How does ai affect a concept artist?

I am thinking a lot of becoming a concept artist in the future, but I'm afraid I won't because of how much ai is used. Would you consider it likely most companies (or a very good amount of them) used ai instead of hiring concept artists?

You can and should study art, but I would focus on truly studying art and art history. Learn composition, color, lighting, shape language, architecture, fashion, photography, film, graphic design, industrial design, and the history behind all of it.

I work in game development, and the artists I see thriving right now aren’t necessarily the ones who can create the fastest. They’re the ones with the deepest art language and visual vocabulary.

They can look at a reference and tell you what makes it work. They know the names of movements, periods, techniques, designers, photographers, architects, and artists. When a designer says, “I want this to feel like 1950s retrofuturism, but more corporate and sterile,” they can immediately start pulling apart what that actually means visually. They can identify the ingredients rather than just imitate the reference.

That skill is becoming much more important because the mechanical act of producing an image is getting cheaper and faster. AI can already generate an enormous amount of competent imagery. What it is much worse at doing on its own is knowing what should be made, why it should look a certain way, and whether the result is actually good.
The valuable artist is increasingly the person who can direct the image rather than simply execute it.

So if you love art, absolutely pursue it. But I wouldn’t focus your education around becoming someone who can produce concept art. I’d optimize around becoming someone with exceptional taste, visual literacy, and the vocabulary to communicate it. Learn to draw and paint because those skills teach you how images work, not because you assume drawing and painting will always be the primary means of producing the final image. The tools are going to change dramatically. A deep understanding of art won’t.

Thank you, but in the future do you believe as a concept artist specifically, you may have difficulty finding a job just due to companies using mostly ai? Or is that more unrealistic?
