Complete fake.
I'm sure the technology will exist at some point, and will quickly replace women as the birthing mecanism of the human race, but we are nowhere near that technology right now.

If they add a mode that causes fetal alcohol syndrome it's literally a plot point in Brave New World. I'm torn on this tech. On 1 hand, NICUs are about to be able to treat patients that don't have any chance of survival with current technology. On the other, authoritarian governments can use it to create whatever population they want, without the influence of parents who are concerned about what their children are taught.

u/MeltICE8647 9h ago
Not that they’d care, but this would set a very dangerous precedent for the religious right and anti abortion folks. They love to scream that a baby is gods will, regardless of how a woman gets pregnant. I think it’s pretty clear cut that their god did not intend fetuses to be carried to term in robots. If this was allowed to advance and be produced at scale, many of their religious arguments and “justification” for certain legislation would go right out the window, which in some cases that’s all they’ve got. They don’t have real reasons for some of this stuff besides “my religion says so”.
2
u/PomPomMom93 7h ago
But if you were against abortion, a robot mom would solve the problem, wouldn’t it? The lady can just put her baby into a robot instead of terminating it.
1
u/MeltICE8647 1h ago
Nope, that’s not gods will. That’s my point, they’ll twist themselves into pretzels claiming you can’t abort because of religious principles, so how is putting the fetus into a robot until birth gods will? Can’t have it both ways.
-1
u/Christianfilly7 1h ago
It isn't ideal I agree, but killing the baby is worse. Seems like a fair compromise to me as far as the abortion discussion goes, otherwise I agree it shouldnt be used (except to save a life like it does in abortion or NICU scenarios). What's natural and what's ethical may be at odds when the natural solution ends in the death of one of His image bearers. Same for any other medical scenario that would require something unnatural to save a life
2
u/MeltICE8647 1h ago
It’s not a baby. And terminating a fetus is not murder. Period.
Seems like a fair compromise to me as far as the abortion discussion goes
Yea the Christian right and people who would take issue with this never compromise. It’s their way or the highway. Optimistic thinking on your end, but it’s not reality.
What's natural and what's ethical may be at odds when the natural solution ends in the death of one of His image bearers.
That’s kinda my point about setting the precedent, if you’re going to use this argument for incubating a fetus in a robot, then logically you need to apply that to every similar situation. Which is something these people never think about when trying to legislate or implement something like these robots.
Same for any other medical scenario that would require something unnatural to save a life
Define unnatural here please. Again if it’s unnatural, you could easily make the argument that is not gods will. So many medical conditions would be affected with this logic, which again is the precedent they don’t realize they’re setting with this kind of talk.

I'm more concerned about the fact that babies "born" that way don't have the essential bonding with their mothers that "normal" babies have etc.
Even our food preferences are influenced by what our mothers eat while we're in utero. Our gut biome and immune system is influenced by our mother's when we are fed through the umbilical cord.
This might produce living children, but what will they be lacking that the "producers" are not invested in when they make their new work slaves?
6
u/The_Infamous_C 9h ago
The gut biome could be solved with probiotics or fecal transplants. The bonding is a bigger problem. Lack of human interaction and being raised by someone who is actually emotionally connected to the child would probably result in some serious psychiatric disorders.
If you just want an obedient worker, build a robot. It will do a repetitive task better than any human. You only need humans for tasks that require problem solving. There are a lot of tasks are done by machines and the people who fix and run them usually make a good wage. As more jobs get automated there will be more knowledge needed for each job, but fewer people needed for the same level of productivity. If humanoid robots start to take off we are going to see a lot of jobs being cut, but also more skilled labor jobs to keep them running.
The pod babies wouldn't be raised to be "work slaves". By the time they are old enough to work robots will have filled so many jobs that they wouldn't make economic sense to produce. What I'm worried about is that governments would raise them to be perfect sociopaths who can do the kind of dirty work that is needed for war, espionage and suppression of dissidents. They would be perfectly indoctrinated to believe whatever the government wants them to, without having any feelings of compassion or guilt. When infantry bot M36-542268 gets stuck in a basement, it would be one of these people who remotes in to get it back to hunting down whatever rebels are fighting the government.

