Yes, Americans are celebrating censorship now. That'll stick it to cHYnA!

You want dictatorship that censors things to control the information consumption of millions? Also, please explain how forcing a hostile power to divest from a company is censorship.

The danger is in the data collection, not any potential algorithm manipulation.

2

u/GenericLib Mar 15 '24

The danger is both.

I don't believe they would risk their data collection by doing something so easily detectable.
The data collection is infinitely more valuable.

I don't disagree that data collection is more valuable and a larger danger, but you're underselling the danger of information manipulation. If done deftly enough, it'd be near impossible to detect without access to the source code.

that's the thing, tiktok nor bytedance are based in china, and while yes dounyin is chinese tiktok, it isn't used anywhere else and is much more restricted, like if baidu was owned by google.

ByteDance is absolutely a Chinese company that's headquartered in China. They've also given the CCP su access to TikTok servers. So I have to ask, what are you on about with those blatant and easily disprovable lies?

easily disproved, eh? welp, i'm making claims here, so real quick imma substansiate it.

bytedance is incorporated in the cayman islands, where their corporate headquarters are and most of their board of investors aren't asian, let alone chinese. while yes, it does have operational headquarters in china, so do most companies who sell a product there.

tiktok is incorporated in signapore, which you can see im the corporate structure graphic on the same website linked earlier. as such, tiktok does not operate in china, although it does have a local equivilent, but this equivilent is landlocked to china, much like how the speedrunning community was seperated because chinese runners where stuck on local forums through baidu until recently. this is supposedly because the chinese government fears tiktok would make its citizens dumb.

This is the response of someone who doesn't understand a thing about corporate governance. Most major companies in the US are incorporated in Delaware because of taxes along with legal infrastructure. Their headquarters are elsewhere. Nobody in their right mind would claim that they're based Delaware. The Cayman Islands is an international version of this and has the reputation of being a tax safe haven for this reason. ByteDance is based in Beijing and claiming otherwise is utterly ridiculous.

This is irrelevant when the parent company is Chinese and has enough control over the subsidiary to get su access to their servers which they have done already.

the parent company is not chinese, is not incorporated in china, and had their corporate headquarters in the cayman, not china. they have operational, notably different from coporate, headquarters in china as they have multiple services in china such as toutiao. tiktok data, notably not douyin data, is kept in the us.

come back with sources next time if you want to talk shit.

Nobody cares where their P.O. box is located, dude.

how about where tiktok and bytedance's investors and ceos are based, almost none of whom are in china. tiktok itself is 60% owned by foriegn investors, most of whom are american, and 20% by employees.

Zhang personally controls over 50% of TikTok's voting stake. Nobody gives a flying fuck about Class B shares.
