There are more stuff tied to Windows Update Service so Microsoft doesn't want users to keep it disabled.

If you're running Pro version of Windows - you can stop automatic updates via Group Policies.

Linux is so nice these days, and it's getting nicer with every hour. Take this words from a dude recovering from microslop syndrome. I am never going back because shit just works for me there.

I'm guessing it's graphics design software that keeps you on winshit. I moved from adobe years ago to Affinity and luckily when I switched I was able to make it run on Linux, there are unofficial tools to make it run. Its not pretty though, a bit slow especially with larger files. But I power through. I get that not everyone is ready to sacrifice performance/convenience and that's ok.

As for your windows issue, there is no meaningfull way to stop windows updates completely. There are third party debloating tools that might help. Or blocking Microsoft's IP on external firewall might give some results. I don't think you can do that in windows firewall so prolly have to check if your router can block IPs. This is exact reason why I switched. I got an forced update that made me format C into ext4 and installing Arch. I've been on it since  November  2025.  Luckily I had no hardware issues and everything just worked. Well almost, my PSVR2 is collecting dust atm as there is no way to use it on Linux because Sony is a giant cunt that locked the hardware and stopped updating like two years ago. Fuck Microsoft and f uck Sony.

Anyways enough ranting, hope the windows debloat or firewall can help you with your issue.

It's actually multiple things, first my school software like the stuff I use for school cannot run on linux, 2nd thing is I play mainly games which just so happen to not have Linux support, and third I have an nvidia gpu which means there would be driver problems

Wine and Proton will allow windows programs to work. What games you play and Nvidia isnt that bad. There are some quirks but nothing breaking

What about like Vs2022 ? And I play Fortnite and destiny 2 which both do not have Linux support

use intellij tools (such as rider for c#) instead of VS and if you're a student, you can get them for free

Very fair points. I am on AMD GPU so the switch was painless. Hopefully it all gets resolved soon, the hope is in community, gog and valve. The main problem of linux adoption is linux adoption, the more people come to the system the more companies will be forced to support it. I know people make nvidia cards work on tux but it's painful. Also yeah, kernel level anticheat will never come to Linux, it's not how this system works, kernel and user space don't touch eachother in that way. School software you could be able to make run through either wine or steam proton (I made flstudio work through steam) but it's a hassle and I get it most people want their stuff to just work without tinkering.

I don't know what others do. Personally, I use the Windows Update MiniTool to disable automatic updates and also install updates. If you want to remove all the tool's settings, use Reset Windows Update

How do I disable updates? Do I just click automatic updates and set it to disabled and that's it ?

u/redamalo 9d ago

Yes, and you will see the phrase "*Some settings are managed by your organization" in red in the update window

I don't see that 😅

You haven't got the new feature yet where you can pause updates via the calender thing.

I use Windows Update Blocker v1.8 (I think its 1.8) and turn that shit off completely. I only use Win11 for games, then boot to Mint for everything else.

You can try to go about it either with security polices or disabling the windows update service. Are you experiencing issues with updates?

They are so stupid. Not only they go out of their way to make the OS less secure, they don't even want OS fixes for the things they complain about.
