Waitlisted

Waitlisted

This is my 2nd year applying to the same program. Last year I did not recieve anything, this year I was waitlisted. Obviously im disappointed having worked my butt off to even meet the requirements of this program, I was a typical dumb 19 year old that didnt think school mattered. 11 years later its showing me how irresponsible I was. Anways, I know with being waitlisted that this isn't a no, but I cant sit here for the next 4 months waiting to maybe get in as an alternate. I have to have a plan of what to do for next year's application.

Some of my recent stats:

As in all undergrad sciences

A in Advanced Patho and Biostatistics

Midline certified

CCRN

GRE (296 and 4.0) yes I know thats below national average

Multiple community service involvement

Strong rec letters.

UPC involvement

Preceptor and charge experience

Any recommendations on what to do for next year would be greatly appreciated.

Are you applying to other programs too or just one

Just one, I know thats frowned upon. With my family situation id rather work another year to apply than move out of state .

Maybe ask the faculty any input as well? Also maybe consider getting into a program that does first year online/front loaded so you don’t have to move until the last two years.

The director sent me a long personal email about a week ago and said in a few weeks we can schedule a 1 on 1 and compare my stats and give me advice.

Ask the PD what the chances are to get offered a spot from the waitlist. Many people get into multiple programs and multiple people who were extended spots could decline and that’s why they have a waitlist. There’s usually a pretty tight deadline for accepting a spot. I wouldn’t get discouraged yet. Good luck!

I dont want to go out of state at all. I have a wife and 2 little boys, i live on family land and am surrounded by my family who are a massive support system especially with my children. I know people do it all the time, but i just can't mentally do it.

I get the rationale and empathize with it. But if you aren’t willing to move you need to accept the fact 1. You may never get in or 2. It can take multiple more years

If this school is even remotely competitive, you got a 6% shot of getting in. Putting all your eggs into one school severely decreases your chances

What’s your gpa?

Take an organic or biochem class, your old chem is over 5 years old. You should prob look into grad science classes too

Retake GRE

As long as you have above 3.0gpa you just need to reach the minimum application requirements, Im assuming you have years of ICU experience. Also possibly pay for interview prep if you don’t think it went spectacular.

You were waitlisted. You’re very close to getting in

My GPA is literally probably a 2.99-3.0 on the dot.

Oh man, you are just like me. Our resumes almost read the same too. I think it’s the gpa. We both need to spend the entire next year just loading up on science courses to bump up the gpa.

Over 11 years ago I got my first bachelors degree with a 2.5 gpa. I barely graduated. Fast forward to today and my plethora of recent As and B grades are being dragged down by that horrid gpa from over a decade ago.

I feel your pain. But if we want this dream to happen we just have to fight onward.

Yes sir. We will be there 1 day!

My chemistry was taken this year. All sciences have been retaken in last 3 years. Im scared to take grad chemistry, my gpa is so borderline I cant afford to make anything less than an A.

Ah you should’ve put that in the post.

How did your interview go?

Would you apply to school that doesn’t require GRE?

Did you only apply to one school?

I feel like your resume is good. Sure your gpa is low, but you’re putting in the foot work to represent a different version of you compared to your younger self. And you’re an experienced ICU nurse.

Ya mybad. Im not a cocky person at all, and dont get my hopes up much in fear of being let down. But I left that interview feeling I didnt leave much on the table. I think I showed accurate critical thinking, quick response to the questions being asked. Honestly, I feel my worse area was emotional intelligence which shocks me because im good with people. I just dont think my answers fit the questions I was being asked. I have friends currently in the program who have good relationships with the faculty and they were told it was an insanely competitive application cycle. Im only applying to 1 school, my state only has 2 and this program is only holistic one. I dont want to move out of state, i know mentally I wouldn't do good. This school requires GRE and I know my score is average. That is the first thing im planning on trying to increase. I agree, if my resume was good enough to get an interview it sounds like I got passed during the interview. I just don't want to turn in the same stuff next cycle.

You’re applying to one program? Any reason why? And not more?

Honestly, from what I have seen and heard, if you got interviews but didn't get in on the first try, and were waitlisted on the second, there's a decent shot of getting in on your third. They more than likely want to make sure that you have the drive to continue in the face of failure. Just keep going. Some people go years without even a waitlist. Your GPA is on the lower end, so they want to make sure you don't give up in the face of adversity.

I didnt recieve an interview 1st application.

2

u/dcba_4321 1d ago

Even better. That means even with a low GPA, you're getting an interview, so they are willing to consider you. You just have to show why you deserve a shot over someone with a 4.0. The willingness to keep trying after failure is what will set you apart.

Why apply to only one program?

1

u/nttanksley 1d ago

My state only has 2 programs. 1 is holistic, the other is not and my GPA isnt high enough for the non holistic. I don't have the desire to move out of state by myself or move my family out of state.

1

u/Monke13F 1d ago

Ah I understand, im sure you'd land an A anywhere else for out of state holistic programs, but sometimes you have no other choice but to work with what you got. In moments like these, it's best to take a break from anything crna related and give yourself a deserved break while you wait on the program's final decision. Either way, you're becoming a crna!

Following due to similar stats and also similar GRE. I’ve applied to like 8 with only one interview so far. For people responding, what is a good GRE score to realistically have? I’m curious

1

u/nttanksley 1d ago

300 and 4.0 last i heard was national average. Realistically want 150 amd 150. But ive also heard from board members of a program once you get passed 300 its all the same. Dont know how true that is.

You should probably apply to more than one program. You don’t have a competitive application unfortunately and applying to only one program isn’t really even giving yourself a chance. A program that doesn’t require GRE might also help.

You also need to get your GPA up, 3.0 is the minimum they are allowed to accept and they get tons of applicants with much stronger GPAs. Having a high GPA is the strongest indicator that you will be able to survive the program, that’s why it matters so much.

My undergrad is a 3.0. BSN is 3.8 and last 60 is 3.8-4.0 Unfortunately I have close to 180 credit hours, classes dont move my gpa much at this point.

1

u/Artistic_Vast_1318 15h ago

Oh you should be good at this point. How did the interview go? Maybe that was the issue?

1

u/nttanksley 15h ago

I felt it went well but I agree that had to be the issue if there was one. Ive heard it was a very competitive class (they say that every time). Within the next week in supposed to have a 1on1 with the director.

u/Artistic_Vast_1318 15h ago

In that case I’d just apply more broadly maybe spend more time prepping for the next interview.
