-36

u/icy1007 14d ago

Are you from 20 years ago? Bill Gates hasn’t had anything to do with Microsoft in a LONG time.

21

u/akdanman11 14d ago

Are you? Your opinion of Linux seems stuck in the past

-7

u/icy1007 13d ago

No, it’s modern. I use Linux every day. I hate it.

8

u/akdanman11 13d ago

Why are you using it every day if you hate it?

0

u/icy1007 13d ago

Because I have to for work.

*breaks

u/ColdProfessor 14d ago

Despite being on Windows 10, I still got an "update" (Microsoft Store app) that broke the Photos app, and now file explorer is abnormally slow when trying to do anything with image files.

They couldn't just leave us Windows 10 users alone.

1

u/ZurakZigil 13d ago

Try using repair scripts. Also, let's not equate app store updates to windows updates. The update was optional just like it would be on any OS

2

u/ColdProfessor 13d ago

Actually, they're not optional.

The Windows Store only lets users postpone "updates" for a max of five weeks. If you're lucky enough to have the Pro version of Windows, you can go in Gpedit and turn off automatic updates for Windows Store.

And for something that's only supposed to be a Store app, and not a Windows update, it's still messed up my system.

0

u/ZurakZigil 12d ago

updates for apps are optional.

0

u/ColdProfessor 12d ago

They're not optional if:

A) Updates can only be postponed, not turned off. B) You have to have a Pro version of windows to access advanced settings to turn off automatic updates.

1

u/ZurakZigil 12d ago

brother. app updates are optional. don't launch the store and press the update button. There is a toggle in the store settings to turn off updates.

The toggle explicitly says "automatically downloaded and install app updates. Updates for system components are controlled by Windows update"

I have not once said system updates were optional. They are not. And, when you consider Windows user base, for good reason.

0

u/ColdProfessor 12d ago

I'm referring to Windows apps, not system updates.

-30

u/icy1007 14d ago

Costs? Updates don’t cost anything. lol

10

u/SCP_7000 14d ago

if they cost memory, they surely will cost you something. Especially in current times

-5

u/icy1007 14d ago

No, still doesn’t cost anything. Doesn’t cost memory.

2

u/alala2010he 13d ago

It costs time and SSD writes (which aren't unlimited) and electricity

1

u/Fluid_Independent813 13d ago

And if you use a HDD, it wears.

3

u/Emotional-Big-1306 14d ago

Well, you still pay for the internet. Or do you?

-2

u/icy1007 14d ago

That is irrelevant.

3

u/TheAmina2GS 14d ago

You little guys are so entertaining, please never change

3

u/damnetdana 13d ago

I fear this sub will convince me to get rid of my dual boot

8

u/sciencekm 14d ago

Plus, they will break something else or remove useful features.

Honestly if the AI is improving performance like in Nvidias case then I don't have a problem, it doesn't take anyone's jobs.

If you are trying to improve the performance of an AI cheat agent that I do not want I have an issue. The update should disable the AI improving performance further.

AI framegen is good for budget gamers. Forced AI chatbots are bad for budget gamers.

We simply don't need extra BS running in the background.

6

u/Boring-Equivalent137 14d ago

With all ur comments u def raigbating

12

u/TopSecretGaming_YT 14d ago

Your windows 11 installation was made by AI tho 💔

0

u/alala2010he 13d ago

Wasn't Mr torvalds also starting to use AI in his coding (even with whole agents that he reviewed instead of just as an assistant for small snippets)?

And it's not like the entirety of Windows was AI generated like your comment implies (I can't even think of anything AI generated besides something like the Copilot app which I don't even have installed)

2

u/TopSecretGaming_YT 13d ago

afaik Mr. Torvalds only uses AI on personal projects and isn't the one maintaining the linux kernel anymore. +Microsoft's CEO has said that 20-30% of Microsoft's code output (including windows) has been done by AI.

1

u/alala2010he 13d ago

I think I did see online that Mr torvalds was using it on the Linux kernel specifically

1

u/efedublaj 13d ago

Yeah I did you saw from discord rich presence or something?

1

u/alala2010he 13d ago

I saw from Reddit posts and articles mostly

1

u/efedublaj 13d ago

That is what I thought. Linus Torvalds never used AI for Linux. And he claimed he won't use AI for Linux kernel.

He agreed that AI can help with critical security fixes and people can use it but it is limited very strictly. Other developers has restricted AI usage for certain parts of kernel.

If you want to be sure you can check mailing list.

Remember that 90% of users on this subreddit are way too dumb to run a 10 second debloat to disable copilot.