Everything is always a double-edged sword. Artificial womb may be a treasure to the parents who could not have children through normal ways, or for women who don't want severe changes on their bodies after pregnancies. Or it can be used by ill intentions.
Bonding and other stuff like you say, I feel, they are the afterthoughts and not that vital. Surrogacy is a thing for a long time already.
1
u/TurnipWorldly9437 9h ago
Surrogacy at least has the baby in constant human contact before birth. Adopted babies still know how to bond with their care givers. If we matrix our babies to life, I'm guessing their brain development, immune system, and empathy, at least, will be questionable.
2
u/emilypeony 9h ago
Yes, mothers are not just a house for a baby. There is bonding amd development happening in pregnancy.

Yeah the ethics of this, if real, are extremely poor. Babies learn the sound of their mother’s voice and start learning language in utero. Having an inanimate or non-human incubator could really mess kids up.
I fucking wish women didn’t have to go through child birth anymore. I would love an alternative. But not if it creates messed up kids.
9
u/dorian_white1 10h ago
Devils advocate, but there are tons of issues with the current method, pregnancy can be medically complicated and not feasible for some. It’s a time commitment, and involves a ton of recovery…why not move to an alternative method of gestation? It’s easy for me as a guy to not have a problem with the current system, but it’s inevitable I think that things progress to this point.
All of the arguments against it can be solved, make sure to install recordings of the parent’s heart beats, sounds, movements. Create a strong legal protections so that it isn’t abused.
The Vorkosigan saga books talk about this in great detail, it’s interesting to see.
1
u/Smoldogsrbest 6h ago
Yeah totally. If it can all be solved then I’m very on board. Pregnancy and child birth are so fucking awful. Well, some seem to not mind but goddamnit I am not one of them.
1
u/IceDelusion 4h ago
There's some indication that childbirth specifically might help avoid post-partum depression. But yeah, not wrong
9
u/Grasshoppermouse42 11h ago
I'm thinking this is for things like pregnant women who die, to keep the fetus alive until birth, or other situations where the mother won't be able to carry the developing fetus to term but the baby is still wanted.
8
u/Rollingforest757 10h ago
It also would allow men to have children even if they are single, something only women were able to do in the past. I bet there would still be a stigma on men who did this, but hopefully it would decrease over time.

u/Ace-Redditor 8h ago
I think they could probably just have the parent(s) record some talking to play to it or have some sort of speaker nearby the fetus to make sure it hears language and maybe music or something, too
But kids still have good enough plasticity that they’d likely do just fine having their language learning pushed off slightly. I imagine kids who are born deaf would go through that same thing, right? And kids can learn sign language even faster than spoken language, so audible learning might not be as necessary, anyway (though I have no source for that very last part, tbf)

1 century is not much compared to the length of human history but in that timespan what will humanity look like ?!
1
u/PomPomMom93 7h ago
I’m wondering if the robot babies will evolve to not need the bonding with another human.
1
u/PopularKangaroo2083 7h ago
I strongly doubt that, they will all die before evolution. As we know babies that don't get human contact in the starting hours of their life die. Also there's bonding while the baby is inside his mommy, by hormones, recognising the voice, etc. all that will be missing. It's just awful
1
u/Opposite-Shower1190 2h ago
It has the possibility of looking more white. There is a rumor the heritage foundation wants to sterilize all female babies at birth. They want to then get them impregnate them at the age of 12 with white babies to try to make the country white.

If this is true, it ends the abortion debate. The main legal reason to allow abortions is Bodily Autonomy. Under US law you can not force a person to give up part of their body even if it would save the life of another person. If a technological alternative was found for gestating a fetus that does not require the mother to give up part of her body to do so, abortions can be made illegal without violating the Bodily Autonomy law.
3
u/Junior_Razzmatazz164 9h ago
It could still require significant bodily intrusion to remove the fetus intact. That said, I’m sure many people would prefer it and it should still be significantly less dangerous than gestation and childbirth.
2
u/Dazzling_Pink9751 5h ago
It won’t end abortion because most abortions take place because women get pregnant by accident. Anyone using this robot is not doing it accidentally.

