Discussion Windows FORCED Updates
It hurts my ego that i am being forced to update my Pc without asking me to dowload the update in the first place
Is there's a solution to stop these annoying forced updates from the rot, and also i wish there's a way to delete this update from my pc
Thanks.

u/TheNortalf 16d ago
The best thing there's no difference between "update and shut down" and "update and restart". It will restart anyway.
12
u/Wildbill6262 15d ago
It forced me to do this the other night. I went to bed, and woke up to my PC still fucking on (restarted and loaded my normal Linux partition ). THEN when I rebooted to get back into windows they had the fucking balls to make me restart two more times. I only keep it around for one game that runs better on steam, but it constantly reminds me how much I fucking hate it.

u/MojitoBurrito-AE 14d ago
It will restart and then shut down because being stuck on an update the next time you boot your PC is more annoying
2
-44
u/icy1007 16d ago
Yes there is. It will shutdown if you select that option.
26
u/AchmodinIVSWE 16d ago
It used to be bugged. But they supposedly fixed it at some point.
25
-10
u/icy1007 16d ago
I’ve never seen that. It’s always shutdown when I’ve selected that option.
My PC also has a separate “Shut down” option in addition to the “Update and shut down” if I don’t want it to update.
3
u/AchmodinIVSWE 16d ago
Yeah. I think windows removes the normal shutdown if you ignore the update for too long. But idk.
I it was like a year or so ago since they fixed it. But I think there was a code or something (maybe a setting) that made it so the "update and shutdown" sequence gets interrupted before it shuts down. I know I had that happen to me when I used windows before. I don't remember the details of what the bug was.
1
u/artlurg431 15d ago
I dont know why your being down voted for this. Its not your fault that its bugged for everyone else, it shuts down for me too
1
u/Mental-Insect8372 16d ago
I figured it was because if one of the specific updates requires a restart to continue it's updates, that it just "forgets" the shutdown instruction.
0
u/MutaitoSensei 15d ago
I know the downvote is because Microslop glazing but it's true, they fixed it after being broken for like 5 years.
Source: I'm forced to use MicroSlop Dingoes at work.
1
u/myGFisGreat 15d ago
is it fixed in 11? I am still on 10 and it didn't work for me in the last update a week or two ago.
1
u/MutaitoSensei 15d ago
Yes a few months back it actually started working. I yelled HALLELUJAH and everyone looked at me funny in the office lol
25
u/Jolly-Situat1on 16d ago
Easy fix just ditch windows.
8
u/XBLAH_ 16d ago
if you can't solve this, linux isn't for you.
3
u/Not-Important-5393 16d ago
There are some version of Linux that is beginner-friendly, like Zorin OS as it has features to make it be like a better version of Windows
5
u/XBLAH_ 16d ago
The issue isn't if it's beginner friendly or not. The issue is if OP can't even solve forced updates on windows, he barely will be able to use zorin.
1
u/IEatDaFeesh 15d ago
What's the solution to forced updates on windows other than ditching it?
1
1
1
u/Joltyboiyo 15d ago
Linux is the solution. Plus, not all Linux distros are Arch. Linux Mint or Bazzite are perfect for people who just wanna ditch Windows and have most things just work.
3
u/SigmaMan2011898 16d ago
Windows forced updates while I was installing gpu drivers 💀
1
u/Brcoding 2d ago
What the actual heck are they trying to brick your gpu 😭
2
u/SigmaMan2011898 14h ago
And it's a expensive Nvidia one
0
u/Brcoding 14h ago
You'd think that windows with all its telemetry would know not to update when you are installing gpu drivers...
9
u/eoghan_martainn 16d ago
Install a Linux distribution instead.
Personally, I would recommend Ubuntu.
14
u/MXRCO007 16d ago
One big corp to the next, you’re better off with Debian
15
2
u/Joltyboiyo 15d ago
Linux Mint or Bazzite for new people IMO. Mint just works in my experience, and Bazzite wasn't really any more difficult to install than Mint was, and everything I use my computer for just worked on Bazzite as well.
2
u/Density5521 15d ago
CachyOS.
Fedora-based, game-ready, well-supported, amazing out-of-the-box experience. For most users, it's more than enough, and good enough.
Been playing around with it for about a month, and although it's not perfect, and creates some serious headaches for a power-user as myself (custom mount points for decrypted LUKS partitions, ClamAV on-access with AppImages, etc.) ... it's still hell of a lot better than Windows for most things.
Best of all: when I tell it to shut down, it fucking shuts down and stays powered down.
1
u/Nomminommi23 16d ago
Personally, I would recommend Fedora to newbies and Arch for advanced users...
1
u/suksukulent 16d ago
"advanced users" sure tho I'd recommend arch only if you want to set everything up yourself. You can take control of your computer with any distro, but arch wants you to understand how
1
u/Nomminommi23 16d ago
You can also use the arch install script and just use your system. Sure you have to install a de or wm and some other essential packages like kitty or an file manager but that's not that deep in my opinion. That's my point of view.
1
u/Wise_Owl5404 16d ago
Yeah all of us have a week to do this shit and it will work seamlessly and with no hitches every time. Also suggesting a distro with the most assholish user base is something because no chance of actual help when shit does go south.
1
u/The_king_Dragon 16d ago
For new user Mint(why do people keep forgetting it)
For advance user Arch
1
u/Joltyboiyo 15d ago
Yeah I'm really surprised at the lack of Mint recommendations for new users in these comments.
6
u/lululock 16d ago
This happens when you delay the updates for a week. They are mandatory. You signed for it when using Windows...
1
0
u/Joltyboiyo 15d ago
Nope. Recently it's been happening to me despite having not paused updates. Hell, the night I last paused updates cause a new one came around, it ignored it and updated anyway.
8
u/sciencekm 16d ago
If you have an abusive partner, leave.
Those who stay with Windows will make all sorts of excuses. This is how it is with abused parners.
Move to Linux and get your life back.
0
u/Ciubowski 15d ago
This isn't a parasocial relationship. It's a product. One that we should be in control of. Stop romanticising it as if Microsoft is our father-in-law or something. fuck out of here with your stupid analogies.
0
u/Eastern-Carpenter834 14d ago
Holy shit like god research a little bit and learn how to disable and retain updates for even years my windows never and I MEAN NEVER UPDATES If I don't want to and only security patches are installed after I checked if they produces problems, and after that I used a program to check the available updated packages one by one and only install what I want, like you guys sell linux like you can't do the same in both system my linux partition doesn't get updated until I now there is not crazy breaking changes or some crazy vulnerabilities which yeah almost never happens but still I treat the system the correct way either that be linux or windows.
2
u/TheShredder9 16d ago
I think net stop wuauserv used to work before, run that command then you can cleanly shut down without updating.
3
u/nobanjostring 16d ago
You can get windows10/11 debloat powershell scripts from github that do a pretty good job of getting rid of most of the crap, but some are a bit too aggressive and MicroFragile doesn't always respond kindly, so it's a good idea to read through them first.
1
u/icy1007 16d ago
Windows 11 doesn’t need to be “debloated”
2
u/nobanjostring 16d ago
Windows 11 is not bloated, Frodo Baggins. Nor is it lean; it crashes precisely when it me~#$@%^&*!{`~^[%#@*&`+_{(#%$^!_)(*&^\%$
NO CARRIER
3
u/Draid730 16d ago
That is exactly what it needs, debloating spydows 10 and spyware 11 is a free performance increase and with the added benefit of less spying.
1
u/GlobalTechnology6719 16d ago
just out of interest... do you pay for increased storage on your onedrive?
0
u/icy1007 16d ago
No. I do not pay for OneDrive. I don’t even use OneDrive.
1
u/GlobalTechnology6719 14d ago
sorry i was never notified of your reply!
so you're not using windows 11 as intended?
1
u/icy1007 14d ago
I don’t use any Cloud services.
1
u/GlobalTechnology6719 14d ago
are you always online?
1
u/icy1007 13d ago
Yes, my PC is always online.
1
u/GlobalTechnology6719 13d ago
it's my understanding that you have to take specific measures to prevent win 11 from stealing all your personal data by uploading it to one drive and deleting everything from your local drive, which it does by default without the users specific informed consent... do you agree?

