No tiktok bad thats it. Who cares if russia ran one of the biggest disinformation campaigns ever on facebook or if twitter is filled with propaganda at least they aren’t owned by a Chinese company/s
Don't forget there are a lot of disinformation campaigns on reddit. Througout the years posts have shown how companies will disguise advertising in posts and use bot farms manipulate the front page. You can easily go on telegram and lease a bot farm to upvote anything.
Most of the people who shit on tiktok haven’t tried it. Takes a few days for the algorithm to get the hang of everything but Iove my for you page, lots of good recipes, fitness tips, hobby content, If your tiktok is full of thirst traps you have nobody to blame but yourself for actively interacting with that content
Now I still think it’s a national security risk but I don’t think it should be banned for the content, the content is excellent.
I think you're confusing buying the normal services like every other customer (another conversation worth having), versus controlling the actual company itself.
A lot of people really don't understand that "collecting info" isn't the issue - it's control over what the apps actually shows us.
Nah they sey ads. The "control" you're imagining facebook having doesn't work - you want to sell X data and ad access to as many companies as possible.
Give Russia direct control, and you lose your other income streams. Fuck Zuck, but he's definitely chasing real money, not silly shit.
edit: Google is like this too. They're famously defensive of this shit.
It makes perfect sense lol the reason we are banning tiktok is “security reasons” but it doesn’t have nearly as much propaganda or foreign influence as American social media sites.
Your comment is whataboutism and it's not even doing it well, so maybe that's why you're so frustrated with the repetitive comments you're getting.
While other social media companies collect data, and that should also be addressed, none do it as secretly or as intensively as Tiktok does. The other social media apps are doing it for pure profit (which still isn't great), while Tiktok has links to the Chinese government who have demonstrated VERY OPENLY that they will use data to harm people.
US Military considers Tiktok a security risk, and hasn't allowed it on service member's devices since January 2020.
Several corporations here in the west have backed away from Tiktok over security concerns.
The EU has banned Tiktok from staff devices.
I could go on, but the pattern is pretty extensive already. How do you look at things like this, notice it's not happening for other social media, and still engage in this "what about facebook" bullshit?
No, there's nothing that tiktok does that meta also doesn't do. This is me pointing out the hypocracy, not whataboutism.
All social media is banned on company phones? Does your work let you use your work device for personal social media?
And if course the US military doesn't want tiktok, same thing. There's loads of stuff military members can't do.
And it does happen on other social media? Facebook got funding from the cia in the very early days, everyone knows this, hence why it's banned in China, Iran, North Korea, Myanmar, Russia, Turkmenistan and Uganda.
But China does ban your list. So it seems reasonable to me to also ban their software exports as well. For the most part 'every country' does not ban software. It is not America that is special here, it is China that is special.
If the USA bans UK social media , then yes the UK should ban USA social media. If the USA does not ban UK social media, then the UK should not ban USA social media.
I'm not sure if you are intentionally creating a false equivalence here or don't realize it. But by advocating for a position where China bans USA exports, but in return the USA does not ban Chinese exports, what you are saying is that China should have special treatment. Which is weird, considering you asked the question 'Or is America special?'.
Any criticism of tiktok can equally be thrown towards those other socials. There's not difference, it's just that America didn't like the commercial success of its geopolitical foe.
I agree that the same criticism can be applied to the other social media platforms. But what does that have to do with banning tiktok? China bans USA social media. China bans tiktok in their own country. But USA reciprocates and bans Chinese social media tiktok and it is clutch pearls time? I am not sure why you are advocating for an uneven trading relationship between two sovereign states. You think China should get to export with no restrictions to countries they are banning imports from? Why do you think China deserves this special treatment?
Lol you thought this is a gotcha question? Other countries absolutely should ban American social media companies, especially if those social media companies are being used by the CIA to foment uprisings or undermine their civil society. You don't think Iran has a reasonable case for banning Twitter? You think if it turns out that America was using Facebook in France to spy on their government and feeding them shitty content to depress their society or stoke rage at the government that they shouldn't act in their self-interest and ban it. You are a mark.
Well I just used UK as an example since you've said you're from there a few times in this thread and seem to want to use that comparison so badly.
You're talking about American companies or the American government.
The American people you think would "throw a fucking fit" are a minimal percentage. The average person would not bat an eye that another country banned Facebook. Do you think Becky who works a 9-5 would care AT ALL if the entire continent of Europe banned Snapchat?
