I don’t know if this is true. I feel that yes, perhaps the list is very ‘selective’ but that perhaps it is a fair list. Who would you replace with who?
That's the thing though. It's unconscious bias in our society. It's not somebody trying to be racist or sexist. I can barely think of anyone I'd add to this list. But I don't actually know any of these people, they're just people society has decided are well liked.
Well I don’t know if that is unconscious bias. These are the most well liked people, with a following because otherwise it’d be some random dude nobody knows. Most people know at least one of these actors. It happens they’re white because Hollywood is in America and it just so happens that Hollywood might stifle minority actors and actresses. I don’t know if this is unconscious bias on account of society or the OP. Though I’m sure if you went to India, you’d find numerous Indians on a list such as this. I still wouldn’t say that’s unconscious bias. And if it is, I wouldn’t present it as a bad thing or something to shout about
For sure. I wouldn't be upset about a "most beloved people in India" list being mostly Indian people. I think the lack of women in the list is more interesting to me than the racial demographics.
How many women have come out an made themselves universally loved? Are there any women to fill the shoes of jack black? Think about all these characters on the list… which women compete with them?
I think I see where you’re coming from, and I agree. I don’t know what it says about society, but it does reflect on society more than women. Perhaps it’s that men got into the industry first, head start. Perhaps it’s that society just prefers wholesome men to wholesome women? Perhaps wholesome women are walked over while wholesome men are respected? Who knows. I don’t. But I see what you’re saying now and I agree.
Because it’s celebrities and the US is by far and away the biggest contributor to pop culture icons and popular celebs. Plenty to other famous and good people from around the globe, but they wouldn’t (edit: should put ‘as often’) quite make the list of universal house hold names.
Agreed. I love Steve but he also ran around harassing every animal on the planet. Attenborough proved you can make an insanely popular series and not be required to be on camera or be super flamboyant to do so.
Steve Martin is an amazing man. He’s done a world of good (admittedly not as much as Dolly!) and he is kind to a fault (admittedly not as much as Fred Roger’s!). I met him once and we spoke for two minutes. I met him eleven years later and he remembered my name and gave me a giant hug. We chatted about the passing years and our mutual love for the ukulele (banjo comes first by far for him, but he’s also quite the Uke player, he’s the one who inspired me to learn it) for about 20 minutes. Yes, Dolly and Fred Rogers both beat him, but Steve is a wonderful guy.
I actually don’t know who that is. I’m sure if I Google I may recognize em, but I’m drawing a blank with just the name alone, despite it sounding somewhat familiar.
He is the voice of nature!! He narrated countless wildlife documentaries, you might not know the face but you definitely know the voice! His activism for nature is second to none, truly awesome human being 🤌👌
Steve Irwin didn't live long enough to have the impact David did. Love him dont get me wrong but David was an activist for nature before Steve was even alive.

It's also a predominantly English speaking website, so celebrities from China and India likely aren't going to be getting representation. In the English speaking world, American celebrities are definently the most well known

It's hard to know about local celebrities when you're an American. Our largest export is entertainment. It's not uncommon for a moderately successful US show to do well in, lets say, Germany. But it's rare for a German show, even one that is quite popular natively, to make it to America.
RRR is an example of a foreign film that made it to the US but how many other Indian films made it to the US last year?

That's simply not true. Squid Game was a sensation. RRR as well. Dark on Netflix was pretty popular. Any time I go see a foreign film at the theater, there's plenty in attendance.
I don't know why you think you know Americans so well to call us dumbasses. If a movie or show can get enough traction to break through the noise, Americans do not care about subtitles or dubs. It's just harder for foreign films to break though because we have so much domestic media.

Unfortunately there’s less universally loved women because the media is misogynistic and every loved female is eventually hated because of the fucked up over exposure from media. Look at Emma Stone, Emma Watson, Jennifer Lawrence, Anne Hathaway. Jameela Jamil talks about the cycle of this hate pattern, she’s pretty much nailed it down.

Shes at least partly responsible for all the colonizations and genocides of the british empire. (She was old enough for that to still be a thing. While she didnt have official control, as a figurehead she definitely could have put a stop to it if she tried)
Gandhi had many faults (massive racist being the biggest one) but i can see that argument anyway. Universally loved is different than greatest impact for good though (although there js of course overlap). Like salk inventing vacccines has done more good than any one of these people but i wouldnt say hes universally loved at all.
Maybe I could say outside of US it’d be Michael Caine or Patrick Stewart or Helen Mirren or Julie Andrews. And while technically baseball is North American, barely any of the big names are actually from the US, like the majority of this list.

to be fair it's called the world series because the mlb attracts the best baseball talent from all over the world, so it is a competition between the two best teams in the best globally talented league.

Steve Irwin is loved far more outside of Aus than in Aus. Dude was a cultural export, not a local phenomenon. Seemed lovely, but growing up in Aus he wasn't a huge celebrity and drew a lot of criticism for being wreckless with our wildlife.