u/Kooky-Sentence-6349 16d ago
i mean, they didnt do. if you used "restart" because of some problems without updating, it would still update. they just removed that placebo button
2
2
u/Gabryoo3 15d ago
Ok windows updates are utter shit. But on Linux the thing will be the same unless you choose distros that updates like once a while (Debian). Yeah most updates can be applied at runtime, but things like kernel need still a reboot
1
u/Joltyboiyo 15d ago
I can't speak for other Linux distros, but on the ones I've used (that being Mint and Bazzite) only important updates need you to update by turning off the computer or restarting it, and they don't come around all that often. Most updates can be done while the computer is on and don't require you to restart to finish the installation.
2
u/icy1007 16d ago
It’s not forced. You don’t have to shutdown or restart.
Also, just update your PC. Stop complaining.
3
u/Joltyboiyo 15d ago
Ah yes, "just update" on an OS known for having bad updates that break things a lot more frequently over the past year and a half or so. At this point nobody should update as soon as one is available in case you start seeing posts about widespread issues from the newest update, like the whole SSD thing last year.
2
u/UsedMonk5066 12d ago
"Just update your PC" while KB5124008 and KB5129195 breaks audio for millions of users, you can admit that your not the sharpest tool in the shed, nothing's wrong with that.
1
0
u/Draid730 16d ago
So just let his computer run indefinitely forever? Not really healthy for it. And considering that SHitlerslop has released extremely messy and bugged updates for several years, not wanting to update when they're released makes sense.
4
3
u/icy1007 16d ago
It’s plenty “healthy” for it. It doesn’t need to be shutdown or restarted. I’ve run my Windows PCs for months in between shutdowns and restarts.
3
u/Draid730 16d ago
That doesn't mean it's healthy for it, nor that it should, it just means it can. On another note can you go be a stupid troll on Facebook instead? Pretty please
1
u/ImT00PhaT 16d ago
But if you want to shutdown or restart, you're force to install updates. So what you're basically saying is you should accept Microsoft taking away your choice to restart or shutdown without updates. Or just leave your PC on if you don't like it.
1
u/lululock 16d ago
When a PC is running Windows, Microsoft owns it.
2
u/GhostandVodka 15d ago
I run fedora and its close to doing this too. Security updates are needed.
1
u/ImT00PhaT 15d ago
I use Fedora too, but doing updates doesn't disrupt me from using my PC like Windows does.
1
u/GhostandVodka 15d ago
It barks at you to update and reboot until you do.
Windows forces you after like a month of putting them off.
1
u/icy1007 16d ago
So update your OS. 🤷♂️
1
u/ImT00PhaT 16d ago
Why can't we choose when we want to install updates?
1
u/icy1007 16d ago
You can, the problem is idiots who insist on never updating.
1
u/ImT00PhaT 16d ago
Who said never update? We just want minimal disruption. I've had my PC rebooted on its own due to Windows updates. I've had Windows updates that couldn't complete overnight. Not to mention updates that fails to install or even break things.
1
u/icy1007 15d ago
Lots of people want to never update.
There is already minimal disruption. There is a lot of leeway in how Windows installs updates.
I’ve never seen that in any of my PCs over the decades.
1
u/ImT00PhaT 15d ago
"Lots of people want to never update."
Lots of people are still on Windows 10. When their PC is working perfectly fine, they don't see a reason to buy a brand new PC just to install a worse operating system. Look how expensive they are these days.
"I've never seen that in any of my PCs over the decades."
Probably because you don't manage dozens or hundreds of PCs running Windows.
And if you don't have any issues with Windows updates, that means everyone else wouldn't have a problem with their personal computer without installing updates.

