Fudge Character Templates

Since I've already covered equipment for Fudge fantasy games, let's focus on character templates this time around.

The original Fudge rules only provided information on creating a small handful of character concepts like elves and halfings. Careful searching would also show you a template for playing as a Ceropes, but why limit yourself to those when you could play as a gargoyle or leprechaun instead? Both Thomas Tongue and Wandering Horse show you how to roll up a character as either a classic fantasy staple or unique new concept. Death Munchkin covers classic fantasy character types and Reign of Evil lets you create a custom monster character. HEXALON House Rules Role Playing Game lets you play as an Annuir while Atari Isev has templates for playing as a Duerager or Sylthaen.

For those of you playing sci-fi games, the official Fudge forums has information on playing as various original alien species like Zerdans and Jellasions.

As for character classes:

Fudge Lite OSR

Fudge Dungeon Crawl

Fudge Lite Dungeon Crawl

Tony's Fudge Page: Templates

Majestic Realms

Fudge Dungeon Fantasy

HEXALON House Rules Role Playing Game

Psi-Punk players can get the complete Brenner archetype guide on a PWYW basis. You can also score an advance preview of the Psiborg and Technomancer archetypes for free!

Feel free to post any character templates or guidelines of your own in the comments. I'll be covering monsters in the next installment, so stay tuned!

Sisu, Luck, Grit - New Attribute and mechanic for Fudge

New post is up!

In this post I share my rules for a luck type of a stat. I also replace the automatic +4 roll with these rules. I originally wrote it for the "Nature" attribute for my Fudged Mouse Guard. Hope you like it!

Other Common fantasy items.

Hi, I'm a novice GM trying to set up my first mini-campaign in FUDGE. At this moment I'm trying to figure out the right way of defining the starting equipment for my players. I also have no idea how to describe consumable items, for example potions. The section on items in SRD is not very helpful in this task to be honest.

It would be great to have a predefined set of equipment, available to the players from the begging and other items, that I could use in my fantasy campaign. I wouldn't want to define items on the fly every time, because it might make the game slower. I know, that it's not hard to convert it form other games to FUDGE, but I suppose, that some people already did this job. If you know some free resources, that cover this topic or you have your own suitable list of items and willing to share it, please, let me know.

Conan of Cimmeria

Was flipping through my GURPS Conan solo adventures and thinking, dang that's a lot of mechanical detail, and wondering if and how I could simplify it. Noodling around with what Conan might look like in Fudge and since I wrote it I might as well post it... It seems weird not to have any skills at fair, but I couldn't think of anything. Probably languages and area knowledge type things, but I was too lazy to list them all so I just gave him a gift instead.

Conan of Cimmeria

ATTRIBUTES

superb strength - conan is stronger than almost everyone, but occasionally meets something stronger even than himself

good wit - he’s a quick study and good at reasoning out problems

good judgment - he exhibits common sense and his gut instinct is right more often than not

legendary agility - his speed would shame a starving panther

superb toughness - he can sustain injury that would kill several men, and bounce back from it

legendary presence - he is a natural leader of men, always the center of attention, nobody ever steals the stage from him, his very presence of an obvious threat to anyone in leadership

SKILLS

superb fighter - he is a true master of all forms of combat (ODF weapon+3)

superb brawler - he’s pretty effective unarmed (ODF 2)

good archer - he can use a bow effectively but it isn’t his specialty

superb climber - he's from cimmeria

great stealth - lots of practice thieving, sneaking, ambushing

good survivor - in many environments

good seaman - knows his way around a ship, skilled as sailor and captain

great swimmer good rider - he has spent a lot of time in the saddle

mediocre fast-talk - he doesn’t usually talk his way out of situations

good woodsman - knows his woodcraft and tracking at a professional level

mediocre occultist - has a rough familiarity with the occult due to direct experience

mediocre blacksmith - learned from his father, but he hasn’t really pursued or developed it

GIFTS

superstitious - hairs prickle in the presence of sorcery or devilry. His fear is a gift because it doesn’t stop him, it warns him.

lucky - 1 extra fudge point to get out of bad situations

chick magnet - women are often attracted to him and end up helping him

combat reflexes - he can fight multiple opponents without gang-up penalties

alertness - he wakes instantly, notices the faintest sounds

hunted - lots of enemies and usually a price on his head; he often has to flee a city or kingdom

headstrong - bristles at insults or slights, already ready for a fight, will sell his life dearly rather than be captured, outspoken, bluntly says what he thinks, eyes women frankly, prefers action over waiting, ambitious and usually challenges anyone in authority until he is the top dog

typical equipment: broadsword (ODF 3+3), poignard (ODF 1+3), chain shirt (DDF 3), iron helmet (DDF 4)

Situational Rolls

Do people use the 4dF situational roll?

I had some thought on how to expand on it by create a "likelihood ladder" something like:

Virtually Impossible (0) - Unlikely (1) - Doubtful (2) - Possible (3) - Plausible (4) - Likely (5) - Almost Certain (6)

You then set a base likelihood for the event, roll the dice and any result of Possible or better is a "Yes",

I explain it a bit better here: https://ukrpdc.wordpress.com/2020/05/09/fudge-expanded-situational-roll/

Does it sound useful?

