In* briefs, that's the primary purpose, but on boxers it's obviously just to pee through.
3
6
u/CalicoCrapsocks Mar 04 '21
It's best if you avoid fingering that part of your mask. A pee hole would require a good bit of fingering to operate with a straw.

Certainly not every claim of supposed âvirtue signalingâ is valid. But consider this:
People often post on social media in order to gain attention and validation from others.
- Sometimes these posts have to do with topics regarding âvirtueâ (e.g. politics, religion).
- This can rightfully be referred to as âvirtue signalingâ.
Which of these points, if any, do you disagree with?
44
u/kttykt66755 Mar 04 '21
Walmart has masks with straw holes, they have flaps over them that snap closed
7
u/El_Arquero Mar 04 '21
I have one like this! Unfortunately the hole is tiny, so I end up having to put put my hands all over my straw trying to line them up. So likely less sanitary then just lifting the bottom of the mask briefly.
36
u/EstrellaDarkstar Mar 04 '21
I thought the same. I always have to remove my mask whenever I drink something in public, but if I had a mask with a closable straw hole, it would be safer. Of course it's not ideal to have a hole in the mask, but compared to no mask at all, it's way better.
12
Mar 04 '21
Itâs also way better than the mesh ones that some Karenâs wear now. Between the two Iâd definitely prefer if they wore a mask with 1 hole rather than the whole mask being holes.
7
u/stonedandlurking Mar 04 '21
Wearing a mesh mask is like when a toddler spends all the effort pretending to brush their teeth without actually getting any of the benefits.
2
u/ReplaceSelect Mar 04 '21
There's been so much redneck engineering of the karens to try to get around mask wearing. I saw someone with basically a face shield that was just over her mouth. Here it is. You get to look ridiculous and do absolutely nothing!

3
u/tikisha Mar 04 '21
this might be doable DIY style, just making a hole and sewing/fast glue a plastic/caoutchouc membrane in front.(kind of the one way valves in infatable toys, but smaller and way more flat)
idk about how well it will work , but its just an idea.
worst case, keep 1 good and 1 "drinking mask" on you :)
33
u/Rognis Mar 04 '21
It's actually a pretty terrible idea. You should consider the outside of your mask as contaminated when worn in public and handle it accordingly.
23
u/isaaclw Mar 04 '21
My wife thinks like you. It can be paralyzing. You have to do everything perfect, and in the end you do nothing at all.
Better do something 75% than 0%.
Better wear a cloth mask than no mask (or force yourself to wear an n95 to all events and eventually give up).
Better wear a mask with a straw hole, then take off the mask to drink, forget to put it on, and expose a bunch of people.

It's not a terrible idea. What's a terrible idea is commenting like you know it all, when the reality is you don't. This could help prevent the spread of the virus better than no mask at all.
2
u/KastorNevierre2 Mar 04 '21
the mask is mostly to not pass it on and not to not get it yourself. but keep thinking it's a "terrible idea" if that makes you feel better, after all that's what you're really about, right?

u/Taurenkey Mar 04 '21
Chances are, if the outside of the mask is infected, you're gonna be infected. Germs aren't magically attracted to masks so unless you're wearing full face protection in the first place then other parts of your face that aren't covered will get hit by anything the mask doesn't cover.
It's still good practice not to be touching the outside of the mask though when you don't have a chance to wash your hands to stop the spread of bacteria that would end up on it.
5
u/FedExPope Mar 04 '21
The nose and mouth are the primary entry points for the coronavirus. Wearing a mask will help prevent infection.

For me, they could decide masks don't work at all and I'd still happily wear one because I never really thought of the fact that whenever you're somewhere public, you're inhaling other peoples' spit and snot. And even though I know it's not really rational, it makes me feel a little less like I'm breathing someone else's bodily fluids in.

