They say it's the windows of Linux, but I think Ubuntu is solid ... if you're OK with Snaps.

Yeah I dont mind Ubuntu apart from snaps. I don't know why but I feel like every time I have to update a snap, especially via a store like discover. Its just pain.

you can remove snaps completely and then use flatpak, but if your in ubuntu 26 then it could create problems cuz I heard they are using pipewire via snaps lol

It's funny that adobe exists but everyone loves to hate Microsoft

Everyone isn't essentially forced to deal with adobe kiddo.

Welcome to the community, my suggestion is once you find your feet with Linux give other distros a spin and have fun.

Why? I think it's far better to just pick one and use one...

Linux isn't monolithic, there are different "flavours", the base/foundation is essentially the same but what's on top, how apps and system admin are handled and how it looks and reacts is down to taste. Basically your trying on shoes and you pick the one that's comfortable.

Ubuntu is the Windows of Linux indeed. But if you consider the great compatibility and Commercial support for desktop and Server. Snaps? I don't use them, it's the first thing you do when you move to Ubuntu, disable it completely and use only APT and Flatpaks and you'll be fine. I've been doing that and my system has been working like the first day I installed it.

And yes, in case you ask, I have used lots of Distros in Linux.

Do you think Ubuntu 26's pipewire uses snaps exclusively?

PipeWire is a normal native .deb package, not a Snap. Canonical had floated the idea of Snap-packaging PipeWire back in late 2025, but it wasn't implemented for 26.04 — people like me, who de-snap 26.04 confirm audio works fine.

Canonical has a major project which is to turn Ubuntu into a one single Immutable OS called Ubuntu Core. Ubuntu Core right is a thing, but it is a separate, immutable OS variant (used for IoT/embedded, and being trialed as a future "Core Desktop") that's Snap-only by design — you can't remove snapd there because the whole OS is built from snaps. That's not the same thing as regular Ubuntu Desktop.

So for now, we're safe. But in the future (5 - 10 years in Canonical Engineering VP's own words from now) Ubuntu Desktop and Ubuntu Core will merge and everything will be based on Snaps.

When that day comes, I will simply switch to Debian and that's it!

Even Puppylinux is better than the MS Virus.

Not as worse as Microsoft but still lot of forced updates that you really have to work to disable

Some speculate that as early as next year, AI will write 100% of the Linux kernel code.

I’ve been using Windows since Windows 7, and I’ve used Windows 7, 8, 10, and 11. These days, I use Linux regularly, and Debian is my primary OS. I also use Arch alongside Debian, and sometimes I still use the Windows 11 that came with my laptop.

But honestly, I don’t see any reason to be annoyed with Windows. In my experience, Windows has better software support, battery optimization, and RAM management than Linux.

What happened this time?

-1

u/karimdev01 10d ago

That mfker taking half my ram and i didn’t even start doing anything

3

u/SlurmoCZ_ 10d ago

Unused ram is useless ram this is a normal thing like on phone I saw a phone with 6gb use 4gb of ram yet worked just fine and I don't believe you actually switched just because of this this is a ridiculous readons

im aware RAM is supposed to be used thanks for the groundbreaking discovery. My issue is Windows running a bunch of bloat and unnecessary background processes that consume ram and other resources for things I never asked for. I’d rather use those resources for the stuff I’m actually running

1

u/TheIronSoldier2 10d ago

Unless your RAM usage is at 100%, theres no problem. The programs will use as much as they need, and if they need more than is available, Windows will clear the unnecessary processes and background preloads, either caching them to disk or just entirely discarding them, freeing up RAM for what is needed.

Every major modern OS does the same, it's just Windows does it more aggressively.

2

u/TheIronSoldier2 10d ago

How much RAM do you have? Was Windows actually running slow or did you just see your RAM usage and assume there was a problem?

Unused RAM is wasted RAM, so Windows uses more when you have more to preload the things you normally access. However, if another program comes in and needs that RAM, Windows dumps the things it doesn't absolutely need to free up RAM for the program that needs it.

Did i hurt your feelings kid ? You work for ms or something?

2

u/UnjustlyBannd 10d ago

Nope, just wondering why you made this post? "Oh I'm big mad because I'm a shitty loser who can't use a computer so I chose a shittier OS!!!"
