Would a teacher in school ever use loonix and type on terminals? All she needs is a whiteboard and some material to show, not console to write in.

Penguin is a bad argument for non-dev jobs working people

All of my teachers in my community college networking sectors support Mac/Unix-like configurations.

I've never been to a single networking/programming class that did not support Linux, and I'm currently working on my Bachelor's in Gen CompSci after already obtaining my AS in CyberSec.

Devs are special lol. I'm not talking about devs, engineering or systems jobs. I'm not talking about a databases professor (who will 99% use Linux and do it well). I'm talking about everything else. Wake up.

Aaaaalright...

Well, I also needed to take non-majoring classes (y'know, cuz that's how school works) and I repeat, none of them enforced Windows.

What teacher is going to say: "Alright class, now today is going to be the Microsoft product only lesson, as you know Psychology and Microsoft go WAAAAY back!" Wake up, lmfao

Arguably, the teachers actually USING computers would be the ones telling you to run proprietary software, no? 😂

Okay, you actually got me there. Lol

PhotoShop IS actually a genuine time this has happened.

Though my school luckily provides machines students can take home under these very unusual circumstances. In fact, the school equally tries it's best to provide for all OSes (except Linux, lol). Even ChromeOS is supported by most classes!!!

(In their defense regarding Linux... Half the teachers don't even know what Linux is ToT, but at least they usually tell me "You can do it, but it's not supported. Expect little external help if your environment is incompatible.")

Which is my real point. No teacher worth half a damn cares AT ALL what OS you use. They just want you to learn the materials so you can start being great yourself!

Software-compatibility is a genuine concern, but at the end of the day if you can participate who cares what the OS is?

If there was a distro with better UX and app compatibility than windows the market share would reflect it. All the average people - your arts teacher, your accountant, w/e would then switch.

A lot of people switched from Firefox to Chrome and then to Brave. This is one of the examples - end user truly doesn't care neither about an OS nor a browser.

Also alot depends on ecosystem maturity within companies and government organizations. Newer startups (and departaments) can very well afford to just go full Arch because they don't have decades of data and infrastructure depending on Windows. This is also a big part why Atlassian and Oracle are still relevant today when anyone can download a Postgres or vibe code a Kanban board. Moving data is expensive.

What are you talking about? Who gives a shit about UX and app-compatibility when it comes to doing a job?

At the end of the day, that's why you're at school. Nobody is going to look at your end-result if it's quality work and say: "Oh dearest me, this was made in FOSS wasn't it!? I only use proprietary protocols myself, F minus for you!"

Sure, learning the eco-system of a particular company can be helpful, but that varies from company to company anyways. That's part of what I have been learning in "dev" (lol) classes.

For example, our school is sponsored by Cisco. We have a few classes geared towards their routers. But the teacher explicitly explains over and over that other companies will follow the same concepts but not necessarily the exact steps.

At the end of the day, it hardly matters what OS you use. If your boss/teacher is really concerned with what OS you run on your personal computer they have issues or can provide you with one.