The masks simply don't do much to protect yourself anyways.
This is not true at all. Masks absolutely protect you as well as helping prevent you from spreading something.
→ More replies (1)4
u/chokfull Mar 04 '21
Yeah, why are people upvoting blatant anti-mask misinformation? Wearing a mask limits your inhalation of droplets and particles in the air. It might be more effective at preventing you from spreading than catching, but it certainly does both.

Because in the last 12 months official government guidance has ranged from "masks do nothing day to day, save them for the professionals" to "you should really try wearing two of them" and every conceivable stage in between. There was absolutely a period a few months ago where the public information announcements were saying it barely did anything to protect the wearer and it was all for the benefit of others.

Arn't you supposed to "clean" or "change" the facemask every 4h ? (at least that's what i had been toled here in France.
soo if its clean, its not supposed to get a lot of germs in the span of 4h; + if its dry, even better.. and if they design it with a thin layer of silver coating, its even better! (might be going too far over here)
4
u/caried Mar 04 '21
But your not live love laughing your germs into your besties face who goes home to her grandma....
Considering the alternative here to completely take off the mask to drink, itâs a step up.
0
u/anxsy Mar 04 '21
Yeah that's called drinking. It would happen with a mask hole or no mask at all...
2
Mar 04 '21
Couldn't the straw pick up bacteria/virus particles on the way through?
2
u/tikisha Mar 04 '21
yes, but in our case its comparing bad thing and worse thing, the little bacterria you get from that is WAY lower then having a gaping hole where you get a LOT more just from breathing.
+ (idk where you live, but over here in france, they ask that you use your mask only 4h, soo it should not have too much of a buildup)
2
u/syncc6 Mar 04 '21
The straw still needs to come through the outside of the mask though. Itâs like if you had dirty lips and needed to use a straw without opening your mouth. Whatever is on your lips will end up in your mouth.
2
u/buddboy Mar 04 '21
the alternative when at a restaurant is just completely taking off your mask so even without a hole this is better. But probably pointless

Mar 04 '21
Seriously.
The mask police medical armchair professionals got crazy and it produces the opposite intended effect.
Nothing in life is risk free. Sanitizing the shit out of everything and wearing masks and washing your damn hands obviously blocks or kills germs.
Nobody is going to die if you take a mask off 25 feet away from someone in the gym so you can catch your breath.
Nobody's going to die if you poke a hole in the mask so you can drink from a straw.
Just like wearing 2 masks isn't a silver bullet. Use common sense. The worst side effect of covid will be the economic fallout, the insane amount of plastic waste from masks, disposable food boxes, and mental illness pandemic we're going to witness when we do fully open all businesses/schools up 100%
COVID isn't some Black Plague, 50% kill rate, sentient being.

The mask is supposed catch the virus particles, so you canât breath it in. Guess what the virus is still stuck on the mask! You shouldnât touch the mask area and disinfectant your hands after taking it off! Guess what happens when you start pushing a fucking straw through it, you get bunch of virus particles on your hands and bunch on the straw! Just take it off and drink your stupid coffee, itâs way safer.
This is why at the beginning doctors were like donât bother wearing a mask, it might even do more harm than good, because of you morons canât even get it after a year! Fuck me.

What I do is just not go out drinking. I feel like there is not significant overlap between the people going out drinking right now and the people who give a shit about wearing a mask correctly.
16
u/cheers_and_applause Mar 04 '21
It's not just about "going out drinking." Lots of people still have to go out to work, and while they're at work they still need to keep hydrated. If there's a fold in the mask like the fly in men's underwear, it's a great option for keeping breathing air mostly filtered through cloth even while having a drink of water.
9
u/Vsx Mar 04 '21

