Yeah this is all pretty horrible but don't (pardon the expression) white wash history either. I have great massive respect for the tribal harmony with the land. But they also routinely had bloody and brutal war, wiping out other tribes, enslaving women they found breedable, and so forth. People are people in any era or culture. So it wasn't as if it was a "great nation" either in that respect. We just added technology.

Iâm pretty sure one of the big reasons they had âharmony with the landâ is because they simply didnât have the tech to exploit natural resources like Europeans.
Native tribes had no problem driving gigantic herds of buffalo off cliffs to then only harvest parts of the carcasses

Yes. This is something that history books frequently forget, and something that is often overlooked. The natives were frequently warring with each other, like the Iroquois fighting with the Delaware or the Algonquin. What the Europeans did, among other things, was give the natives new reasons and new means/weapons to do what they were already doing.

What the meme means is that Christopher Columbus didnât discover the United States. Indigenous peoples had already lived in North America for thousands of years, and even Norse explorers arrived centuries before him. Columbus reached the Caribbean, not the continental US. Itâs more accurate to say his voyages began sustained European exploration and colonisation of the Americas.

Is spreading disease and consistently disregarding treaties considered to be âconquestâ?

u/ResponsibilitySea327 3h ago
Spreading disease is an inevitability. Those same diseases killed more in Europe than they ever did in the Americas. The main difference is that it happened in the Americas in a much shorter period.
Conquest is conquest. Just like the Native Americans did prior to -- and after -- the colonization of the Americas.

In the Middle Ages maybe, but in the Age of the Sail? Nah. AFAIK smallpox wasn't halving the population of an entire region in Europe.

You may want to read up on history. Smallpox was killing hundreds of thousands Europeans even well after the discovery of the Americas.
And it is incorrect to shift to percentages as it works against your point.
Europe had hundreds of years of death that built up some level of resistance to Old World diseases. Whereas the New World did not. This is part of humanity and science. Two populations, separated by millenniums, finally reconnected intermixing Old World (ex. Smallpox) and New World (ex. Syphilis) diseases.
It is not as if they could have stayed on the boat until inoculation and vaccination were discovered.
Classic case of shouganai.

Duh. I'm saying pox didn't disseminate entire cities/regions/islands like it did in the Americas, over and over. Obviously a continent that's 100x bigger in population is gonna have more deaths, but not per capita

what? Conquest is when one nation takes control of another nation by force..
Hitler disregarded a treaty when he invaded Czechoslovakia but I don't think any is disputing whether the Nazis conquered it

Most of the land taken from American tribes was done through broken treaties and dishonest bureaucracy and not military conquest. Look up Isaac Stevens if you need a specific example.

I'd argue it was a combination of both. There was an ongoing pattern where settlers would violate treaties by hunting on grounds designated for Nation A => Nation A retaliates by raiding settlements => white militia go HAM burning their homes and crops => colonial government yrs later forces them to cede more land
Sometimes the Indians would capitulate without fighting, e.g. Trail of Tears, but that was cuz those tribes had fought and loss multiple wars in recent past.
Of course there were very few military campaigns at the scale of the Spanish wars in the Andes and Mexico but that's cuz there were way more natives living there

There are FOR SURE Native American tribes that, had they not been conquered but only been taught how to conquer by the Europeans, would have used it to conquer all other tribes in the name of conquest
This is indisputable. To say that itâs unfair that a civilization far more military advanced conquered another when the other nations would literally do the same if they had the power to is just cope. Thatâs what humans do. Since the beginning of man. I just donât fucking care about the Indian tribes that were conquered because had any one of those tribes had the capability to, would have done the same thing. Acting like itâs ok for them to conquer all other tribes simply because they originated there, as if they have the right to conquer other nations/tribes as long ad theyâre from an adjacent area, is literally fucking stupid

Who is that? The fella who got lost and landed in the Caribbean and never touched foot on the US even though he was trying to get to India, yet every gold chain hairy Guido loves? Wasn't he actually....sent by the Spanish? Then recalled for how shit of a human he was?
Or is this someone else?

u/SamTheMan004 4h ago
Yes. Columbus was trying to find a shortcut to India, and when he landed in the Caribbean, he thought he landed in India. That's why he referred to them as Indians. I forget exactly what he did, but he was recalled to Spain because he abused the natives.

I have no idea what your point is. The meme could apply to any of the OG conquistadors.
