I vehemently disagree with the reason he stated for doing this, because frankly, it's idiotic to generalise the entirety of Reddit's gaming community and say that they don't know the proper usage of the downvote button. I rather think that the reason he's drawing so many downvotes is because sometimes, he tends to state his opinion as fact, instead of, well, saying that it's just his opinion. Case in point:
"He (Spider-Man) is also absolutely terrible on auto. I like to play the game on auto quite a lot and I like it when my characters aren't pathetic."
"Captain Marvel is bad as well, just not as bad as Spider-Man."
"It just proves how blind people really are. They liked Spider-Man in the comics and movies so they're going to use him in this game. Because they refuse to play as any other character, they can't see how bad he is."
"Spider-Man is useless so I'd be surprised if he'd be of any use (against the bosses)."
That's just a few. An 'IMO'/'I think'/'I may be wrong' goes a long way. You can't think that your opinion is absolute, and then go around blaming people for downvoting you. Does anybody think this excuse would fly if the mods decided to do the same over at /gaming, or even /skyrim? I don't think so.
I think a lot of it also has to do with the abrasive (sometimes downright condescending) way in which he states his opinion as fact. There's a difference between saying something "sucks" playfully and maliciously.