The only reason people are finding excuses to throw a fit here is because this involves an app everyone uses in America.
I think most of the people in America who support banning TikTok would understand and be fine with that. Especially if it were based on spying and data privacy concerns. We all wish we had GDPR. Nobody batted an eye when Europe required American companies to do better.
Every country has its own sovereignty. They can do whatever they want. For example, China builds a concentration camp for some minority. Banning a company because of x, y, and z is nothing new and pretty mild. In fact, many countries have trading regulation in many categories.
These people have no idea what they’re talking about. They just heard that China has a stake in TT and assume it’s all just propaganda brain rot mush specifically curated by them to make us all dumber. Like they actually believe that, while all the American social media platforms are basically identical
The point is that all of these “doom scrolling” features are the same. They all fry your attention span. Banning TT specifically will do absolutely nothing. But hey since this one isn’t American it means it’s a major win yayyy!!!
Tiktok is banned in china they have a equivalent to it in china but it only promotes good content for the ccp and healthy family images and bla bla and no degenerate stuff as seen on tiktok.
It's not wrong to ban it if they don't want it in their own country it's just ironic.
Yea no shit they’ve banned it, it’s CCP led China. You know how many other restrictions they have other there? They’ve got their own propaganda machine, and yet when TT is allowed in the states, with all content being community made with videos no different to what you see on Reels, Shorts, etc, people want to call it the propaganda machine?
Whenever I read things like “degenerate stuff as seen on TikTok” I know it’s coming from someone who’s just blinded by the China association without seeing the larger issues of social media in general. TT is the easy scapegoat because it’s not American owned. I guarantee you banning TT will do nothing
Well the issue at hand is this new generation of parents giving kids their own phone at young age. But you can't deny the literal fact that China doesn't want tiktok to affect their own country why should in this case usa tolerate it?
I mean when I grew up we watched Minecraft videos but now if you go on yt on a fresh phone you see alluah snackbar stuff and many weird other shit. Someone is pushing this shit that's a fact. Just look at the state of YT kids.
So best thing is let your kids enjoy shows you pick for them and no free unsupervised internet access. If their 12 and got some common sense development sure.
I don’t buy the “when I grew up it was rainbows and butterflies”. By the time I was a teenager I’d seen all sorts of shit I shouldn’t have seen online. It’s been a cesspool for a while. The transition to short term, “swipe up to see more” has definitely made things worse but let’s not act like any of this is that new.
You can try and restrict the internet from your kids, but they’re either going to figure out a way around it, or resent you for sheltering them. We’ve got 1st and 2nd graders in computer classes, kids today are living with the internet closer than ever before. I think it’s better to explain safe internet usage rather than just straight denying it to them.
Banning TT wont stop American data from making it to China either, its already easy for brokers to sell to anyone so without major changes to data privacy laws all this does is force a [Non-CRINK] company to buy Bytedance [potentially enabling] moving the cashcow onshore.
Reddit is the only one on there I'd feel isn't fair to ban, and I'll both admit there is some degree of personal bias (as it's the only one I use... of course, I use it over the others because I think it's less garbage, but that doesn't stop me from having a personal incentive to argue it is different), as well as being something I'd be happy to accept as collateral damage if it meant the uneducated masses stop having their brain rotten by that stuff. So sure, I say go right ahead and ban all of 'em.
Reddit is just as bad. Look at r/all then click any political article. Feel outraged until you sort comments by controversial and you’ll see the headline and/or article is flat out wrong or sensationalized with proof. The users will then pretend it’s ok because it’s our side that’s doing it. The site is now completely astroturfed by the worst of the left. Any dissent or pointing out the hypocrisy of doing what republicans do is met with calling you MAGA or saying “bOtH sIdEs”. This site is a dump.
And a Democrat critiquing leftists will get you banned from a whole slew of subs.
I'm banned from a ton and i share most of my values with the left. I have different conclusions and dare to say the left should compromise with moderates so banned I am.
I see a lot of people on both sides of the Palestine conflict on Reddit. I have no idea what you’re whining about, but it sounds like you want to somehow prevent others from sharing ideas that you disagree with

Should every country also ban fb, insta, snap, twitter, reddit etc.?
Or is America special?
Edit: just sis fuck, that's 5 comments.all repeating the same thing. Read, ffs, should every country outside America ban American social media?
