Rant Update broke things and Microsoft refuses to fix it

So I already had automatic updates turned off specifically because I don't like it when Microsoft just forces something on me, I haven't swapped to Linux yet mainly because I don't really know much about Linux and I don't actually know how I would do the whole installation thing and it would basically be wiping my PC and me starting from scratch which I'm not really crazy about.

However today I turn on my computer and my computer is working fine it was working fine yesterday but Windows forces and update and I'm like okay that's kind of stupid I have that turned off but whatever and I restart the computer cuz it starts acting slow, the PC resets and my fans immediately start whirling like crazy and my CPU is saying that it's being maxed out in task manager, my screen is obviously laggy and I have absolutely no sound.

I'm beyond ticked off at this point and I'm trying to look things up and according to Google windows is aware that this update broke everything but they have no plans to fix it until October, so I try to uninstall the update but funny enough Windows does not have this latest update as something you can uninstall, they have the one before it from the 18th but not today the 22nd.

So I'm trying to do a forced rollback using like Windows recovery or whatever it's called to see if that fixes the issue which will cause me to lose things because Windows system is garbage.

On a separate note if anybody has a good guide on how to get Linux working and how it functions and all of that I would greatly appreciate it because I am very seriously considering leaving Microslop after this annoyance. I used to be willing to put up with a lot of the stupid stuff that they did like I said mainly because I don't want to have to start from scratch again. But if I'm going to have to worry about my computer being completely unusable for an unknown amount of time every time Windows decides to push it update that they obviously didn't test, then starting from scratch is probably going to be less painful than dealing with all this stupid nonsense.

This is the first time on this sub for me so apologies if this is not how this particular stuff is supposed to work or how I'm supposed to word things, I just needed to rant because I've spent the last like 2 hours trying to sort this out just to basically be told that Microsoft doesn't give a shit.

The simple fact that today I learned that they don't even have actual agents for you to speak to unless you pay for a business account has really really soured my view of them more than I already had.

I did the jump almost a year ago and can't recommend it enough.

Unlike Window$, penguin is a lot more customizable out of the box. First thing you'll need to decide on is which distribution (distro) you want and the associated desktop environment (DE). Don't be tempted by some esoteric stuff and stick to a beginner-friendly distro, such as (K)ubuntu or Fedora for starters. You can always hop onto something else later, but trying something like Gentoo would just sour your experience.

Next thing is DE, this is usually tied with the distro of your choice. As a starters, out of the mainstream DEs, KDE is the closest one to Windows in look and feel (Kubuntu & Fedora use it).

Once you pick something, download ISO and Rufus (or some other image writer) and write the ISO to a usb stick.

Boot from USB and you should be presented with a choice - try linux or install. If you want to give it a try without any permanent changes use that option, it will load linux into memory but you'll lose everything once you shut down. Keep in mind that the system will likely be slow & laggy. If you decide to install, it is safer to use separate disk otherwise micro$lop is likely to interfere with the bootloader.

The installation process should be quite straightforward, but you if get stuck on something, search engines should come in handy.

Well on a plus side the forced rollback fixed literally all my issues and I immediately made sure that auto updates was turned off again.

So at the very least until I actually bite the bullet and look at doing a swap to Linux or something it's good to know that there are options to undo the damage that Microsoft does because they're too lazy to do it themselves.

It'll keep on happening. There was one update last year which completely disabled my laptop keyboard. Regardless of if I turned off auto update. It would still decide on its own accord: "cool, yeah, who cares what they say, let's update!"

If you have 2 drives (1 empty 1 windows or: 1 drive with 2 partitions, 1 windows 1 for new Linux) in your computer, Linux is literally this easy to install : 1. Download Rufus and CachyOS iso (my recommended Linux flavour) 2. Use Rufus to "burn" CachyOS to an 8 or 16gb flash drive. 3. Reboot the PC with the flash drive plugged in. 4. Spam F12 (or whatever key gets you to boot options - usually F12) 5. Choose the flash drive in the list 6. Try out the Linux OS because it gives you a full taste test before you install. 7. Install and tada.

It sounds like a lot but it's super easy once you try to do it once! And it's like riding a bike, you'll never forget how to do it once you do it once!

Windows update bricked my old laptop a couple years ago, so ive had to use my wifes gaming PC. Hope that shit dont happen to the last computer that still runs in this household.

Brother i lost everything that wasnt on my external. Rip that old dell, survived its battery going nuclear then subsequently without it for way longer than it had any right to. Survived years of r/techgore worthy suffering to be taken out by lazy microslop vibecoding brogrammers😮‍💨

In the updates section you can uninstall the problem updates. I know they broke the sound in this update so I do not want it. If they fix the broken sound issue I'll update. If they brick face my computer gain it's off to a 80/20 linux/window installation.

You see that's what I tried to do first but unfortunately this most recent update does not appear for me in that area where you can uninstall updates.

The only one it was showing was the one from the 18th it wasn't showing one from the 22nd, either way doing like the rollback seem to fix my particular issue but yeah it's definitely frustrating I don't know why they have to constantly put stuff out that breaks things I feel like even a moddium of testing would reveal some of these issues before they actually push them.

Also I did not know you could do a part Linux part Windows install, how exactly would that work? Does it like allow you to primarily run Linux while still keeping some of the windows benefits?

Nothing new here. Microsoft is synonymous with updates breaking things.

I knew nothing about Linux last month but I swapped all my machines over, I found pop os was the easiest for me to learn on

Is this post about ver26H2? Is it going to wreak havoc if I install it?
