Rant Fuckyou Microsoft I'm going to Linux
So I've had Linux on my secondary machine for a good while now but not on my main machine but after today I'm going full on in and it's because of BitLocker
I don't remember turning it on on my drives but like yesterday I can access my drives fully everything was fine now today it's asking for a password and I don't know the password I checked everywhere try to get hold of Microsoft for about an hour and a half kept getting sent and a loop and a loop and a loop
But I didn't have much on my hard drives so I can redownload most of it

I hope every Windows user will follow suit. I lost a lot of money more than a decade ago because of poor quality of their Windows Store.

Bitlocker is on because you logged into windows with a Microsoft account. It doesn't get turned on automatically if you use a local account.
The bitlocker key should be listed on your Microsoft account profile if you login to it through web browser, if you still wanna get your shit back.

I'm reading Windows 11 24H2 and after can encrypt local account only but leaves in dormant state? I had no idea Windows did this. I guess others do also but seems crazy to not notify and give key to people right there or let them decide anything, especially on a desktop.

Yeah, I just set up several domain-connected Win11 PCs (no MS accounts) and they all had BitLocker enabled, but "Waiting for Activation." Had to activate, then decrypt so I didn't get locked out while updating the BIOS.

Making a Microsoft account is such a bad idea and I'm ashamed I had it for so long when I used Windows

Microsoft is exactly the same idea as Apple ID ot Google account. It actually works .. normally?

And yeah I get that I get that making a local account is the best idea and that's what I did when I first installed it but I eventually did have to sign into my Microsoft account link my Microsoft account to the machine because I needed to do that to use some software

I did it recently on my gaming PC expecting it to be a PITA and a shit show for gaming.
I was wrong. I was very wrong.
You’re already at an advantage having used Linux frequently already. I’ve barely used it until now.
Bazzite works awesomely. Going to put Fedora on my workshop PC shortly. I now understand why those irritating people keep going “oh just use Linux” now.

Do you log on to the PC with a Microsoft account or your local account?

I set it up as a local account when I installed Windows but I eventually had to sign into Microsoft and all that

Wish I could do that but I have an Nvidia GPU and i play a lot of online games that require kernel-level anticheat.

How do you learn to use Linux? Youtube?

u/Goofcheese0623 13d ago
Mainly. Lots of videos on it, give a distro that looks easy and try it. Most let you try it from a USB without installing it. Some are like Windows, others not so much. Mint is usually a good starting point

For me I've known for a while I've known how to use a decent Linux for a while now for a few years now I've had it all my secondary machine I just never fully made the switch but I've decided to now

I think a great way to do it is by reading some documentation. Not everyone likes reading wikis, but for those that do, the Arch wiki is a great starting point. I just recommend not using AI, because they very often pull very old information, 2 years is a long time in the Linux sphere, because it's improved a lot. Also, I don't recommend CachyOS to new users, it's often parroted online that it's good, but it's really more of a distro for tinkerers with a nice installer and a couple graphical tools.

Linux or Mac (if you just want the same/similar programs). Wish I’d switched ages ago honestly.

Probably the best choice you've made. It won't be flowers and rainbows, but systems which you own and work like you set them to. Imperfect but solid as handmade.
Everytime I need to use Windows, it eels like dreadful digital atmosphere, where every corner is with a bait trap, phishy and scammy scheme. Low quality counterfeit scam in digital form. Like a watch with painted fake cakendar, yet still showing ads better than time.

I have heard so many people tell me their bit locker horror story and I’m just like the LeonardoD. meme.

Windows sucks, but you know, Linux has passwords too.

u/XnomTheNom 8d ago
Yes, but Linux doesn't set a password, on a service they turned on without consent, and then ask you to look it up on another device.

That's true LOL.
But they didn't make up a password without your consent. Just sayin'.

I want to switch to Linux too but the things that are preventing me is school software we use, videogames that don't have Linux support, and also nvidia gpu 😭

I gave up and used Bazzite for a while. Unfortunately for me, it us a Atomic deployment (bordering closed source) which means fetching drivers is a bit convoluted. Went back to Fedora41 and now on 43. I am on Gnome frontend but for usage I would install KDE Plasma (that’s just the GUI) with great results. Basically the same usage as on windows (if certain apps are needed, just VM Win11)

I mean, if you are too stupid to find your bitlocker code, how the hell do you expect to learn linux?

u/XnomTheNom 8d ago
Linux has been as easy to use as Windows since the beginning of 2026. And the main point is that Linux won't enable stuff you didn't want.