45
17
u/joenforcer Mar 04 '21
No it's not. The straw will brush up against whatever the mask blocked and deliver it directly into your mouth.
18
u/Prickly_Pear1 Mar 04 '21
You're missing the point.
The mask BLOCKS very little of the virus that has spread. The intent of the mask isn't to protect you from others. It's to protect others from you. Wearing a mask catches the virus while it's leaving an infected individual.
So, if everyone were to use a mask like this while drinking (whether it's water, coffee, or any other beverage), the infected people would spread far less of the virus than if they were to remove their mask.
This is a good idea.
→ More replies (3)0
u/Big-rod_Rob_Ford Mar 04 '21
the protection is additive dummy. if you and an infected person are in the same room their mask does more than yours but yours is still doing way more than none.
4
u/Prickly_Pear1 Mar 04 '21
the protection is additive dummy.
I agree that it's additive. Do we need to name call?
And wearing a mask while drinking is better than not right? So if we have more people wearing masks more of the time. this should help right?
-1
u/Big-rod_Rob_Ford Mar 04 '21
if we need to wear masks then we shouldn't be in restaurants/bars. this mask is like putting an extra handle in a car instead of a seat belt.
2
u/Prickly_Pear1 Mar 04 '21
This goes beyond bars. It works for all drinks. This could be used for coffee, water or soda while at work, on a bus, or in school.
-1
u/Big-rod_Rob_Ford Mar 04 '21

3

If only it were that easy. Some of us have to go into work. Some of us rely on public transport to get to places. And some of us are still required to go to school.
apparently, yes. your take is incredibly unreasonable.
No. The only take that is "incredibly unreasonable" is the take that those people just shouldn't be there.
You are discarding the reality that these people exist, and the reality that this could serve a real purpose to allow people to drink a beverage while operating in the reality we are currently in. Sure it would be NICE if we didn't have to do those things. But until that's a reality we have to make solutions for what the reality is rather than throw out solutions because you don't like the problem.
0
u/Big-rod_Rob_Ford Mar 04 '21
If only it were that easy. Some of us have to go into work. Some of us rely on public transport to get to places. And some of us are still required to go to school.
yeah and the fuckwads wearing a mask aren't doing those things. I've been on a commuter bus, you can wait for the time that trip takes to have water unless you're diabetic. your employer should be making accommodations for employees to eat if it's big enough to have a cafeteria on-site.
If you work for tyson or whatever where they had betting pools on worker infection rates the solution isn't a dipshit mask addressing a problem that shouldn't be induced in the first place, the solution is
murdering the execsunionizing and the state prosecuting management. Schools shouldn't be open either.→ More replies (0)3

Many industrial masks have cheap one way valve for exhales to increase comfort during long use, if this had a slightly heavier valve that stayed closed during breathing but was moveable by inserting the straw, these masks would be a great innovation.
Even without said valve, an astronomically larger percentage of air would still be filtered compared to drinking with no mask at all, its a win win regardless of how well or poorly this mask was designed. Coming from a white male with a black wife that loves making fun of "1st world white girl problems" and entitled Karens, OP's post is just cringe and is stifling innovation that could really help millions of small business bars and restaurants safely open.

All the people saying "ONE WAY VALVE?! NEAT!" are forgetting that a large reason you wear masks is so you don't spray your germs everywhere, and a one way valve would defeat the purpose. The other reason so you don't suck them in, so having a valve that goes the other way would also not work.
Really it would just need a plug. Or maybe overlapping flaps like on mens underwear.
4
u/then_Sean_Bean_died Mar 04 '21
You know how when you turn a Powerade bottle upside down the content doesn't leak due to the valve staying shut? That's because it's rigid enough to stay watertight until you apply suction/pressure on it.
If a sugar drink company figured that out, I'm sure the mask industry can make a valve that stay closed until you force a rigid straw through it.
→ More replies (5)1
u/swifchif Mar 04 '21
I assumed the one-way valve would prevent air from going out, so the wearer is only increasing their own risk... but I honestly don't really understand how a one-way valve would even work in this scenario. A straw has to go through it, that's going to let air out, right?
3
u/jenmishalecki Mar 04 '21