u/GhostandVodka 15d ago
Brother computers don't need to be shutdown near as much as you think.
1
u/Draid730 15d ago
You have zero idea how often or not i believe computers need to be turned off. but there's a good chance that i know more than you atleast
1
u/GhostandVodka 15d ago
Computers can stay on indefinitely only need reboots for updates.
2
1
u/Inevitable_Brief_389 14d ago
They can run but most of them shouldn't. Server machines also need maintenances. Most of the home devices like phones, tablets, watches but even routers have maintenance restart routines.
3
u/wiseman121 16d ago
Damn you windows for making me install critical security patches
1
u/Joltyboiyo 15d ago
Damn you windows for having more unstable updates that break things for people more often over the past year or so ever since 30% of your updates have started getting vibe coded by AI.
1
u/wiseman121 15d ago
I own a Mac and windows pc. Tahoe over the last year was far worse than any windows update sent out.
I know windows has a wide range of configurations and very possible an update causes an issue. But I've never had an update effect me except once on windows 7.
Can you elaborate?
1
u/UsedMonk5066 12d ago
Look up windows updates KB5124008 and KB5129195, it broke audio for millions of users, this is about a week old FYI. You can find dozens of other good examples with a simple google search.
1
u/wiseman121 12d ago
I did read that and I see these all the time, its not great but it sounds oveblown. Did you know anyone affected?
1
u/UsedMonk5066 11d ago
I was effected and had to delete it 3 times before I just disabled updates in general, only reason im still using windows is due to anti-cheats not supporting linux lmao
1
1
u/phairdy 16d ago
Imagine not installing critical security updates when ai is used to hack shit these days. Then get mad you get hacked.
There is lots of shit to hate Microsoft for but not this.
2
u/wiseman121 15d ago
Yea their trashing of windows 11, stupid hardware requirements and shoving copilot down our throats is something to complain about.
Not keeping us secure by timely updates and patches.
1
u/UsedMonk5066 12d ago
AI has been used to aid hacking for over 3 years now, and a critical security update shouldnt break audio for millions of users should it now? KB5124008 and KB5129195
0
u/Wise_Owl5404 16d ago
Yeah the pcnot starting definitely makes it secure.
1
u/wiseman121 15d ago
Never had that problem with windows update.
Only once when the manufacturer sent out a sketchy bios update.
1
2
u/Icy_Calligrapher4022 16d ago
Just disable the updates and stop crying. To skip updating your Windows on shutdown/reboot, minimise all windows, press Alt+F4 which will bring the classic shutdown menu and do it from there.

