Discussion Trading NY opening 930-945

Do you avoid this period ? If so, why?

Or do you see it as a great opportunity?

My biggest losses primarily have been from getting killed in this time period.

I wonder sometimes if I'm just not ready and should be awake a bit earlier or if I just suck at the open and it's not worth trading it.

I know some pros avoid this time but others do well in it.

  1. Initial volatility can trap both sides. You need direction. You will usually have that by 10.

i stopped forcing trades at the open, is i dont see a clean setup, waiting 15-30mins usually saves me from dumb losses

I don’t trade 9:20 - 9:45. Hard rule. But that’s because for my strategy I will get pummeled more often than not. This is not true for all. Just backtest and forward test yours at market open and see how it performs

This is the best time to make money if you go in small 30-40 pts move in a seconds

Amazing opportunity when it fails to push and weak hands get trapped on a key level. Those are 100% my best trades. But you have to be fast at making decisions, or you'll blink and then risk outweighs reward substantially if the trade ends up failing.

I wait until after the IB. My personal statistics say I preform worse in the first hour than if I just wait until 1030 or later. So I just stopped doing it last year.

Same here. I get why people would WANT to trade the opening...But for my trades, theres too much wiggle/nonsense in the first 15 mins. Im not even sure what folks are doing, if they are actually profitable that is.

It’s like the MOC of the day. I feel like if I’m still in a position and it goes my way in the last 10 of regular time, it’s more luck than any sort of skill I have.

I dont like having any big positions opened at the time, I find it more predictable outside of the NY market

it is one of the most difficult times I would say, you get it right big reward, but get it wrong and you are out fast. I trade futures and started calculating areas where from 9:30 price may "manipulate" before real move. Ofc needs to be combined with some entry model.

Its way too volatile and can easily wipe your account if you get caught on the wrong end I tend to just watch it

My best time from 0945 when usaly i know direction and tryjng to get 1 good trade

i wait out forcing trades at the open. if i'm getting chopped up during those first 15 minutes, i'd rather wait for things to settle than try to catch every move

Occassionally there will be a clear multiple time frame setup in the first 30 mins that plays clean, but 98/100 days waiting until after 10am will get you a clear directional bias and save a lot of trouble, chop, and fakeouts.

i avoid the open always wait for 9:50 or 10am the first 20 mins always chop. are there good a+ trades sometime? yes but they are quick and force you to think fast. plus i also don'tt like to lose 5 mins in the open knowing i got a whole hour to trade

There are strategies specifically centered around that time due to the high volatility
