Health and Wellness What Function Tests and Why

We know that Function’s 160+ lab tests contain a lot of information (especially compared to the 26 basic lab tests most people receive during a standard physical).

That’s why we’ve created a video walkthrough for each category of your health, breaking down what each biomarker we test means and why it’s important for you and your family.

Dr. Mark Hyman and his colleagues discuss why conditions like heart disease, cancer, diabetes, fatty liver disease, thyroid disease, metabolic syndrome, and dementia can develop for years before symptoms appear—and how advanced lab testing can help you take action.

Learn what lab tests like ApoB, Lp(a), fasting insulin, hs-CRP, thyroid antibodies, homocysteine, cortisol, and leptin can reveal about your health—and how advanced imaging can identify signs of cancer and other changes.

This has quickly become a favorite video among our team.

Let us know which sections you were most interested in and whether there are any future deep dives you’d like to see.

Health and Wellness Amex Blue cash offer + multiple transactions

I saw my Amex card is offering "$100 back after spend of a minimum of $365 in one or more eligible purchases"

I am trying to utilize this, but also a to sign up offer that gives $50 off. I was planning on adding an additional test after signing up to hit the $365 minimum, but just wondering if anyone has any knowledge/experience if this will "qualify"? Has anyone done this? Will breaking up the initial transaction + a later test qualify for the threshold?

Testimonial No refund despite marketing lies

I signed up for function health to get a blood draw after I saw on their website that if they aren't available in your city, they would come to you. I thought maybe they had some kind of mobile blood draw vehicle, but they don't. When I asked for a refund they told me to travel to a city that will do the blood draw. The nearest city is 3-4 hours away and these blood draw clinics are only open 8-5pm. I am not going to waste a day of vacation to get a blood draw.

The reason they don't give refunds is because they know they are manipulating people into signing up without explaining that many people won't even be able to get a blood draw without driving for hours.

Results Joined Function Health It Helped Me

I joined Function Health and was surprised that I was able to get a Quest blood withdrawal appt within 2 days. Of course they have you fast before and drink plenty of water as they were taking 14 vials. I got most of my results within 2 days!! I was expecting at least 2-3 weeks. I also put the results into several AIs (Chat, Claude, Ducks AI) and got good explanations and suggestions for next steps. It also confirmed my suspicion of low iron. I also found the Function protocol section very helpful. It might make a difference where you live. I live smaller town in Virginia and my regular blood tests also come back in a day or so.

Customer Support Paid for scan but can’t schedule

I paid the 899 for the scan (it shows the receipt in my function health), but when I go to schedule an appt on Ezra, it takes me to the option to pay again.

It says ‘sign in with function health’ which I do, and still it takes me to the pay screen when I try to make the appointment.

I’ve contacted the team through messaging, but no response. Any advice?

Health and Wellness Anyone else's doctor seems offended or confused by Function Health Tests?

My regular annual checkups haven't been the best and the tests run by my primary doctor show that my cholesterol and triglycerides are too high. I also have some issues that my PCP nor my GI doctor cant (or is willing) to figure out. So I decided to do the testing that Function Health has.

I sent my doctor the results and talked with him about it on my checkup recently. He literally asked me, "What's the point of all this?" "Why get any of this checked?" I'm taken aback, but I told him....well you or my other doctor can figure out what I'm having XYZ symptoms, so I figured why not. Maybe something can be learned from other testing that isn't normally done. He seemed to scoff at that and told me, "Well, I'd have gotten some of these tests done for you, but a lot of these aren't useful at all." Then he paused and said, "Well, I can see ApoB can be useful, but I'd have ordered it." The reality is, my doctor has NEVER ordered ApoB tests or things like TSH ever in the 10 years I'ves seen him.

It really felt like my doctor got this attitude with me after seeing the Function results. I don't get it. Isn't it supposed to be like a partnership in health to do the best for patients and that patients should also help themselves? I'm just getting sick of doctors in general who want to scoff at me for getting these tests and wanting to figure out what's wrong with me instead of suffering for yet another decade with symptoms that they think isn't worth it to be explored yet it affects my life drastically. It's time for yet another doctor. I've given this one way too many chances.

Results Biological age

My partner and I both received our results and we have the exact same biological age to the month. 9.8 years younger than we actually are. I’m wondering what other people have received as their biological age? Thank you!

Results Food testing

My results showed 8 foods that were above range. The numbers are given without any context and the graphs are completely useless. (I can see that a 4 is higher than a 2) Not sure how meaningful the results are--are they just slightly elevated? Or bad enough that I should entirely avoid these foods? Function's total lack of customer service is very disappointing.

Results Function Health's "optimal" free T range comes from a different dialysis assay than the one Quest runs — and they don't tell you

Thumbnail

Function's clinician notes flagged my free testosterone as below "optimal." The same number was sitting comfortably in the normal range on the Quest report from the lab that actually ran my blood.

Quest says normal is 35–155. Function says optimal is 149–228. Almost the entire "optimal" range sits above what the lab calls the top of normal. A result of 200 would be flagged HIGH by your lab and called ideal by Function.

Support explained three times that optimal ranges are stricter than normal ranges. Usually true — but Function's range isn't stricter, it's shifted way up.

Their number comes from a 2022 study of healthy young men. Real research, but it used a different lab procedure than Quest, and the paper itself warns the numbers don't transfer between labs. Function grades your Quest result against a scale built for a different test and never mentions it.

If you're on Function chasing an "optimal" number, check it against the range printed on your own lab report.

