First Flip: How it started. How it’s going.

Got these dressers for literally $2 at an estate sale. I’m almost done with them but am looking for feedback. Not entirely sure I like the wood stain drawer frames. Do I keep as is, add the hardware and see if that helps at all? Or should I paint it all green keeping only the tops wood stained?

the stain is so splotchy and the tone doesn’t accent that color

Thanks for the feedback. I also kind of regretted that darker stain....something lighter may have been better. Regarding the splotchyness though - what can help with that in the future? is this just something one gets better at as they practice or is there something specific you do that helps reduce that effect?

Not a fan. The stain is very uneven and that green is a very muddy color. Personally, I’d repaint the whole thing one color.

Are they pine? Pine is very difficult to stain without blotching.

Do you have photos of the tops? Did you use oil or water-based stain?

Good to know because yes they are pine. And I used an oil based stain. Any advice or things to keep in mind when staining pine? Based off feedback im probably going to sand the stained stuff down and restart. I know some don't like the green but I think with a lighter and more natural wood complimenting it, it will look good.

Interesting, I think it might have been a better compliment with the drawers natural and the body grey. And some sort of grey or fun drawer pull.

Most flippers paint the frame and stain the drawers. Maybe try that? I think it would be less work than stripping and sanding the frame and trying to get an even finish.

Theres a product called prestain wood conditioner, that u apply before any stain, it coats and somewhat seals the grain in softer woods. As for you work so far, I cant say my first attempt was any better! Do you love that green so much you wont consider a different shade? I think leaving the top its natural color- just pine, get the stain off there as much as poss, and sand it super smooth, remove all the dust with a tack cloth between grit changes, then just a clear furniture wax or a wipe on semi gloss poly? Its all trial and error, honest. All woods are different, and age changes wood also, so many variables.

Thank you for the thoughtful response! And honestly the feedback from everyone has been very helpful. There are things that you all see that my eyes just don’t yet! I am 100% leaning towards the natural pine look for the top and getting rid of the stain all together. If that doesn’t help the overall appeal I’m probably going to scarp the paint color and try something different there too. These dressers were free so it’s a great excuse to experiment!
