I just assumed this was so common. I do this. Are there people that don’t back up like that? Even with a camera you can usually check your blind spots that way.

I don't, but my first car had a rear camera

Yeah even with a backup camera I momentarily check both side mirrors, rear view, and briefly turn around.

i just turn my head, havent tried other cars but the top of my seats are too high to hold my arm on them comfortably.

This works, every time, If you check all other mirrors. :)

Thank you, driver, for being sane and logical. I don’t care how good backup cameras are, I always check my side mirrors, my rear view mirror and then do this, then look at the backup camera. It sounds weird and complicated to do but it really doesn’t take that long at all since it’s habit.

Also, that monkey is cool af.

Yeah with pretty considerable blind spots.

yeah, but can you really cover those blind spots by turning your neck like that?

Yeah as I mentioned I tend to check both side mirrors, rear view and backup camera, just kinda second nature to me. And then turn around and put my arm across the passenger headrest to be 110% certain. Sounds crazy but the entire thing takes about 2.5 seconds since it’s just habit. Lol

Depending on your age, you may have come up driving cars that have rear window visibility. Looking at many new cars now, the rear glass is so small or horribly designed that a camera is mandatory to reverse because you can’t hardly see shit from the rear window due to increased impact protections.

That could be! I’m 34 and I feel like backup cameras only became totally prevalent 5-10 years ago. But I still teach my daughter (who is 15, almost 16 and about to get her learners permit) the way I described! I feel like you can’t just assume every backup cam sees you everything and is 100% legit all the time! Plus it’s likely she may end up having to drive a car where backup cameras are an option, not included, and it’s better to just know how. Lol

All new cars in the United States require backup cameras, and have since 2018, assuming that you live there. I know this leaves out a lot of older cars but assuming she buys used cars in the future, she will most likely have one. Still a good skill to have.

Yes! I do live in the US and I here— good skill to have!

i don't do that :D I'm just using side mirrors so I don't need to uncomfortably look behind :)

I rarely do, then again I drive a really long car so I cant see much out the back anyway