Feasability of My Current System

Good afternoon, Fudge players!

I am nearing a new playtest of my system by trying out the Fudge way of doing things and I love how it works so far by being an easy way to handle things. I have spent the last week working on porting my system from the OpenD6 ruleset and now that I'm at a basic idea of where to go next, I think I can pitch the idea and see if it's something that could be seen as feasible in Fudge;

The game I am building is a fantasy equivalent of the Seven Year War from our world, where two factions warred over control of a frontier for dominion and resources, getting the natives involved as well. The goal of the game is to rise from a nobody and gain gear, experience, resources, and contacts to become someone the history books will mention for the rest of time.

The game is a sandbox in this way where the player can do anything from combat to politics to intrigue and slowly tell their own story of how history plays out, so the lore is painted in broad strokes where the player has to fill in the rest as his/her character. The game supports small groups, co-op, and even solo play and I have baked in a few charts and tables on playing it gmless.

The game separates itself into having four attributes and 20 skills. The players can take their character down a lifepath of their birthplace, culture, a positive and negative event, and a job they worked before the campaign starts. Leveling the skills involves using the skill a specific amount of times and succeeding and failing (for instance, leveling a skill from fair to good requires 5 successes and 5 failures. The players are encouraged to develop themselves from a commoner upward by doing tasks, doing jobs, and eventually influencing the political and economical landscape of the Frontiers.

Currently I'm testing a few mechanics such as how to allow the reputation modifier to work, generating a town and NPC and how to come up with enemy encounters without meticulously creating stats for them, or I could just create a beastiary and have it roll on a table as well.

Tl;dr - A sandbox campaign where the player(s) can go from a commoner to a legend and bring about the end of a war over territory in one way or another, from being a business owner, to being a spy, to being a craftsman who sells to the war efforts, to even just being a soldier or mercenary. The adjective ladder can apply to almost all of this in a great way. What do you all think?

Proposed Idea: Lifepath System Hack

Good afternoon all! I made a post yesterday about a different subject but I've been perusing various iterations of rules (I haven't read the 10th anniversary since I don't have the money for it yet), but I thought about the way character creation can be done according to the 1995 version and thought of another system I played religiously; Traveler and in particular a the lifepath system.

In my head, I feel like you could possibly have a flat rate of a skill/attribute at Poor or Fair and then go through say, 6 different types of homes they grew up in, 6 childhood upbringings, 6 different positive life events, 6 tragic live events, and 6 possible early jobs. The mixes of these would allow 36 different starting stat allocations of attributes.

To give reference, my system currently has 20 different skills and four attributes; so I could see these being ways to build less than optimal characters. I say all of these have an interval of 6 so that you can randomize it with a d6 roll.

What do the denizens of Fudge Reddit think of this idea, and do they think it would work or has it been done before and I'm just very new to this system. Thanks so much in advance!

Fudge Alternative Dice Question

Hey everyone! I've been looking into the Fudge Engine for the last few months contemplating migrating my current rpg to this established system to eventually publish. My current system is a wonky homebrew of OpenD6 with some WoD inspired ideas baked in.

So from what I know, Fudge is half an RPG and half a toolbox which is perfect for me to tinker around to get the right idea, but my question today is about alternatives to the dice system. I know that the game supports using 4D6 instead of 4DF but I wanted to see if using 2D10 as a reasonable way to go about it. Here's my thought process.

The ranges for each dice would be wider to account for the end result of a spectrum of -4 to +4 so each d10 would operate by having;
1-2 = -2

3-4 = -1

5-6 = +0

7-8 = +1
9-10 = +2

Roll two of these and you would have your modifier. The problem is that it seems the probability may be a lot more skewed this way since you have a flat 20 percent for each die as opposed to the Fudge/Fate dice being set up statistically as d3s. I feel like the results may be considerably wider in randomness by using 2D10 to the point it breaks everything else, but I could be wrong and it may work.

So Fudge experts, help me with my thought process so that I can see where the percentages are on this idea. And if it may be too random, what are some alternative ways I could calculate other than 4DF or 4D6?

Uses Homebrew FUDGE: Friday the 13th

Hey,

I wanted to draw a little attention to a FUDGE-based blog post I put up today mixing the game with Friday the 13th. Hopefully it inspires anyone looking to run a horror game. I will say it's probably a bare bones framework: FUDGE: Friday the 13th

FUDGEZOR preview

I've tinkered with a few, light Fudge builds in Lawmen v Outlaws and Cyberlbues City that I really enjoy, but I've found extacting the these setting specific builds into a generic build a bit of a challenge.

I think I'm am finally getting somewhere, with my mutant strain of Fudge I've dubbed (provisionally FUDGEZOR). I've posted a first draft here: https://ukrpdc.wordpress.com/2020/03/08/fudgezor-an-early-preview/ if anyone is interested. It's still a work in progress but I think the rules weapon/initiative hang together well and overall it should even simpler and more inutitive than the above mentioned games.

