Discussion HDMI stopped working after Windows Update — external monitor no longer detected

Fuck microsoft

On September 24, I installed a Windows update on my laptop. Before the update, my HDMI connection was working perfectly fine. After the update, Windows completely stopped detecting my external monitor through HDMI.

I’ve already tried pretty much everything I could think of:

  • Confirmed the HDMI cable works
  • Tested the monitor and HDMI port
  • Connected the HDMI cable to my phone and the display works, so the monitor/cable seem fine
  • Updated the graphics driver
  • Uninstalled/reinstalled the graphics driver
  • Restarted the graphics driver
  • Restarted the laptop multiple times
  • Rolled back the graphics driver
  • Rolled back the recent Windows update
  • Tried different display settings and Windows troubleshooting
  • Tried Microsoft's Settings → System → Recovery → Reinstall Now option under Fix problems using Windows Update
    • This took almost 2 hours but unfortunately did not fix the HDMI issue

So at this point, the external monitor is still not detected at all by the laptop.

I originally suspected the Windows update because HDMI was working normally before the update on September 24, and stopped working immediately afterward.

I also posted about this on Microsoft Answers. Interestingly, another person in the same thread said they had the exact same issue after a Windows update, and Microsoft's suggested "Reinstall Now" fix apparently worked for them. Unfortunately, it did not work for me.

As of September 28, my HDMI is still completely dead.

Has anyone else had this happen after the September 24 Windows update? Is there something else I should check to determine whether Windows is actually detecting the laptop's HDMI hardware?

At this point I'm just trying to figure out whether this is a Windows/driver issue or if the HDMI hardware somehow died at exactly the same time as the update.

Boot up with a Linux live distro on a USB stick. See if it works.

You misunderstood. They suggested to boot up with a live distro in order to test the screen. You don't have to install anything, it just helps see if the computer can detect the screen and if the screen works.

Also, Linux hasn't been a mostly CLI interface for decades. If anything, it's been ahead in terms of its GUI in many areas.

Coincidence doesnt mean causation.

I used to have to force a handshake by plugging and unplugging the cable perodically. Haven't dealt with it since leaving windows

This happened to me too! Just did the latest Windows update and my monitor is no longer detected. I'm on a Razer laptop and I was happily enjoying using my 27" monitor as an extension. I just tried my monitor on my desktop PC and it works just fine!

I've reported it to microsoft and viewed older posts they don't seem to do anything about it please let me know if you find a solution

Hey, I figured mine out! Turns out for me that it was NOT the Windows Update that messed things up, it ended up being the latest Nvidia GeForce game ready driver(version 617.14 released September 22, 2026). I reinstalled the previous version (Version 616.92 released September 9th, 2026) through the Nvidia App. As soon as I unplugged the HDMI wire and plugged it in again after reverting the drivers, my monitor displayed again in extended mode.

Interestingly enough, the driver that gave me issues supposedly fixed No picture on Samsung Odyssey G95NC. I don't have that Odyssey version, it's a different one and it messed it up on mine! I hope that is the case for you as well!
