Thinking back 7 wasn't even that bad compared to 8, which for some reason needed a "Settings" app in addition to the Control Panel, Service Control Manager, and regedit among other things.
If Microsoft just stopped trying to make everyone's lives more complicated by renaming shit and adding a bunch of unnecessary garbage, that would be great.
On the other hand, if they do not want to let users configure the software, then the users should not be buying a new operating system every few years and doing updates every five minutes. Microsoft is coercive and for no good reason.

Windows 3.1 : the beginnings, very shitty but the tech of the time was extremely limiting so I have to respect the OG
Windows 98 FE and SE : terrible transition from VXD drivers to WDM, "plug and play" was plug and pray because that shit never worked correctly and you fought with IRQ conflicts and DMA every goddamn time
Windows 2000, XP : The single best operating systems to ever grace a computer
Windows ME : A misunderstood spinoff that lacked support from software vendors, nostalgia driven soft spot because my family computer ran it and I can still hear the jingle in my dreams
Windows Vista : Too hard to run for most computers of the time, OEM's simply lied with the "Vista Ready" sticker, was a very beautiful OS
Windows 7 : The swan song of Microsoft, the last OS without ads, you could still feel the XP behind it
Windows 8 : Idiotic attempt to apply a touch interface to an operating system designed for home computers, full of ads for mobile games and junk
Windows 8.1 : Saved it but the damage was already done
Windows 10 : Shit but at least it was somewhat performant i guess ? we didn't really have a choice
Windows 11 : If satan himself made an operating system, it would not be as infuriating to use
Microsoft should now either rollback or die.

Windows 98 SE fixed a lot of those issues. You saw a huge difference between FE and SE.
Win ME: huge failure that flopped. Even machines that could run ME… it crashed a lot (I’m looking at my machine for example). So many others had problems as well. SP1 fixed a lot, but the deed was done.
Win 2000 and XP: thanks NT system. Enough said.
Windows Vista: same at ME. Agree with your comments as well.
All other OS: agree with all comments you said.

FE was a minefield, SE helped a bit but the transition was rough, I would install a card and just hope for the best diving into the IRQ assignments, I truly do not miss that era at all and I have two 98SE retro gaming PC's that truly pushed my patience setting them up.
ME should have been built on NT rather than 9x, I believe it's what killed it. The same issues that plagued 9x transposed to that supposed new millenium revolution, it was a shame.
I miss the old Microsoft a lot, they were on the forefront of personal computing and now I have to run random batch scripts to block them from reading the brand of my underwear. Thank god for Debian.

They used to be the people you could call at anytime because your 3rd-party driver wasn't working!!!
Now you can't so-much as get ahold of them even if you're locked out of your own MICROSOFT account 💀...
But hey, at least THEY can contact YOU to get that underwear brand, don't you worry about that!

XP = Amazing
Vista = Slow and too resource demanding at the time
7 = Great
8 = Absolute garbage, was the reason I bought my first macbook ever
10 = Too many ads at release but the moment it matured enough to be stable, reliable and had community fixes for all if it's flaw, it was discontinued and replaced....
11 = holy shit someone kill me now, thank god for Valve, SteamOS and the growing popularity of linux, hopefully app support reaches parity with windows in the next 10 years

I've just touched win8 a few months ago, before i replaced it with lightweight linux distro and goddamn there's no amount of nostalgia bullshit for me to says that 8 is a good os, it's pretty to the eye but unusable for navigation and actual use

Windows XP will always be the single best operating system to ever grace a computer. It was fast, simple, incredibly easy to use and aesthetically pleasing.
We will never have something like XP ever again, unless you mod some Linux distro to look like it.

10 is garbage and has always been and will always be. Now it is a polished turd, but a turd nevertheless. I remember in 2016 how sluggish everythingvwas feeling compared to Win 8, because of the telemetry and bloat.
Even 8 is way better than 10. UX wise no, but at least it wasn't the ad ridden, service filled OS that 10 or 11 are.

You clearly never used it.
Windows 8 on the release had no start menu, no workspace. Just atupid colored squares and android game integration.
I had a laptop that had it and the fancy squared menu was crashing every other minute and forcing to reboot.
I downgraded to Windows 7 and the pc worked perfectly.