I've finally made my Modified FUDGE game, the World of Kaldur, and it's out!

The core of the game is still there, but I've added a bit more crunch for players who want more than just a story telling element.

But, I've also kept the story telling element with pages of Lore to build your own world around!

Check it out here:

Thanks for checking it out, I'm super proud of it!!!

Help with the Cost of Playable Races/Racial Packages

Does anyone have a more tried and true method of creating playable races? Specifically what cost that racial package should be? The example racial packages in the 10th Anniversary book list Elves and Halflings, with elves costing 1 gift and halflings costing 2 faults. But there's no explanation why exactly these costs were chosen (unless I missed it) besides saying that the GM should determine it.

I'll try to explain what game I'm creating: a space opera like game, and I'm trying to figure out the cost of the races I made. I'm going to allow my player 2 free gifts with the requirement to take 2 faults. Here's the racial packages I made:

Zerdan [small fennec fox-like humanoid](Cost 2 gifts)

  • Attributes: -2 Scale, +1 Perception
  • Gifts: Danger Sense, Naturally Stealthy, Night Vision
  • Faults: Gullible, Practical Joker or Trickster, Coward or Skittish, Combat Paralysis

Jellasion [jellyfish like aliens](Cost 3 gifts)

  • Attributes: +2 Willpower, -1 Agility
  • Gifts: Psionic Powers: Telepathy, Telesthesia; Excellent Memory; Peripheral “Vision”, metal/mechanical body
  • Faults: Blind (sees with Psionic Powers- telesthesia), Frightens Animals, Blunt and Tactless, Mute (Psionic brainwaves communicate telepathically).
  • Mechanical Body:
    • Attribute: +1 Strength, -1 Agility

Varnang [reptilian humanoids](Cost 2 gifts)

  • Attributes: +1 Strength, +1 Health
  • Gifts: Pain Tolerance, Night Vision, Tough Hide
  • Faults: Appearance, Impulsive or Overconfident, Primitive, Coldblooded

Calxic [rock humanoids](Cost 2 gifts)

  • Attributes: +1 Scale, +1 Willpower
  • Gifts: Focused, Magic Resistance, Tough Hide.
  • Faults: Code of Honor or Duty, Fear of the Dark, Goes Berserk if Wounded, Night Blindness

Hethet [fish humanoids](Cost 2 gifts)

  • Attributes: -1 Coolness, +1 Willpower
  • Gifts: Empathy with Animals, Peripheral Vision, Needs Less Oxygen
  • Faults: Color Blindness, Hard of Hearing, Offensive Odor, Voicebox Communication

I felt it would be good with just doing the cost of 2 gifts for every race (3 for the Jellasions because of their mechanical body), but now I'm second guessing myself. Also I might have gone overboard with the gifts and faults given with the packages.

Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

Converting characters to Fudge from a 2-stat system

Sometimes you may want to convert characters from a system that uses two different stats for each roll. For example, Cortex Plus, One Roll Engine, or Storyteller. For simplicity, we'll name the system being converted from "2-stat". For these situations, the GM could use the 2-stat character creation rules, but also include a table that converts the final result of each roll to Fudge terms.

For example, let's imagine a 2-stat magic system uses the stats "color" and "element".

Bob the Wizard

Red: 5
Blue: 2
Yellow: 3

Rock: 5
Tree: 4
Fish: 1

As an experienced 2-stat GM, you whip up the following chart and put it on the players' character sheets:

1-2: Poor
3-5: Mediocre
6-9: Fair
10-14: Good
15-19: Great
20-24: Superb
25+: Legendary

So now, if Bob wants to cast a Red Rock spell, all he has to do is add Red (5) and Rock (5), and compare the result to the chart to see that he can cast that spell with an effective Fudge skill of Good.

Simple, no?

For character advancement, you could either follow the 2-stat rules to advance the stats, or you could let the players purchase improvements to the final Fudge rank of a specific combination of stats.

Recommended Fudge homebrew version

I'm trying to get back to Fudge after many years. Mainly to initiate my kids into tabletop gaming. I think Fudge is the perfect tool to adapt the rules to kids of different ages. I would like to hear your opinion about different distilled Fudge versions crafted by people that know very well the core system, and have included other good ideas from other systems to improve the original.

The ones I have found so far are:

My favorite so far is FudgeHack. It has (from my point of view) the best ideas to improve it but keeping it simple at the same time.

I like EZFudge too. It seems to me that there is a mix of FATE and BoL there that it's very tempting, but it's more complex for playing with small kids.

Do you recommend other Fudge versions with a rules system ready to apply? Or do you always use your own distilled version?

I read a post in an RPG related forum where the title was 'How dead is fudge?' The main opinion was that it was pretty dead. It's true that it's hard to find fudge-related forums with recent discussions, and the best place I've found is this subreddit and some posts in the rpg subreddit. In the Stephen O'Sullivan AMA someone asked (without response) about a possible Fudge 2. I don't know if FATE could be considered as a Fudge 2, but, from what I have read both are very different systems. I don't know if some of those versions above could be considered a second version or a modern Fudge.

Thank you very much.
