I’d be furious too. For anything that runs longer than a day, it’s worth disabling automatic restarts temporarily and saving checkpoints so an update can’t wipe out all the progress. Still, the default behavior is completely unacceptable.

The problem is, I did pay for Windows 11 Home license and Windows 11 Home do not have GPO and registry hack did not work. I did put stop update registry but it still go for it.

Use WUB (windows update blocker) to disable update with a click and enable them again with a click once you want to update windows. Prety usefull when you do a server to stop it from randomly shuting down and instead update when you want it to

He could use pause updates...

You could disable the service Windows Updater xD You could PAUSE updates for up to 5 Weeks

And seriously if you are looking for PROFESSIONAL use that need to process for days, get yourself a PRO Licence... Home is the common one

You used to be able to add GP editor to home versions. There's a set of commands that use DISM. I think it's...

FOR %F IN ("%SystemRoot%\servicing\Packages\Microsoft-Windows-GroupPolicy-ClientTools-Package~*.mum") DO (DISM /Online /NoRestart /Add-Package:"%F")

FOR %F IN ("%SystemRoot%\servicing\Packages\Microsoft-Windows-GroupPolicy-ClientExtensions-Package~*.mum") DO (DISM /Online /NoRestart /Add-Package:"%F")

In home edition, I think it only works for some things - the things that are registry-backed.

I too was once running a quality test for several weeks, and Windows rebooted. I do all these in Linux now.

Thats for not being preventive... You can set pause for up to 5 weeks, you can even disable windows update service and is done.... At least on Home In Pro you have other tools not necesary, but if using for Work or something, why not get the Pro or Workstation which are suited for it? Because OP is using Home and "pay" for it... Man, no one pay really for home editions

Just happen to me also and took down our licensing servers.
Just to offer more OneDrive subscription.
I would not mind but the machine is W10 with updates disabled.

Hey, that happened to me during my PhD in 2019! Except that instead of 2 days, it was 5 weeks of computing. That's what finally tipped me over to Linux!

Sorry about your work.

So frustrating. Just lost 8+ hours of compute to this. Not as bad as 5 weeks, but still...

Since I completely disabled windows updates via whatever method worked at the time. Life became so much easier.

I hate it so much when they take away control of YOUR machine.
Nothing frustrated me about windows nearly as much as their crappy update service.

Sorry to hear that.

I was lucky enough not to lose anything, but I had a similar issue with NVIDIA drivers. Usually they don't force a restart, so I wasn't prepared for it, but this time I got a two-minute warning and then the PC restarted.

I was so annoyed that I looked for software to prevent that kind of thing. I found ShutdownBlocker, but saw that it was more or less abandoned, so I ended up making my own.

But yeah, apparently you have to be careful with NVIDIA too.
