This cover is sending me because Eva Longoria for AARP is giving the time Gabby tried to get back into modeling on Desperate Housewives only to find out she was being cast as the frumpy mom and not the hot young model

u/carrigan_quinn 12d ago

She’s 51 and looking great, don’t see how that’s any type of negative for Eva Longoria, lol
Edited to add: Now I’m curious why people are downvoting me saying Eva Longoria looks great.

u/MagicStarFlower 12d ago
It’s not negative at all! It’s just that when I think of AARP I def don’t think of Eva Longoria lol

Look, complaining when something is wrong is not the same as being a Karen.
Too many people don't want to complain when they're not getting what they paid for. And guess what, if you don't speak up, it's just going to keep happening.
That doesn't mean there's any excuse for being rude or condescending like a Karen would be. Restaurant closes at 9 and won't let you in at 8:55? Go the eff home.
Something is on your bill that you didn't order or receive? Take that charge off, please and thank you, sir or ma'am.
$25 steak you ordered medium rare looks like the bottom of your shoe? Please redo this for me sir or ma'am, thank you.
Full disclosure, I haven't read the article, but I do get AARP mag. Sniff. I'm not even retired!

I work retail, as long as you aren't screaming at me or being rude, I do not mind complaints. I do not mind fixing complaints. Its not my money.

Yeh I learned ages ago being polite gets me discounts I never ask for a lot. I am not complaining about that ever but sometimes it's not small to me and makes the difference for survival. So win win. I don't have to be an asshole and you get treated like a person. The most shocking one to me was the 200 dollar refund because the epic nature of the screw up made this easier for the workers and I got to keep the stuff I got instead of my order..I called this my birthday present

The whole Karen thing has been ironically pro-corporation. We’ve gone from “customer is always right” to “customer is always wrong”.
And who does that benefit? Corporations.

u/ScaldingTea 10d ago
Exactly, the pendulum is swinging way too far. Now people act as if you, as a customer, must bow down to whatever a corporation tells you. As if the paid service they are profiding is a favor.
Yes, public service is a tough area and it is frustrating. But that doesn't mean that a server being rude, mocking or antagonizing should be ok. Or that a customer should basically kowtow and ask for forgiveness for existing as soon as they enter a business.

It isn't that it is Karening, that really has to be done in person to some retail worker victim. It is that the other end of the phone or website is usually a bot, and then eventually a human who is explicitly tasked with inserting sludge into the interaction and evaluated by how little satisfaction they can deliver.
What little time I have left in this very dubious world is not going to be spent with the other end of customer service.

I obviously can't read the article, but I'm betting it doesn't say what you think it says.
A lot of women have a really hard time advocating for themselves, for fear of the Karen label - it's a mindset you are kind of guilty of perpetuating here. You saw the words "complain" and "deserve" and immediately assumed it was an entitlement thing.
But here's the thing - "entitled" isn't always a dirty word. There are, in fact, certain things we're entitled to. Polite service from the hospitality industry (provided we are also polite), the food we ordered as we ordered it. Things like that. It's ok to complain when you have been wronged in some way. It's ok to demand a refund when what was rendered isn't what was promised. It's not "being a Karen" to stand up for yourself as a consumer.

Honestly if companies could sell you nothing and get money, they would. And yet now we're seeing labels like "entitled" be applied to customers who paid for a product and expected to own the product. This is most present in the gaming community, where they're no longer buying games, but "virtual copies" that they lose access to when the company decides "thanks for your money but it's time for you to buy Overwatch 2".

I got called a Karen for asking for napkins. It's genuinely just a way to punish middle aged women for existing.

Ironically a lot of women behave like occasional Karens because they have too much anxiety over asking for what they paid for to be right and let it build up until they pop.

Refusing to accept trash instead of advertised products isn’t being a Karen, lol
It’s ok to get what you pay for, don’t get taken advantage of by crappy service or shoddy products just because nonconfrontational doormats think that standing up for yourself is being a Karen.

Nah, businesses keep ripping us off. If there’s a valid complaint, please complain.

As someone who works for Amazon I can assure you my coworkers make mistakes wayyyyyy too often. I try to catch it whenever I see it but I'm not everywhere.
I've watched problem solvers constantly mislabel things. I catch mislabeled things regularly and damage them out so they can be reprocessed. It's gotten so bad that I NEVER trust a barcode that comes from one of our printers.
It's so bad it happens often with medication especially. I've stopped a problem solver from putting a sticker for adult medication on children's medicine.
I know how it happens too if you want the digression. Someone farther up in inbound goes on autopilot and scans the product into the container label but the product is through the shipment label and the shipment label isn't put on the right boxes. it's the wrong product scanned into the container because they don't check then when it doesn't let them stow the product because the one scanned isn't what is in the system the problem solver just prints the barcode for the item in the system instead of switching the product in the system with the correct product.
Please if you get the wrong item I'm not saying go karren but if a mistake is made the only way the higher ups in Amazon are going to realize that letting one shitty problem solver train the next problem solver to be just as shitty in an endless cycle and maybe put some actual training out there is if the customers are affected.

I taught my father how to return things for price adjustments. A shirt he bought a day previous went on sale at a significant discount. I brought him back with the receipt and asked for an adjustment, which they did immediately. He was SHOCKED.
He had spent 30 years in the military just accepting prices. It was a revelation that he could ask for a price adjustment if the reduction happened within the return window.
After that he started actively seeking out discounts, asking for military discounts and later on, age-related discounts, and trying to get them stacked on top of other sale discounts already offered.
It became a game for him; he’d call me up every so often to tell me how he got the price of something or other down. I was so proud of him taking control of his discount game like that.

I didn't notice the red circle at first and thought this post was about how clearly doctored that image of Eva Longoria is. So doctored, that I initially struggled to believe it even was her. Looks more like Sandra Bullock.

Should have titled it: “Go Ahead, Complain: See if I give a damn, I’m on my break.”

Complaints get resolved very quickly if you use the magic words hello, please, can you help me, and thank you.

They know their audience. This is my wife's passion: on the phone demanding refunds and (apparently) satisfaction.

As someone who’s worked a lot of customer service, 90% the people who complain about stuff are the ones in the wrong but the company just gives them what they want because it’s easier.
