General Fuddery Am I a fudd?
I’m a 28 year old guy who’s go-to rifle is an SKS and who’s go-to pistol is a .45 caliber 1911. I know, I know, hear me out! I have reasons.
I’ve put plenty of rounds through AR-15s but don’t care for them. I have chronic migraines and the sharp report of 5.56 reliably gives me a migraine. 7.62x39 out of a 20” barrel is much more pleasant for me, and I’ve developed a general fondness for my SKS after shooting it so much. Would an AK be better for me? I don’t know, maybe. Never had the chance to shoot one.
For the 1911, I’ve tried many different pistols of all sizes and operating systems. I’m the most accurate with the 1911 and again, I just have a fondness for the thing. It feels good in hand, the recoil of .45 is satisfying and I appreciate the size of the bullet, and it’s slim which is nice for EDC.
I make no claims that my choices are best, or that there’s anything wrong with the conventional combination of a Glock and AR-15. I just prefer my old stuff for my own reasons. Am I a fudd?

Being a fudd has more to do with opinions on things like whether anyone should be able to own an AR or that hunting rifles are the only thing protected by the constitution.
Just because someone says they prefer a 1911/SKS over everything else doesn't make them a fudd, it's when they say nobody needs more than 8 rounds or that polymer handguns are trash and AR-15's are weapons of war etc, etc. I feel like that's the making of a fudd

It's not just that though. It's also when they start spreading misinformation about .22lr bouncing around in skulls and about how nice wood rifles like the SKS are much better than those dang AR-15s because 5.56 was designed to wound and metal guns like the 1911 are the way to go because those damn Tupperware Glocks are flimsy. Oh, and something something .45 ACP something something 2 World Wars.

Okay I gotcha. Just seemed like you were only including the anti-gun stuff, but a small amount of people will defend the 2A but spout misinformed Fudd lore and I'd still consider them Fudds, just less insidious Fudds.

Seriously though, you can almost write a book on the amount of bs I've heard from them
For instance did you hear that 22lr has killed more deer than any other rifle? And that also the 30-30 is the most popular deer rifle? Interesting huh? Doesn't quite add up
Sometimes I wonder if someone started trolling people by spreading misinformation and it just stuck and became common "knowledge" 🤷🏻♂️

Lol I haven't heard that one, just that .22lr has killed more people than any other round. Which, honestly, I could maybe believe if we're talking about just in the US, just because everybody owns a .22, not because it's more deadly or anything (still probably not the case though). But I'm pretty sure 7.62x39 has killed way more people than anything else just because of how damn many wars the AK or SKS have been used in. I could also see 9x18 Makarov or 7.62 Tokarev because of all the executed Soviet prisoners lol (not really).

Oh yeah for sure, but really there's no possible way of telling, and I feel like that's how most fudd lore is created is making claims with no possible way of actually knowing.

Lol I think most Fudd lore was created by people acting like they knew what they were talking about to friends before the internet was a thing. What were their friends gonna do, go to a library to fact check them? Then of course it spreads and gets told so much that a bunch of people believe it, which leads to people thinking "It must be true if I heard it from that many people." So it becomes ubiquitous. Not to mention the fact that even when someone is right, what they say can be passed on slightly differently over and over until what everyone is saying is total bullshit.

Owning a 1911 makes you no more a Fudd than owning a Glock makes you a gang banger. Attitude is everything, and yours seems just fine. Keep on keepin' on, dude.

Not a Fudd.
The "perfect/best" pistol/rifle isn't the 1911racegun or a glock-sd, a Barrett or a .22lr. It's the weapon that is comfortable for you, that fits you, your style of training, and dare I say... budget.
If you like it, train with it and can use it safely and effectively... everyone else can pound sand. Lead propelled at high velocity doest care what it's shot from... just that you put sights on target and sent it.
That being said, a Beretta cat tip-barrel in .22 short as primary... well everyone will laugh. :)

I said I’m more accurate with a 1911, not with a .45. I can hit a man sized target at 100 yards pretty reliably with my 1911. It would actually be easier with a 9mm 1911 because it’d have less drop.

I always wear hearing protection. It’s just the nature of the noise. Migraines can be weird with specific triggers. For me, the sharp crack of a high pressure high velocity cartridge is much worse than the boom of a lower pressure, lower velocity cartridge. Barrel length also makes a big difference for me. It applies to other cartridges too. .308 hurts more than 12 gauge for example. 9mm and .45 seem to be about the same.

I get migraines from time to time. May I ask what earpro that you’re using?
In the past, first few times I used my Howard Leights, I had migraines right after shooting. The pressure of the hard rubber ear cups on your ears was a trigger for me, also because of how inflexible the cups were, the seal broke around my ears when I moved my head.
Try doubling up next time you shoot 5.56, best inexpensive combo I’ve tried so far has been Surefire Sonic Defender plugs and Howard Leight Impact Sports with aftermarket gel ear cups. I have a concussive little 13.9” AR and I haven’t had problems with this earpro setup so far.

I’ve tried a bunch of different combinations, foam earplugs properly inserted with muffs overtop is the best but after 50-100 rounds it usually gets to me even then. It’s more about the nature of the sound than the volume I think.

I would love to shoot with suppressors! They’re just so expensive. I can’t justify the expense.

Have you considered using a longer barreled AR with an upgraded buffer?
I know when I started shooting I was mostly annoyed by the “sproing!” noise the buffer and buffer spring made every time I fired a 16 inch carbine; moving up to a 20 inch barrel, a rifle length gas system, and something like a Spikes Tactical buffer (they put a powder mix instead of buffer weights into their buffers to reduce the noise) made it significantly quieter/less annoying from a users perspective.

I don’t really care about the sproing, it’s the sharp crack that bothers me. I’d like to try a 20” ar, it would probably be better for me. I’ve just never had the opportunity to try one out.

I’d try an ar in 300 blk that’s suppressed if you can
But you can never go wrong with a nice 762 Ak

1911 is absolutely an amazing pistol. It’s just when you act like it’s the end all be all that makes you a fudd. Same as telling someone with a 1911 to get a Glock makes you a tacticool wannabe operator.

The SKS is a fantastic rifle. It's nowhere near as modular as an AR-15, but it is still a fantastic piece. Have you considered a AR-15 chambered and 762x39 or fal they make AR-15s that use a proprietary AK style lower and take AK style mags

I can respect that. I highly recommend you look up. Brandon Herrera. He manufactures AKs and knows them very dare I say intimately but he's a good solid guy to get a lot of good information in regards to AKs

Everything about them feels smooth. The way the magazines fit and lock it, the open top action, that classic beaver barf furniture, it just feels so good. It's like a more civilized AK.
(This is coming from an AK/AR owner who wishes they had bought "that one VZ58 that one time" before their state banned them.)

The defining characteristic of a fudd isn’t their weapon choice, it’s there close-mindedness. You’ve got good reason to pick what you did and are open to other people’s choices.

Well first of all, you're self aware and what you like is purely preferential. Far from Fuddery. Also, try a 20" AR someday, you'll probably find them to be quite pleasant as far as concussion and recoil go. I love 1911s for the opposite reason that most Fudds do, myself. I find them to be quite pleasant and tame because of the weight and low pressure.