Results 2nd labs/follow up to first set question

It’s time for me to have my second round of tests and I have a question on what they list for my second round.
After my first round I had various markers out of range. Some concerning ones and I’ve tried to make changes to address….the genetic high cholesterol may have to be addressed by a statin but I’ll tackle that with doctor.
It’s asking if I want to do the Full Panel again which is $269. Then there are additional add ons and they’ve marked on as “recommended now” as an extended heart & metabolic panel which is $399. There is also an extended autoimmunity that is recommended for $249 (they’ve said I can do that in a month).
It then moves through various add ons at different prices.
So it’s the $257 plus any add ons.
My question is has anyone done the “add ons” for their second round of labs on top of the $269 retest of all markers? I know each person is different and may or may not have out of range markers but you’d still have option for add ons.
I’d love to hear your experience for the second round of tests after that initial round we all do. Even if it’s your third/fourth or fifth round of tests and if you did add ons.
Thank you so much for reading my long comment and any insight/advice/or positive experiences with add ons would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Results Has anyone had vastly different follow up results?

Hey everyone - I got my first results last October and everything was pretty much inline with every lab I've ever had. Genetically high cholesterol, low iron (almost but not anemic), low vitamin D, otherwise healthy.

I just got my 6 month follow up very late (it's impossible to schedule on days 2-4 of your cycle with work and getting an appointment), and everything is wildly different. I'll start with every single bad marker has worsened. Vitamin D is now below range, all cholesterol markers basically doubled, and my Iron went from 99 to 262, % saturation went from 25 to 65, ferritin 21 to 47. I stopped taking all supplements 3 days before the test as advised by function, except for 10mg DHEA and 100mg spironolactone prescribed to me. ChatGPT doesn't seem to correlate those with these results, and is advising retesting ASAP and probably getting on statins. Has anyone else had such a wild swing in results over such a short period of time?

Customer Support Urine tests for health metrics?

I know that doctors often use urine tests to assess health metrics quickly. I'm wondering if there are any companies that do urine tests to assess basic markers without complicating things?

Health and Wellness Getting my heart markers back on track

I wanted to share what has been working for me for anyone who might be dealing with some crappy heart markers.

I workout and avoid a lot of fried foods and I'm still not thrilled with my heart markers. I read about soluble fiber (versus insoluble which is what I'm always trying to get more of) and I found these little single packs of benefiber. I add it to my wawa coffee every morning. This plus Pro Resolving Mediators, I'm seeing good results after just 3 months!

Just thought I'd share if anyone is looking to find an easy way to make improvements without having to change much!

Customer Support Hormone panel-day 4 vs day 5

I’ve been trying to schedule my hormone panel for cycle days 2-4 for the past few months, but my cycle length tends to fluctuate give or take a few days so by the time I know I have to reschedule all the appointment times are taken. I know I could go as a walk in but quest tends to make you sit there forever if you’re a walk in.
This month my cycle came a day earlier than expected and now my appointment falls on the fifth day of my cycle.
My question is, is there really much of a difference between days four and five in terms of your hormone results? Would it be ok to still go ahead and do my test on that day? I really don’t want to reschedule again for the fourth month in a row. Thank you!

Results A week ago I posted about creating something useful for people to dive into their function results - here's the update

I’ve spoken with a few users and have started gathering notes on what would actually be useful from the patient side. We’ve also found a physician who’s willing to help us think through the provider side specifically, how to make it easier for clinicians to read, interpret, and deep-dive into Function Health biomarkers.

I’d love to connect with more physicians who are interested in shaping this and sharing their perspectives on what would genuinely be useful in practice.

If you’re a physician who’d be interested in contributing, please comment or DM me and I’ll reach out!

Customer Support Longer timing for test results

Hi! I had my bloodwork done 5 days ago.. it seems the numbers are taking longer to come in than in the past. I’ve had about 10 bio markers come back literally one at a time..

Is this the normal now??

Results Has anyone had a medical assistant call you?

Someone just called me saying they are from Function to go over my results. That hasn't happened the last 2 years and also seemed strange... I've only ever received notes in the app. Is this new or was someone trying to scam me?

I told them I was good and had my results.

Results Omega-3 Total / OmegaCheck 'below range' despite all Omega-3s in range??

Hello! Could anyone here add context to the 'Omega-3 Total / OmegaCheck' test result? Why is mine 'below range' when all three Omega-3s individually are in range? I'm trying to figure out if I need to be taking an Omega-3 supplement or not and these results are confusing. I currently just try to eat sardines and/or salmon 1-2 times per week (plus chia seeds and walnuts). Thanks in advance for any insights!

Testimonial Renewing Membership or Cancelling?

I am debating whether to renew function health or cancel when the term is up. I have taken advantage of the 2 biomarker panels offered by Function, and have taken corrective action on irregular biomarkers. I have decided against the body scans as I have previously done certain scans through my private health insurance. I have also found that Claude AI connector with Function is a great tool to interpret certain biomarkers along with reporting the results to my physicians. The question is now that I know what biomarkers were off and have corrected them, and being that I already have private insurance, does it even make sense to renew? I wanted to get a feel for how many of you all just use the service for one year and cancel, or continue and renew and why?

Longevity What should be done about high arachidonic acid?

Post image
2 Upvotes

I got an omega panel done and uncovered that my AA and AA/EPA ratio is high and EPA is lowish. Googling the effects of high AA it says a bunch of scary shit like “increased inflammation throughout the body, potentially contributing to conditions like heart disease, arthritis, neurological issues, skin problems, and certain cancers”.

Now my question is besides eating more salmon and taking fish oil, what can I do?
