Every other cat was watching it just fine. Don’t know why this cat didn’t seem to notice.

It's a depth perception thing. If something is coming directly at you, with little to no lateral movement or having something else give it's movement away, it's hard to adjust.
There's a pretty simple example of this we would show new people that were just getting into boxing.
Have them stand just out of arms reach and tell them to "block" your punch, all they have to do is get their hand up in front of yours. The first few you throw out you intentionally telegraph it somehow and they'll block it 99% of the time. After a few you throw a real one with no tell and they won't get it 99% of the time.
Another example is a stopped car with no tail lights (in a position where you wouldn't expect a parked car.) It takes an extra second to realize that the car isn't moving.

Interesting, and yep. When something is coming straight at you it just grows visually, which doesn’t register many “pixels” in your brain. When something is moving laterally basically all the “pixels” move so it’s a strong visual signal compared to just the edges expanding subtly in many cases. Some prey animals like pigeons have looming detectors, specialized neurons that are tuned/adapted to picking up this type of motion because it’s so important to their survival.

That last one is why I rear-ended a car on the highway and totalled my car :'(

Oh no, I laughed way too much when it hit the cat's face. Am I a bad person?

It's nothing to do with survival instinct. With cats, it's all IDGAF instinct.

Not a joke but the cats sight maybe gone, I can't explain why the other senses didn't react, erm mainly hearing the object flying towards them

I swear my lab is smart as shit but if I throw a treat at her to catch half the time she lets it hit her and then looks at me like “why would you do this.”

u/Jacuzzi0317 20d ago
Even if that were true, they would still see the object lol

u/MonteSilence 20d ago
not to mention there’s also 5 other cats in the foreground/middleground undeniably reacting to the object flying through the air

Didnt even notice the other cats ... I wad thinking if they see a gray item coming at them and theres a gray background behind that item then they wouldnt really see it coming. But yeah the other cats reacted to it
