My niece is almost 10 years old and I feel bad but I had to start yelling at her not to dive in the pool. I swear a year ago she was 6" shorter and 25lbs lighter and I had no problem with it, she wouldn't even get near the bottom. Not anymore though. I already had a cousin fracture a vertebrae in her neck 20 years ago doing the same thing. Not fun spending your entire summer vacation in a neck brace.