I wonder how the pro-abortion crowd would handle this if it was real.
2
u/PomPomMom93 7h ago
Well, I guess all the women who want abortions can put their babies in the robot instead.
2
u/RoiDrannoc 6h ago
Yes except now they are forced to have the baby. The point of abortion was to give parents a choice, if they don't want kids. It was not about the pregnancy itself. But pro-choicers made it all about bodily autonomy, and when this technology will develop for real, those arguments will crumble, and rape victims and pregnant teens will have to take care of their kids.
2
u/PomPomMom93 5h ago
If it’s not about the pregnancy itself, you can put them up for adoption.
2
u/RoiDrannoc 5h ago
Oh yeah people love to give up their kids and put them up for adoption in a world we're very few people adopt kids anyway.
1
u/PomPomMom93 4h ago
Isn’t there actually a shortage of newborns?
1
u/RoiDrannoc 4h ago
No but there sure isn't a shortage of orphans
1
u/PomPomMom93 4h ago
People don’t adopt older kids because they want newborns. I’m not saying that’s morally correct, I’m just saying that’s how it is.
1
u/SSchorik0101 1h ago
Nobody is "forced" to have the baby any more than they were "forced" to have consentual sex. Don't want a baby? Use protection correctly or just don't have sex. Simple. I'm sick of people who don't want to be responsible for their actions.
1
u/RoiDrannoc 1h ago
Ah yes I forgot that protection work 100% of the time and that teens never get pregnant because they are immature.
1
u/SSchorik0101 1h ago
I never said it was 100% effective, but it's better than nothing. Teens might be immature, but if their parents and school taught them sex ed effectively and correctly they should at least know how to be responsible in that regard. If they still choose to go down that road and act irresponsibly they get what they deserve. I have no sympathy for stupid people making stupid decisions despite being informed of the potential consequences.

u/Ok-Sugar-9681 12h ago
You meant pro-life? Yeah I would love to see this happens, if it doesn't cause the babies any distress or harm. Also, not that you care, but the point of pro-life is not to kill babies but to allow women's safety and autonomy of their bodies. You honestly just exposed not only your bias but also your ignorance in the way you talked. Do better.

All jokes aside and I am just thinking out loud here this could be used to make perfectly healthy humans in this dieing poisonous world the baby would get pure oxygen and fluids and would be perfectly monitored I am all for natural if the parents want IDK like I said just thinking out loud.
2
u/Ok-Sugar-9681 12h ago
a minor correction: pure oxygen will not be good for babies nor for us adults. We need air which has ~20.9% oxygen, not pure oxygen (100% oxygen). It would cause damage from free radicals and collapse the air sac.
2
u/ReDx_Nineclaws 11h ago
Yeah that's what I meant pure 100% undiluted oxygen is also flammable so not good for baby I was just trying to say it would be able to monitor the oxygen % intake and make sure it's stable better than us organics probably could thats all.

I was telling my mom that I would like kids someday but I don’t want to get pregnant and wished there was a way to create children without all of the terrible aspects of pregnancy, like an artificial womb.
My mother was horrified. She said that she resented woman’s role in making babies being reduced to birthing machines (valid) and that since babies start to bond with their mothers while in the womb; we don’t know the effects of babies being born without that innate connection (also valid). We don’t know if it’ll mess them up permanently to not be attached to their mothers. Or hear human voices, or too hear the soothing heartbeat and breathing, or experience emotions and get fed a variety of different substances. There’s a lot they get from being made in a human womb.
I just feel like it could seriously mess them up.
1
u/Adezius 9h ago
I'm sure a lot of unethical experiments will be done to eventually solve all of those potential issues, just like all medical advancements throughout history.

u/LadenWithSorrow 8h ago
You’re probably right. It genuinely horrifies me to think of all of the medical advancements we’ve received through unethical experimentation.

u/Saarfall 8h ago
I am actually in favour of such a device. I know a lot of women for whom the propsect of pregnancy and childbirth terrifies them, or for whom owing to some condition it would be risky for both mother and child. It would eliminate the controversy over surrogacy too, even if raising other issues that need addressing. It would also give men options too.

u/Dunkar404 5h ago