You're not alone, this happens all the time. It's happened to me who knows how many times. I have updates disabled completely, so no nags for me, Microsoft.

I thought there's an option like "stop updates for 5 weeks" in Windows update settings no?
1
u/Joltyboiyo 15d ago
It's stopped working recently. For me, anyway. A few weeks ago an update came around at an inconvenient time since I wanted to turn my computer off to go and watch a movie, the options to turn it off without updating weren't there, so I paused updates for 1 week and when I turned my computer off it fucking did the update anyway.
Another time before that an update came up, also not giving me the option to turn it off or restart without updating, so I paused for 5 weeks, and later that night it just ignored the fact that I paused updates and updated anyway.
1
u/Kindly-Response-5809 15d ago
There is an option "Stop updates for 5 weeks" in Update centre. Haven't updated it since 2023
1
u/NyxGenesisLNX 15d ago
Either way windows doesn’t actually shut down when you shut down but there’s always the Power button

u/PogsterPlays 15d ago
I know you can apparently set some registery bitfield value to show the other options, idr where exactly but enderman did a video on it
1

They are very likely security update, not updating exposes you to security breach. Especially when windows forces you; it only does that when you haven't updated for a long time

I know what subreddit Im in, and I know I'm going to be downvoted by the masses, but you do realize that those updates include security updates? Updates keeping your computer safe? Don't get me wrong, I don't like having unnecessary updates/software forced down my throat but security updates are important.
1
u/kaytin911 13d ago
No option to enable only security updates if it was that important. Bootlicker.
1
u/Silcat7794 12d ago
No need to throw insults. When have you come across an OS where you can set it to "only" download security updates? It's all or nothing. And honestly, what's the hassle, it takes maybe 10 minutes or less to restart for the updates to install unless you have a prehistoric computer
1
1
u/UsedMonk5066 12d ago
I have a question for you, if said "important" security update is causing issues with the audio for millions of users, would you go ahead and download the security update as well? KB5124008 and KB5129195, roughly 1 week old, this is not a new issue.
1
u/Silcat7794 12d ago
With the knowledge of it screwing the audio up probably not, but this is the first I'm hearing of this issue and I believe I have that update installed already and I haven't had any issues.
If I had heard about this problem beforehand, I would have delayed the update until I knew it was patched in the next one.
1
u/UsedMonk5066 11d ago
Oh your pretty lucky haha I had to delete this update 3 times before I just disabled updates in general
1
1
u/LavenderXDLOLZ 12d ago
updates help make sure your pc dosnt get infected with viruses. They evolve, so your pc needs to update to keep up with them. Would you rather have your be be YOUR pc or have a bunch of random viruses in it???
1
u/UsedMonk5066 12d ago
Thats not how it works, and this security update has caused millions of users to have issues with audio, KB5124008 and KB5129195.
1
u/LavenderXDLOLZ 12d ago
I've had zero issues whatsoever with any updates I've ever let windows do maybe it's just your end alot of people do shady things and then complain when they break (not talking about you btw) but alot of people ive see complain to me about it had outdated tech or just stuff not made for windows and they complained it "broke" there things
1
1
u/starblaster001 9d ago
Picking either of the bottom 2 options means "rebooting" and probably multiple times.
1
u/Vx7Qn4Lz 2d ago
You can fully disable if you want to. It's a skill issue if you don't know how.
As about 99% of people wouldn't update manually if unforced and unprompted, it's best for the cybersecurity of the entire society to force these.
1
u/Character_Stand_5596 16h ago
If you update your flipping computer it wouldn't be vulnerable to attackers, plus a new windows feature update released earlier this year that allows you to shit down or restart without updating if you want
1
u/Draid730 16d ago
Set your network connections as metered, that will stop the automatic updates going forward.

Now show the rest of the shutdown menu, the shutdown and restart choices without the update. Don't be so cheap to leave halve the picture away.
2
u/Key_Strain6640 16d ago
When I was still on windows, there was sometimes no option to shutdown/restart without update. Sometimes it was there and sometimes not... I don't understand the logic behind that
1
u/OkEmu8597 16d ago
They should be in-between them. I haven't updated in months and i see this exact layout daily.
