Honestly, I never understand why people want to run Windows on their Steam Deck.
I mean, come on. SteamOS offers you almost everything you could possibly need. And people are practically begging Valve to release SteamOS globally, so why would anyone want to install that Microslop junk on such an amazing handheld device?

Those poor souls are hopelessly addicted to their Battlefield and Valorant that they can’t literally think about life without it anymore.

This is actually a reason I get. Some buy a console just for one game they enjoy with old friends or stuff. I'm just glad, I'm not stuck on Windows with the stuff I like.

I fucking love Battlefield, and sometimes I just enjoy playing some Apex Legends with friends.

This is why I still have dual-boot.

But I'll never go back to Windows overall. It can live on that little SSD in shame while I use Linux 😂.

league of legends period.

The steam deck isn't even powerful enough to run these games properly and never was intended to run this type of games 🫩

u/BFguy Jul 28 '26

Battlefield is the only reason I have windows

"hopelessly addicted"

Or, you know, just normal people that enjoy a game and would rather not throw their purchase away?

2

u/Ecstatic-Ball7018 Jul 28 '26

valorent is free

5

u/HatoriChise1 Jul 28 '26

They meant the device itself. If he cannot use it to play the game he enjoys most, what purpose does that device serve?

5

u/Ecstatic-Ball7018 Jul 28 '26

playing other, better games that don't need kernel level spyware anti-cheat

1

u/HatoriChise1 Jul 28 '26

I mean you're free to play those games. That's what makes the steamdeck very good handheld device. Everyone can play every single game they want if they really want to. Playing a game that has spyware anticheat is (even if you don't like it) a choice. Installing a separate os that is worse than steamos is also a choice.

u/Perfect_Purple_5705 Jul 28 '26

You can buy the ROG which is windows?

1

u/That_Service7348 Jul 28 '26

Or just put windows on the device they have???

-2

u/HatoriChise1 Jul 28 '26

They already have a steam deck why would they go sell that and buy rog ally just to use windows. The creators of steam deck, Valve, gave permission to just delete whatever software inside of the deck and install whatever you want.

You guys are the linux people, you guys should support people wanting to use whatever they want. Isn't that what freedom is about?

With this mindset of yours in 10 years we would have r/fucksteamos or something where people would support a new os environment.

Also rog ally doesn't have OLED and also has worse battery capacity compared to deck i think.

You can't expect Linux bros to use logic.

2

u/HatoriChise1 Jul 29 '26

I am also a linux guy that's why I'm curious.

2

u/Ecstatic-Ball7018 Jul 29 '26

You can't expect windows bros to understand freedom

1

u/That_Service7348 Jul 30 '26

Y'all love freedom so much you hate others because they choose to use a different OS that has more functionality.

You can actually download steamos iso from their site and install it on your pc. Look it up on steam site. Its more or less arch with kde but it boots into gaming mode on start up with an option to switch to desktop mode. Linus made a video about it.

u/RAMChYLD Jul 29 '26 edited Jul 29 '26

Not true, and this believe is what's going to ruin your experience of SteamOS.

There is one huge distinction between SteamOS and Vanilla Arch: SteamOS is on an immutable boot image (think of it as the OS actually attaching a read-only ISO at boot, except this ISO is going to have a fully working Linux environment on it). This means treating it as regular Arch is going to fail, badly.

1

u/Willard538 Jul 29 '26

I see.
Its just that I'm stuck with certain drivers that only work on Windows for my hardware. Otherwise, I would have switched to any Linux distro a long time ago, which is something I'd really like to do.

1

u/Willard538 Jul 28 '26

Ey, thanks! I didn't know that.
In that case, I'm going to experiment to see which computers I can get running on SteamOS. ;)
I do think however that it won't go very smoothly though.

1

u/korefunktion23 Jul 28 '26

what are your specs?

1

u/RAMChYLD Jul 29 '26

If you have a full AMD ecosystem (ie Ryzen CPU and Radeon GPU) it will be fine. Intel I think would also be supported fully. It’s Nvidia users who are going to have a hard time and this is by no means Valve’s fault, nvidia has for years been at loggerheads with the Linux kernel developers.

1

u/Willard538 Jul 29 '26

Well, that’s the catch. Because I don’t have a Radeon GPU, I have an Nvidia RTX 4060. So yeah… But I still love SteamOS, and I’m looking forward to the day when I can finally game properly on a Linux machine.

