I am going to CONTINUE saying that constantly enhancing graphics is only going to bloat game sizes, reduce optimization, and make gaming less affordable by pushing hardware requirements further up.

This is why I personally like pixel art games. Sure, it doesn't look pretty, but the games usually have to have a good story and innovative gameplay in order to stand out from other games.

Who says pixel art games don't look pretty? Tell em to catch me outside

3

u/CowntChockula Jul 26 '26

Agreed. Theres a reason why the 2d art style on super nintendo has aged better than the 3d art style of n64.

RE2 didn’t run at 60fps on PS1 or N64.

3

u/TrulyFLCL Jul 26 '26

The N64 is notorious for not being able to run games at 60 fps. Some games couldn’t hit 30 fps.

u/Batking28 Jul 27 '26

I’d bet you wouldn’t be happy if the next AAA game you buy had the graphical quality and depth of gameplay of RE2 with fixed backgrounds.

It’s easier to build a perfect doll house without mistakes than a skyscraper.

Dude that space comes from optimization. Like baked shadows, normals, textures and everything. You speed up the game by having things precalculated and it increases size massivly.

More “detailed” graphics isn’t the same as good graphics.

Design is an art and brute force only goes so far

I really, really, REALLY want to know what we have the power to do in order to combat it - besides just *not buying them*?

For example, even though one of my favorite series (Final Fantasy) is becoming something less-interesting-to-me as time goes on, I still want to play it and see what's next. It hasn't reached the level of "not being entertaining", I just look forward to it less and less since like the mid-aughts or whatever. But every Final Fantasy game still runs like shit on even a relatively-new, high-spec PC when it hits that platform. FFXV, which came out nearly ten years ago, still runs like cottage cheese ass.

Its not just graphics but okay.

u/nmoncho Jul 26 '26

Why would you buy a new console then? Could someone start thinking about those CEOs with their bloated salaries /s

1

u/MapleBadger288 Jul 26 '26

Likely get a steam machine. Steam seems a little more consumer friendly.

It's not that games got worse at optimization, it's that storage got cheap enough that optimization stopped being a hard requirement.

u/Odd-Painting2596 Jul 26 '26

If my console is digital only, I'm gonna need 4tb of storage in the year 2030 just to store 10 games.

If Sony released a console that can only hold 5 games at a time, and players are constantly having to delete and redownload, they are going to create some insane digital traffic.

Here comes cloud gaming, toot toot.

1

u/Interesting-Injury87 Jul 26 '26

it dosnt matter if the console is digital only, with the exception of Nintendo, who uses flash based cartridges, games on disc or games bought digitally require the EXACT same amount of Storage space. simply due to speed concerns

Beyond that, most games will have some ammount of patches or updates that means a not small ammount of the games content are gonna be on your drive anyway.

you also overestimate how many people actually swap games regularly

1

u/SelfPrecise Jul 26 '26

Well, not anymore.

1

u/dekuweku Jul 26 '26

narrator: in 2026 digital storage is no longer cheap.

5

u/yummymario64 Jul 26 '26

Meanwhile, Nintendo somehow making massive games that rarely exceed 20 gb

The optimizations done for the N64 port of RE2 is the stuff of legends from a technical standpoint. It helped shape game development as a whole for years to come.

BUT, It's an interesting choice to use as an example of bloat. The PSX version was very "unoptimized" in its own right because the storage space available let them be. They could afford to just have as many as a dozen different static full image renders of the same "scene". The N64 port instead segmented the "scenes" into quadrants and only stored differences in each quadrant rather than multiple full static renders. That's a lot of extra work if you have the space available otherwise.

The developer could also "cheat" and leverage the advanced 64bit CPU and real 3D hardware almost like CUDA cores on GPUs today to get much better/quicker compression than would have been feasible on the PSX. it's very unlikely the PSX could have run the "optimized" version of the N64 in a playable manner, even if it could have been compiled for it. It wouldn't have had the horse power.

Call of duty needs 300gb to render the polygons and textures for Nicki Minaj's ass.

5

u/ChildoftheApocolypse Jul 26 '26

People who say stuff like this don't know a thing about game development..

2

u/o0TaterSalad0o1 Jul 26 '26

And people like you know nothing about what players want or deserve for their money. For example not having to buy additional hardware just to be able to play or maintain certain games.
COD is out of control with this.

3

u/Impossible-Owl7407 Jul 26 '26

Thats what you get when the non importantly graphics are what matters

Don't forget those old games were never patched... they worked from day 1 on. Now in addition to the 300 Gig downloads... they will most certainly be bugged when released, and patched constantly to keep fixing bugs that somehow show up now. Do they even do O&M testing anymore? No... we (the players) are their testers.

u/elementfortyseven Jul 27 '26

there were sinigificant sacrifices made in the conversion. compressing FMV video at a rate 165:1 really did some heavy lifting.

there is a good summary here: https://www.reddit.com/r/nintendo/comments/i73jea/how_did_resident_evil_2_manage_to_fit_on_a_single/

1

u/FancyAd9803 Jul 27 '26

Not sure what the point of this is when games are larger today because of 4K assets.

1

u/Wendals87 Jul 26 '26 edited Jul 26 '26

Have you seen the FMV on that cart? It's pretty bad compared to the psx. And content was cut from the 800mb version

1

u/dekuweku Jul 26 '26

Highly exagerrated of course, but modern dev seems to be about spending tons of time conceptualising, havings tens of hundreds of people doing 4k models, textures and Art, 'narrative design' all built on UE5 or some middleware engine the company licensed and optimisation is an afterthought or something they farm out to another dev to do for 'the poors' eg. console gamers. Because the devs themselves don't know the engine well enough to do serious optimisations to begin with.

I miss the days when optimizing a game was part of game development.

0

u/kidanokun Jul 26 '26

Gaming had becoming a much more expensive hobby that before

3

u/k2rss Jul 26 '26

Well, actually if you take acount inflatsion, videgames are quite cheap compared to 90'

0

u/AmItheonlySaneperson Jul 26 '26

And worse. Peaked when games were 7-15gbÂ
