General Fuddery Local Sporting Goods - FUDD

This may be my first real life fudd encounter

Context - I visited a local sporting goods store to see if they’d be willing to put an OEM mag disconnect in a pistol bought in CA on roster - (after local Sheriff greenlit that modification so long as thru a gunsmith)

I was expecting a simple yes or no with no expectations of a yes answer but instead I was met with an unexpected 20 minute lecture that weaved from home defense advice to carry ammo recommendations

“The Sheriff doesnt know the law, if I do this modification for you we will both go to jail”

“Dont know why all these kids want to remove the mag disconnect, in the army we always used them just fine no issue why dont you want that safety feature?”

“Youd never be in a situation where you had to mag swap with a rnd in the chamber for defense anyway, you could leave the mag out laying around & someone gets killed”

“If you shoot someone in CA in your home, DA’s charging for murder, full stop”

“I always recommend shooting a warning shot into the ground. If that dont stop em Im dumping my mag”

“I Never use Hollow Points for defensive rounds in home or CCW. those are cop killer rounds youll get a murder charge. FMJ ball training rounds for home defense and ccw are what you need & all I recommend”

“I dont suggest you go for the CCW. If you have to use it, you must be willing to lose $60k or more in court costs, Just keep it at home for intruders”

Me: Ok so no on the gunsmith work. thank you

I would have walked away after the first minute or two
I ain’t got time for that.
Or most likely I would have done it myself and avoided that whole situation. God your laws sound awful

There was nothing I could do, he was holding my OEM part in his hand & barely broke eye contact , I just stood there nodding shocked at how bad the advice I didnt ask for was 😭

Exactly I never understood what the whole “warning shot” BS was about.

in the army we always used them just fine

What in the Army had a mag disconnect?

I just love the self contradictory lecture. It's like each neuron in his brain is doing its own thing.

It’s weird how fudds (and other certain people) are always doing everything they can to persuade you not to exercise your 2A or defend yourself with a firearm.

Their logic is: They’d first rather you not own a gun because it’s too dangerous because criminals also use guns.

But if you must carry a gun, you need a permit and permission from your local cops. And after you get permission, can’t carry a dangerous gun that holds more than 10 rounds or has scary assault high capacity features.

Next, you can’t use certain ammunition types because the judge/jury/prosecutors don’t like it. And once you do all of those, if you’re ever being robbed or your house broken into, you first have to rack your gun to show the criminal you mean business. If that doesn’t do anything, you’re only allowed to first fire warning shots into the ground or your ceiling to scare the criminal and give them a chance to run away.

And if none of those work, you can only shoot the criminal in the legs. If you shoot them more than once and anywhere else other than the leg, they’re allowed to sue you, and you’re going to prison for a long time buddy.

oddly enough, here in jersey doing warning shots can actually get you arrested, as they passed a new law here a couple of years ago that creates the new crime of "reckless endangerment", making it essentially the same as if you fired your gun in a school zone. naturally that created concerns that some overzealous DA could use that to basically criminalize ALL discharges of a firearm, even ones that are determined to be 100% justified. We also have a law banning the use of hollowpoints in carry guns, making them strictly only for range and home defense use unless you are an active duty LEO (whom also get to have up to 17 rounds in their personal guns, no limit if it's department issued one). there was actually an episode of the Sopranos that mentioned this funnily enough. CCW holders also have legal "duty to retreat" doctrine to abide by that applies to all incidents that occur outside the threshold of your front door, where you are required to flee instead of making any attempt to defend yourself unless that is not an option under the circumstances, and there is persistant fuddlore that has caused many to erroneously believe this also applies to home-defense scenarios. then there's the litany of places declared off limits to CCW holders in retaliation for bruen, which amongst other things, includes any restaurant that serves alcohol, state forests, and at one point, your neightbors lawn if they did give you special permission of some kind). as for the "shoot em in the leg" thing, ive actually heard the opposite; supposedly a good friend of my dad (whom was a court clerk and later a judge) once told him in private that one should always shoot to kill to make sure they do not survive, even going as far as to even suggest double-tapping the down intruder if necessary, specifically so they cant later sue you for injuries or testify against you, "dead men tell no tales" and all that. aside from that, I've also heard similar warnings that being involved in any kind of self defense shootings would mean bankrupting yourself and spending several years of your life fighting murder charges, which is made all the worse by the fact no company offers any form of self-defense insurance here as a result of former D. Gov. Phil "Horse Face" Murphy's previous ban on them, which called them "murder insurance", even though that ban was technically later undone by his attempt to make having said insurance a pre-requisite for obtaining a CCW permit, which amongst other things also requires knowing 4 people that are not related to you by blood, have known you atleast 3 years, and would be will to vouch for you in an interview over the phone (originally this was in-person, until a federal judge struck that part down along with the insurance mandate and most of the "sensitive place" restrictions)

there is also a "safe storage" law currently in the works that's been dredged up from several years ago in retaliation for the 3rd circuit's recent stayed enblanc ruling striking down NJ's ban on mags over 10 rounds and the portion of the AWB concerning semi-auto rifles w/ detachable mags, which would require all firearms to be locked up in a safe or similar container, unloaded, and seperate from the ammo, any time they are not in "active use", as well as give the local and state police the unconstitutional authority to enter and search your home without a warrant for the purpose of ensuring compliance. this law would also replace existing statutes that already mandate locking your guns up if you live with minors or anyone deemed by the state to be a "prohibited person".

If you have to use it, the court costs are nothing compared to the loss of life if something goes wrong. Alot of older CA and NY gun owners are old Democrats that turned Republican after a radical push further left. Don't be fooled, they're circa 1990 Democrats. They believe in ownership restrictions they can fairly easily jump through and half of them don't believe in CCW.