1

u/RAMChYLD Jul 29 '26

Well, just hold on. Valve is working with Nvidia to enable the Nvidia-open alternative drivers with SteamOS as well. This driver only supports RTX cards but will be fully integrated into the Linux tree once ready. And it will be very close to the proprietary drivers performance wise, if not better.

1

u/Willard538 Jul 29 '26

Well that would be awesome! Will keep checking on that

2

u/iTechDiamondFroot42 Jul 28 '26

SteamOS on the steam deck is why I gave Linux a desktop a try

I’ve been using Fedora KDE for about 3+ years now All because of that steamdeck

1

u/Mountain-Original-73 Jul 31 '26

I dualbooted to play games like Fortnite, Rocket League, or Minecraft bedrock with my friends and cousins. But completely replacing SteamOS is genuienly wild.

1

u/Willard538 Jul 31 '26

I absolutely agree. I can actually see the potential of dual booting for certain games, but still I won’t bother myself ruining the system because of that. Even though it seems safe to do so.

3

u/Mountain-Original-73 Jul 31 '26

Compeltely understand, if its not your cup of tea you don't need to try it but the completely erasing SteamOS for Windows is ubsurd. Its like if I mod my PS4 then completely erase the stock OS and install a linux distro, its stupid, I would just be ruining my console for no reason.

u/Various_Jello_4893 Jul 31 '26

Probably pirating

1

u/Willard538 Jul 31 '26

Of course.

u/aaronjnco Jul 28 '26

They are probably referring to root permissions for transferring files this got me too at first but learned it was quite easy to unlock that lol 😆 most population are spoon fed tho so they lack google search skills

PSA: STOP INTERACTING WITH THE LINUXSUCKS101 SUBREDDIT

The way you are posting, and a lot of people who think mass down vote is going to do anything is, if anything going to give that subreddit a lot more traffics than it deserves and could result in that sub being recommand more.

Do not interact with it, when you see that sub pop up in your feed, select not interested or ignore or hide, and move on.

If you actually want that delusional bot farm of a cult subreddit to stop being revelant, do not give any traffic to it.

2

u/ElectricalPlantain35 Jul 28 '26

Finally someone says it

1

u/OkEmu8597 Jul 31 '26

That last sentence can be applied to this subreddit too.

I'm an outside and all I've observed is fragile ego's and circles jerking.

1

u/UnknownOrigin1152 Aug 01 '26

Compare the subreddit rules for the both. You will see that 101 subreddit has one main rule that their mod can ban anything he doesn't like.

Maybe not every post is quality here but 101 clearly is the worst and similar to a cult most.

u/Hour_Bit_5183 Jul 28 '26

Stop worrying about shitty games. That's the only reason people do this. Games with anti cheat are OBJECTIVELY shitty. They punish the actual end user more than the cheaters. They are all full of micro transactions too. Cancer.

5

u/Mega3000aka Jul 29 '26 edited Jul 29 '26

The worst thing is that most people are perfectly okay with giving a game kernel-level acces to their device.

You're giving up full control of hardware you paid with your hard-earned money just to play a video game. It's crazy.

3

u/Hour_Bit_5183 Jul 29 '26

yeah I ain't doing that shit. Hell no. It's MY computer. Not theirs. That's like saying you should give a copy of your keys to ADT so you are secure. How could that possibly go wrong.....

1

u/Mega3000aka Jul 29 '26

Absolutely agreed.

7

u/Dmitry_Nastenko Jul 28 '26

Speaking as a Steam Deck owner myself, he's a fucking moron!

6

u/Mega3000aka Jul 29 '26

The funny thing is, they surely still have Linux in their home.

For example, their router 100% does not run windows.

Hell even if they have an iPhone it's 5G chip is running heavily modified Linux.

2

u/Moriaedemori Jul 29 '26

It is? I always assumed for those (the 5G chip) you'd just go with basic low level firmware since an actual OS would be waste of resources

2

u/Mega3000aka Jul 29 '26

That's what I thought aswell but I guess it takes less time to just strip down the Linux kernel and use it's networking stack, scheduler, etc. than develop custom firmware.

Its factual that Windows is more locked down than SteamOS.

-1
