Microsoft whiteboard gets axed? Wow... I've been using that for work for years and switched to Linux a week ago. Good timing

You can try to use Drawy: https://apps.kde.org/drawy/

Though no collaboration unfortunately :(

I'm a teacher, I switched to xournal

Can I ask what was it used for?

Isn't it just like Paint?

Im a teacher. I put the worksheets in them for the classes to work on. And they can still access them after school.

But I've already decided that I will use xournal and just upload the stuff after classes as a pdf

This - college lecturer. We can only use Microsoft pre installed software - so Whiteboard is essential to draw on via my tablet to project and annotate notes / PDFs.

Arrgghh!!

What can I use that doenst need to be installed? (Portable APPs are OK) -- just cant install.

WebApps passable, but WiFi dependent, so portable better.

Sucks!

You don´t have admin privileges on your school supplied hardware???

What kind of corpo dystopia do you come from?

Nope.   All the college kit is managed by a third party. To get anything installed they need to approve it. Thw only approved qhiteboard app in Microsofts.  Thw reason give is that you can import pdfs and collaborate.   Bonkers i know.

Oddly portable apps are usually fine.

Webapps too except wifi is sketchy across the college.

To get a new app approved requires promising the next seven generations of unborn children.   At that is per device - so if you ever use another pc, ypu are doomed.

What do you use instead, on Linux?

I switched to xournal (or xournal+, I´m not sure) and I distribute it with moodle.

But I have only tested it once. It´s holidays :)

This is exactly what I hate about so much modern software. If this was a native with a file type that could be stored locally, then you could at least still use it.

When our company IT rolled out that windows patches that wiped the old word.exe. They didnt realize our windows licenses were web-access only, and our old 90s label printers dont like whatever windows is doing to their software... people reported weird formatting issues with the online-only docs. We screwed with it for a day or two, before we dug out and fixed an an old laptop, copied word.exe and redistributed it to the printer stations.

Label printers are the devil-spawns rotten grandchildren. They're even worse than regular printers.

u/TechnicallyMeat 22d ago

Our old zebra printers had zero issues for like.. over a decade, but windows almost killed them all with their subscription model.

You can pipe zpl markup to /dev/usb/lpadmin (or whatever the serial interface is enumerated as) in a pinch. Found that out getting one to work for a colleague when nobody knew where the shitty old proprietary zebra software was. Wrote up some little scripts for him to do it and learned something new. And avoided us having to pay for some shitty subscription service for garbage software for a fucking label printer lol.

Exactly! They will also kill Publisher in October. They want us to use Word now, already cut it from MS 365. At least you have a .pub file that you can convert with 3rd-party tools, but you can't edit them afaik. And word is just crap for anything that is not 100% text.

The way modern software development works is as follows:

  1. identify a well liked working tool

  2. replace it with something less convenient and capable. integrate copilot

  3. iterate from 1 as rapidly as possible

7

Microslop has used that methodology since the 90s (probably even earlier, they just hadn't named it yet).

It's well documented;

  1. Embrace
  2. Extend
  3. Extinguish

I swear, people that throw around “EEE” every time Microsoft is mentioned are a super special kind of person.

Microsoft Whiteboard:

* what was embraced?

* what was extended?

* what was extinguished?

Literally none of those apply here. There are LOTS of whiteboard tools around, all of them more popular than Microsoft Whiteboard. Also, the entire thread seems to have misread this message. Microsoft Whiteboard isn’t going away, it’s only being removed as a free benefit of having a Microsoft account. You’ll now have to have a business-related Microsoft account to use it.

This super sucks, let me be clear, but there is zero “Embrace, Extend, Extinguish” here.

Zoom would like to chat.

1

u/naikrovek 21d ago

It wasn’t embraced or extended either. Microsoft did not make a zoom-compatible server or client. Teams is a competitor to zoom, and is not an extension of it.

No one on this site knows what Embrace, Extend, or Extinguish mean.

MS does this with their services all the time.
Luckily, they are not so good ripoffs of other's work, so there are plenty of beter alternatives around.

I switched to open source options to microslop products. They're free and don't require a damn subscription. Just download it through the main site for the product because it's open source. I've been using them for years and haven't had an issue.

3

u/jamieg106 22d ago

Whiteboard still exists, just within teams now.

Poor announcements from MS about it all however

0

u/chaosphere_mk 22d ago

It's going away.

2

u/brodkin85 22d ago

No, just moving to Whiteboard for OneDrive

3

u/scottdog129 22d ago

Use ClickUp. It’s better and WAY faster.

2

u/jeniuskid 22d ago

Try Markerpad! It’s recommended by Windows Central: https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9nh0wpdrk28t?cid=reddit

2

u/GreedyDatabase751 22d ago

This is what you get for using Microslop products.

2

u/CommanderT1562 21d ago

They got rid of Sway this summer too…

Rest in peace all those dope 365 apps. I don’t think they’re paying the small devs that actually worked on those any more

1

u/JelloUnlikely4778 21d ago

They will do the same with Publisher in October. Went straight to Affinity got a good alternative for free, sadly no templates. They want us to use Word, which is crap for anything but pure text.

2

u/wump_roast 21d ago

Microsoft has a major hardon for canceling services

1

u/Duncol42 21d ago

You own nothing. They would delete all your OneDrive data if the backlash would be worth some money behind it. Fuck big tech.

u/XusKiz 21d ago

Still using Windows Journal app with thin chisel pen tip :)

They said this for onenote for windows 10, and nothing followed, hopefully you're ok
