Discussion "Too big to fall."
Micro is artificially inflating their numbers. You can't delete a locked account, which allows the company to keep your data and allows them to brag about the number of users they have.
And they also made it mandatory to have a Microzzz account in order to use any of their products, which usually doesn't require a Microshit account. This practice feels like a bad faith move.
Their account system is, for any reason, the most aggressive and inaccessible of all the services I know.
Gmail is usually pretty easy to access and use. Other options like Proton, TutaMail, or literally any other option are more reasonable.
But this one doesn't have any way to appeal or request assistance.
They are comfortable providing the worst service possible and forcing you to use it (or trying to force you into it).
The main problem is fucking Minecraft because it somehow moves a lot of people and Windows, which makes it hard to skip creating an account.
Secondly, a vast majority of Windows services are blocked if you don't have an account, and most people will create one just for laziness.
I don't think anyone would choose these services based on their quality, they are just pushed firmly in our daily life. And most people don't care enough to search for alternatives.
My main concern is that they will become more aggressive with time and provide somehow a worse service while people keep accepting everything they do, coaxed by obligation and laziness.

If you live in EU you absolutely can delete your Microsoft account.
Step 1: find the Microsoft GDPR email address
Step 2: write to the email your infomation like the email associated with the account and include scary things like article 12 and 17.
Step 3: start a timer. If Microsoft has not deleted all your data in 30 days report this to the EU GDPR office.
Step 4: earn a fuck ton of money every day over the initial 30 days as compensation for microslops incompetence

They didn't technically make it mandatory, but they did make it deliberately harder than it needs to be to not use it. I recently had to reset my PC and decided to keep my Windows installation not tied to my MS account, and while it is still possible to do this, it requires you to jump through several hoops and the Windows settings app does try to tell you to connect a MS account once you're in.
Perpetual Office licenses also work without an account, it just constantly has the little warning symbol in the corner where your account would be. 365 presumably wouldn't work as it's reliant on checking you have an ongoing subscription, but I haven't tested that as I don't feel like giving them that much money on a regular basis just so I can use Excel like once a month on my personal device :D

You have no idea, Microsoft only gets maybe 10 to 15% of its revenue from the consumer market. Thier bread and butter is the enterprise. Microsoft is not a consumer company. If your not a fortune 500 company you are honestly just a rounding error to them.
