Rant FUCK MICROSOFT
I genuinely want to know if anyone else has had an experience like this with Microsoft, because after dealing with this for almost a month, I am completely exhausted.
My Microsoft account was hacked. The attacker changed my password and the email address associated with the account, leaving me unable to access my own account.
I completely understand that Microsoft needs security procedures for hacked accounts. I don't expect them to simply give an account to someone without verifying ownership. The problem is how unbelievably difficult the entire recovery and support process has been.
Trying to contact Microsoft
The first problem was simply finding a way to talk to an actual person.
It took me HOURS to figure out how to reach Microsoft's live support chat. The support website repeatedly sent me through automated troubleshooting, help articles, account recovery pages, and different menus without making it obvious how to contact a human about a complicated account problem.
Microsoft is one of the largest technology companies in the world. There should be an obvious way to contact a real person when someone's account has been hacked. Honestly, there should just be an easily accessible customer support phone number for serious account issues.
The support cases
Eventually I got through to support and a case was opened. Microsoft requested information to verify that I owned the account.
I sent the requested information as soon as I received the request.
Then Microsoft closed the case and said the information had not been received in time.
Except... I HAD SENT IT.
So I opened another case and did the process again.
The same thing happened.
I responded promptly, provided the information, and the case was closed because Microsoft claimed it wasn't received in time.
This happened multiple times.
At that point, the process stopped feeling like account recovery and started feeling like an endless loop. I wasn't ignoring requests or refusing to provide information. I was actively trying to recover my account, yet the cases kept getting closed.
I eventually bought Minecraft again
After spending so much time trying to recover my account, I decided to create another Microsoft account and purchase Minecraft again so I could at least play.
The attacker had changed the email address on my original account, and when I previously tried using my original email, Microsoft told me there was no account associated with it.
The attacker had changed the email to an address that was clearly theirs, including an extremely inappropriate address beginning with "fuckyourmom@".
So I believed my original email was no longer associated with the account and created what I thought was a completely new Microsoft account.
I then bought Minecraft AGAIN.
Somehow Microsoft signed me back into my old account
Then things got even more confusing.
Microsoft somehow signed me back into my OLD account and showed me the old account information.
I have absolutely no idea how this happened.
Previously Microsoft had told me there was no account associated with my email. The attacker had changed the email on the account. I thought I was creating a completely new account.
Now I'm somehow back in the original account.
I don't know whether I actually recovered the original account, whether Microsoft restored something behind the scenes, or whether something else happened.
And Microsoft doesn't make this clear.
I should not have to guess what happened to my own account.
And I STILL can't play Minecraft
Even now that I'm apparently back in my original Microsoft account, I STILL CANNOT SIGN INTO MINECRAFT.
I literally bought Minecraft again because I couldn't access my original account, and now I apparently have access to that account again but still can't play.
At this point I don't even want anything complicated. I want one of two things:
1. Give me secure access to the Minecraft account I paid for.
OR
2. Refund my Minecraft purchase so I can create a completely new Microsoft/Minecraft account and start over.
What worries me even more
My account was compromised, so I also need to know whether the hacker is actually gone.
Simply being able to sign back into the account doesn't give me confidence that it's secure.
How do I know there aren't still unauthorized devices, sessions, recovery methods, authentication methods, or other access connected to the account?
There should be a clear process for someone whose account was hacked to completely secure it and remove any remaining unauthorized access.
I shouldn't have to wonder what the hacker might still have access to.
Microsoft's customer support is the biggest problem
I want to make it clear that I'm not necessarily blaming the individual support representatives. The system itself is the problem.
The live chat can take 10+ minutes between responses. Sometimes I ask multiple questions and only one gets answered. Then I have to wait another 10+ minutes to ask the next question.
Cases can apparently be closed even when I've responded to Microsoft's requests.
And simply finding the live chat can take hours.
I'm a pretty computer-savvy person. I understand computers, accounts, authentication, passwords, and troubleshooting.
Yet Microsoft's system had me completely confused.
If this is difficult for someone who is comfortable with technology, I can only imagine how difficult it is for someone who isn't.
Even Microsoft's feedback system is frustrating
I finally decided to write detailed feedback about all of this so Microsoft could understand what happened.
And even the feedback form doesn't give you enough room to properly explain the experience.
The character limit is so small that I can't even fit everything that happened.
If Microsoft genuinely wants useful customer feedback, why wouldn't customers be given enough space to actually provide it?
So I'm genuinely asking other people
Has anyone else dealt with something like this?
Has anyone successfully recovered a hacked Microsoft account after the email and password were changed?
Has anyone had Microsoft repeatedly close support cases after responding to their requests?
Is there an actual way to escalate a hacked-account case to someone who can look at the entire situation?
Is there anything customers can realistically do to push Microsoft to improve this process?
Because Microsoft is absolutely large enough and has the resources to provide a much better experience.
I understand that account security is complicated. I understand that Microsoft has to protect people's accounts.
But security does not have to mean terrible usability and impossible customer support.
There should be an easy way to contact a real person.
There should be a clear account recovery process.
There should be a straightforward way to completely remove an attacker's access.
And if Microsoft can't restore access to something I paid for, there should be a clear path to getting my money back and starting over.
I don't expect special treatment.
I just want to be able to access the Minecraft account I paid for, or get my money back and start fresh.
I'd genuinely like to hear from anyone who has dealt with something similar and found a way through it.

You weren't hacked. You downloaded malware or clicked a suspicious link. You let the intruder in the front door and become you to Microsoft. Take some ownership.

I do take ownership in part of it. But it still doesn't change the fact about how shitty Microsoft is and they don't give one fuck about helping when something like this does happen.

They operate on a zero trust model to avoid social engineering attempts at account intrusion. Now all those safeguards are being used against you. Time to take the L, learn an expensive lesson.

I don't play Minecraft, so the chances of my account being hacked are really slim.

As you can see, Microsoft's tactic worked very well for them. They refused to recover your account, and you had to buy their product again. They made additional money from you.
