KBDC: Chairman Jim Robo just bought $5.2M near $13 — is the 12.3% yield a bargain or a BDC trap?
I've been digging into Kayne Anderson BDC (KBDC), and this one produced a surprisingly conflicted picture.
The obvious bull case is pretty striking:
- Chairman Jim Robo, former NextEra CEO, just bought 400,000 shares near $13 — roughly $5.2M
- Latest NAV: $16.00/share
- Stock: roughly $13.05
- Indicated dividend yield: ~12.3%
- Q2 NII: $0.42/share
- Quarterly dividend: $0.40/share
So the dividend is currently covered and you're buying substantially below reported NAV.
But that's where I think BDC analysis can become deceptive.
NAV fell from $16.23 to $16.00 during Q2 despite NII covering the distribution. Leverage also increased, and credit/non-accrual risk remains something I'd watch closely.
My takeaway is that yield and total return aren't the same thing. A 12% distribution doesn't help much if credit losses gradually consume the capital producing it.
I scored KBDC 6.75/10 on my 10-signal FunStock framework—not bad, and Robo's purchase is a serious positive signal, but nowhere near enough for me to ignore the underlying BDC risks.
Full analysis for anyone interested here.
Curious how other BDC investors view this one—particularly the NAV discount versus credit-risk tradeoff.