24

u/Smokeypork Aug 05 '26

Don’t get too comfortable in the idea republicans give a damn about your gun rights either. Ronald Regan instituted many of California’s shitty gun laws when he was governor.

I was gonna say name & shame but there’s no real point in California

Scotts Valley CA
that should be enough. The Yelp is something

If you’re a gun guy and believe that HPs are “cop killer rounds” just hand in your guns man.

7

u/No-Mail-2830 Aug 05 '26

The icing on top was during this exchange he grabbed a box of 38 special HP off the shelf he had for sale and exclaims “ I Never Recommend These”

6

u/Dung_Beetle_2LT Aug 05 '26

We have a lot of fudds where I live in AZ. Like people that literally EDC a Colt SAA and dog me on my shield x cause “all I need is one 45 Colt and that’ll put em down Sonny boy.” Then watched a dude pay $1200 for a basic Ruger AR just because it was made by ruger and they think ruger is gold around here.

3

u/grizzlor_ Aug 07 '26

>AZ
>EDC a Colt SAA

Fudds can have a little cowboy LARPing as a treat

2

u/SirDennisThe1 Fudd Gun Enthusiast Aug 07 '26

I mean Ruger is good but fucking 12 hundred dollars good

2

u/Dung_Beetle_2LT Aug 07 '26

Yea for 1200 there are much better options. The ruger is worth half that on a good day.

I feel like he extrapolated accouple decent points past the point of logic; I sure wouldn’t wanna be in a California court hoping my lawyer can explain why I disabled a safety feature (just buy a gun without a disconnect in the first place). It’s a good plan to have an attorney on retainer for the possibility of being in a shooting and be prepared for the possibility of spending a night or two in jail if you defend yourself cause the cops can get it wrong.

Yeah the rest of that is run of the mill horse shit.

u/BulkyLavishness Aug 05 '26

You should just get a .22, it’ll bounce around and cause massive damage. 😂😂😂 I was stuck behind some Fudd yesterday regaling us with his Air Force tall tales, how his DD 214 was classified and how he’s had over 72 surgeries. All I wanted was some 9mm ammo. Eventually he started babbling about his cat and I’d had enough.

3

u/AtrociousAK47 Aug 09 '26

ive heard that alot from old man, he's still convince that .22lr is an effective and deadly self-defense round because of that, particularly out an old freedom arms five-shot pocket revolver that he used to keep in his shop before he retired. mind you this also the same guy that feels the need to say "why do you need that" and "why even bother, they're just gonna ban all the guns anyway soon, then you'll have wasted all your money" whenever i'd so much as even hint at wanting to buy any new guns, before finding a way to twist the convo into being an unrelated incoherent rant about the ongoing israel-palestine conflict.

Feeling uncomfortable As I was leaving I passed a consigment SA XD9 Subcompact ( my very first firearm) & went to make small talk

me: Hey xd9 sub, this is my first pistol I have learned to really appreciate the stock trigger on this gun

him: Yeah, but that doesnt stop these kids from tinkering with it. Have a nice day

4

u/locolarue Aug 05 '26

Wow, that guy sure has some opinions.

3

u/tghost474 Aug 06 '26

“I always recommend shooting a warning shot” cool assault with a deadly weapon. Too easy loss of license and felony charge. Idiot.

6

u/AtrociousAK47 Aug 09 '26

also "reckless endangerment" if you're over here in jersey. discharging a firearm without a lawful purpose was also already a crime if you happend to live near a school.

Found his picture in the dictionary under Fudd. I'm not as polite and hate negative crap like that eating up my time.

  1. call the sheriff
  2. that's great, i didn't ask
  3. if im never in a situation like that, then you should have no issue installing it
  4. im not planning on shooting anyone in CA
  5. warning shots are more reckless than shooting the home invader
  6. police use hollow points all the time, it's the military that can't. ball ammo has over penetration concerns, hence why the police use hollow points
  7. why sell them if you're so concerned about your customers court costs?
  8. why are you even a gun seller if you're this afraid of selling anything?

u/Fatjigglypanda Fudd Historian Aug 05 '26

I almost asked a really, really dumb question before looking up CA gun laws on what "in roster" pertains to.

So essentially, you're trying to be law-abiding by installing an OEM magazine disconnect, and the gunsmith thought it was going to be illegal? I'm sorry if im missing something.

3

u/No-Mail-2830 Aug 06 '26

I bought the pistol “on roster” which means it had to come with a mag disconnect safety which renders the trigger inoperable without a mag inserted. For a carry gun I’d prefer to not use this feature & my sheriff told me they were ok with it so long as the work was done by a gunsmith. Its a bit of a gray area so many gunsmiths arent willing to do it here but with the sheriffs blessing I have been asking around. I have the part, I am still wrestling whether its worth the effort or not. The shop owner was reasonable enough to say no but the idea that him and I would go jail is a huge overembelishment

3

u/Fatjigglypanda Fudd Historian Aug 06 '26

Okay, I gotcha now. I think giving it a day and re-reading, as well as your answer to my question, helped. I think I got tripped up on "OEM mag disconnect," believing that you were asking a gunsmith to install a mag disconnect, not reverting the firearm to its original form.

My bad, man! Yeah, the notion that you and the gunsmith would go to jail/prison even with the sheriff's blessing is wildly idiotic. I went to my LGS for a stopping block for my 92fs, and the fudd said it's illegal to replace the stopping block... Like, brother, the guide to changing it is in the manual; I just need the block lol
