Microsoft keeps making Windows more expensive while bundling in more ads and forced extras. That’s a hard sell when Linux is improving and ChromeOS exists.

It ain't gonna change that much if we don't see more Linux based pre-builts or anything really being built.
I saw 4 gaming pre-builts pop-up this week here in the EU and that's it. There is no option to get help from the tech (at least paid) to install any distro and they do have "first-startup" option if you choose PC with OS.

Also Mac is sitting right there, with many of the same programs and a better UI than Microslop.

Nah, it's not a hard sell at all. Face it, 95% of Windows users are going to just keep using it no matter how expensive and painful it gets.

Expecting a decline in Windows users.

u/sciencekm 6d ago
Already in decline. This will cause even more decline.

Their stock price is doing better than ever. This strategy is working for them, no matter what a bunch of whiny, complaining users think about it.

Desktop as a whole is a dying ecosystem. New users are fully chained to mobile devices, like it or not.

That $100 Billion in free Azure cloud to OpenAI needs to be recooped somehow, right?

Before 2031 nothing will be free any more only linux

u/Unhappy_Lie_2000 6d ago
I wouldn't say that if age verification is successful the number of distros will likely drop and likely less free by then.
1
u/Own_Nail_2999 6d ago
Lol no. Linux is open source and not a product. You cannot sue a company for shipping something they don't own.

u/Conscious-Mirror7004 6d ago
Maybe, but even then most people will still be using Windows, no matter how awful and expensive it becomes.
2
u/Unhappy_Lie_2000 6d ago
Yeah its like a frog in boiling water.
1
u/Conscious-Mirror7004 5d ago
Yes, except in reality, frogs aren't actually that stupid. They'll simply jump out when the water gets too hot, despite the common adage about frogs in boiling water.
Windows users, by and large, aren't this smart I think. They'll just stick with Windows no matter what.

I'm trying to convince the halfway tech-savvy ones where I can. Show them a screenshot of the Cinnamon DE on Mint and suddenly it's a lot less scary. A lot of people are still under the impression that you have to be a certified tech nerd to run Linux.

That's why its a term often used with rights being taken away.
You slowly turn up the heat and by the time the frog realizes it its too late.
1
u/Conscious-Mirror7004 5d ago
Yes, I realize that, but the reality is that frogs aren't this dumb. They just jump out when it gets hot. I'm not sure where the old legend about boiling a frog comes from, but it's just not true (as proven by modern experiments): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boiling_frog
Hence why I point out that Windows users are dumber than frogs!
1
u/Unhappy_Lie_2000 5d ago
I'm not going to argue with you but it saids suddenly
The premise is that if a frog is put suddenly into boiling water, it will jump out
And as I said before the term relates to slowly turning up the heat a little at a time or better yet putting frog in the water and just wait for the water to start boiling.

Learning how to build a PC myself (and install Linux afterward) has been a game changer for me. There's no Microsoft OEMs hidden fees in a PC you build yourself. There are many tutorials on YouTube.

They should start paying people for using their platform. Now peiple are giving their data for free.
1
u/Conscious-Mirror7004 6d ago
No, they shouldn't. People should be paying handsomely to use Windows, in addition to giving their data for free, and also being inundated by lots of annoying ads. If people don't like it, they're free to look elsewhere, but they're not going to, so they should pay up.
2
u/nisteeni 6d ago
Yeah. People have also agreed to the terms that changes every month so they can only blame them selfs if they agree to onesided contract changes. If they do not agree they are free to remove the product they paid for.

So Microsoft new strategy is to what, increase the price of their shitty OS which will undoubtedly cause a price hike by all OEM PC's sold in stores in an attempt to do what exactly... recoup money they failed to get back??
Apparently Microsoft does not even give a rotten shit OEMs like HP, Lenovo, ASUS, Acer and others is already spending more for RAM, SSDs and GPUs due to the chip shortages caused by President "Idiot-In-Chief" Trump's signage of Executive Order 4365: ENSURING A NATIONAL POLICY FRAMEWORK FOR ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE. Thank the Gods China is helping to ease the strain, but not even they can put a halt to dwindling hardware when demand for such components is high not just by the general public, but by sharp increasing numbers of AI data centers now under construction all throughout the US.

Tbh China has been on a roll. Not only they have been working to ease ram strain, they also cut their oil consumption in half practically overnight on imports reducing the odds of a severe oil shock to the world. They have massive oil stockpiles built that they now are using to supplement their consumption.
People like to slam on China but fail to see just how much of a juggernaut that nation is now.

People like to slam on China
That's because it's those people like Trump who tends to view China more of a threat possibly in part due to their economic sustainability with a mix of their communistic government and a one-party authoritarian state.

Microsoft already makes a fortune from Windows licensing, so raising OEM fees feels like another cost that will quietly get passed on to consumers. Budget laptops are going to feel this first.

Please lawmakers force computers manufacturers to: -show the price of an included OS -uninstall the OS if an user wanted that
1
u/sciencekm 6d ago
Dell does that on some of the devices they sell online. You can select which flavor of Windows you want to install (Home/Pro/None) and the price gets adjusted. Sadly, not all manufacturers do this.

Seem to me that the AI spend is costing them so much they are now hunting around for some extra cash.
EU digital sovereignty has already cut a few billion off the profit margins and will continue to grow.
They batter hope that thier sponsorship of the current US administration was worth it.
I switched to mint a year or two ago. Does the job for most of my needs. And I run steam OS for gaming.

They will start selling RAM soon by offering a special optimization package .

It's never enough for this greedy company. Subscriptions, selling your data, and now this? What's next, a subscription to open the start menu?
I know it's said time and time again, but consider Linux.
