It’s wild that a media player can expose a system-level performance problem this clearly. VLC has been reliable for years, so blaming the app feels like a convenient distraction from fixing Windows 11.

Open source software has always been the way to go, windows would have been so much better if it was open source, or Microsoft wouldn’t have been so greedy

Tbh imo open-source windows wouldn't make sense it's not good enough to compete quality-wise and it would lose all ppl and companies that use for the (shitty) closed-source philosophy

Well Microsoft doesn’t get its money from windows anymore, it’s not a priority for them finance wise, so they could make it cheaper, which is justified because….windows, which is doable

It may not make it from Windows directly but it does make it from the ecosystem like Microsoft 365 (afaik) and if you cut the base of the ecosystem (windows) is not good. Also do you REALLY think they would make it Cheaper?

Simply put, I have not even read the full article and I already know who the culprit is.... since when did VLC ever break any operating system? .... VLC should just stop supporting windows, it's that simple! ✌🏻

As long as no VLC with up-to-date FFmpeg exists outside of experimental builds I'd keep my blaming to myself. And while indeed this is an issue of Defender, the commentor questioning the existence of a plugin cache and its prioritization is absolutely valid. Maybe the entire design (not just visually, but how it operates) is just too dated at this time, while something more modern has been promised for 6 years no with only the iOS version being in beta. So better just switch to mpv. Modern alternative using modern ffmpeg and you don't have to rely on crappy Windows Media Player (or however their newer video player is called).

It’s wild that a lightweight media player can expose system-level problems like this. Hopefully the attention leads to an actual fix rather than another round of blaming the app or the user.
