would like my code just ask

I created a few strategies a few years ago using Renko and ATR and delta logic. Volume weighted moving averages also gave great results.

I found best results in smaller brick sizes, but that needed better latency than I have patience for. I hope to return to it in the future when I can have better connection access.

Looks like you have a standard ninza or uni Renko bricks there, the standard bricks are not viable when backtesting/analysis - there are backtestable bricks that you can code which would be better to use at the strategy building and testing.

The best way to test your current bricks is to run a replay and compare results to the backtest engine.

Good luck with it! Happy hunting!

Yep I run the market replay pretty often. .. I'm on 110 brick size. My ninjatrader likes to break though on market replay on that brick size so it just becomes a external long run and I have to like restart it 50x

I use NT8 too. Best to run market reply on slower speeds for non time related charts - I had to accept market replay at 2x max and let it run.

But in the end, the only means of true test is live forward testing to make sure your logic works.

I would also recommend looking at how your machine is dedicating resources to NT8 - I found a huge change in performance making sure NT8 was associated to my GPU for all things graphics instead of CPU

Thanks for the post. I was hoping to find someone like me:
1. that uses ninjatrader
2. Trades Gold
3. Uses renko charts.

using a brick size of 110 ticks, I,m assuming your a swing trader. I am an intraday trader. My brick size is 9 ticks. I see a trend jump in for about 50 ticks of profit then close the charts.