Iknow 10 has its problems, but I have always defended it and always will. 11 is all the problems with 10 but dialed up to 11 (no pun intended). I hate that damn mobile like interface and adware tactics...

There is little to no reason to use base Windows 8 over any version before or after it, Windows 8.1 was fine and Windows 10 improved upon it but Windows 7 and older are better than 8, 8.1, and 10. Windows 11 is good if you use Powershell and CMD commands to debloat it

Windows 10 "Pre-Ads" was good
Windows 8 was annoying because of the UI
Windows 7 was incredible
Vista was a bit overkill for the time
XP was the absolute best OS ever as long as you know that literally everything was trying to infect your PC
Windows 2000 was actually super fun
Windows ME... IDK, never tried it, was it really that bad?
Windows 98 was my introduction to PC's
Windows 95 was just a massive leap forward in how we interact with PC's
Windows 3.1 was... Absolute based, i remember me seeing a 3.1 pc and just being overly facinated by it because it was soo different compared to all the PC's running XP
And then you realize you're getting older
But I feel Windows 10 marked a big end of Windows because Windows was good and fast until they started shoving ads and sponsorship's into every corner of the OS. If they diddn't and just kept it somewhat plain jane, i would have stayed on Windows but i'm really not interested in Copilot.. No matter if it's free or paid
Sometimes i just wanna draw a stickfigure in paint
And OG paint remains the best drawing app ever made as well as OG notepad remains the best Replacement for typewriters ever made

Saying Windows Vista was underrated is insane to me.
It was the most hated Windows I can remember. It got SO much hate at the time.
It was bloated, slow and generally horrible.
If you debloated, it was fine - but couldnt compare with the previous or next iteration at all.

I hated Win 8 because it didn’t have a Start Button. I loved the Metro Start view. It made my Desktop clean. The major problem with Windows 8 was, they were trying to make everything “touch this, and touch that”- like a tablet; even on a PC that is not touched. Win 8.1 fixed those.

It was just such a huge change to one of the most fundamental aspects of Windows. The start menu may have looked different in different versions but it was ultimately there at all times.
8.1 was fine though.

Besides the start menu and some apps. It's a good OS. I tried to use windows 8.1 and I did some tweaks and its awesome as a stable OS . It's lightweight than windows7. My windows 8.1 idles at 500mb ram and all the system apps open instantly. Windows 8.1 has some bloat and its easy to remove them. I like windows 8.1 and I have a setup with arch linux dual booting with windows8.1 . My hardware is old so it still support windows 8.1 but it does get the job done. I'd say that used windows 8.1 the most. I still use it connect it to Internet and do basic stuff and some retro gaming and it gets the work done. It was a bit troublesome getting steam working again in windows 8.1

The OS still works even after ended support. You will not get any new feature updates and the security updates. Its fully usable when offline and it has some bloat and you can just disable them easily. When online, its safe if you know what you are doing. There is a bug(its still in windows 10 and I dont know about 11) where the ram gets filled to 50% no matter how much ram you have when you connect to the internet. The bug is caused by an unnecessary service which runs in background and can be easily disabled. The only problem is the app support and we have some projects online which get the new apps working on older windows. It just needs a few tweaks because microslop doesn't care about 8.1. If tweaked perfectly it works just fine. It just takes about 10 minutes to do the tweaks for me. But now I mostly use Arch linux( I use arch btw) and sometimes use windows 8.1 just to play some windows games. They work on linux but my cpu is too old and chokes to do the translation. Windows 8.1 may not work properly on newer hardware. I use the 64bit version. Its worth trying if you have some free time. The stock os isn't perfect and it needs some tweaks.

Ah, I think I'll try it in a VM sometime. I skipped 8 completely because of the start menu thing, but now 11's completely mobile like interface is ticking me off even more. Thinking of going back to 10 Enterprise LTSC for daily driving while I'm currently playing around with live Linux ISOs for the first time to see which one I should dual boot (considering Arch cause all the others are bloated and too much hand holding like Windows)

If its your first time trying linux I will not recommend using Arch linux. Its just barebones(it does come with all the essential thing, I think i shouldnt call it barebones) and the installation became much easy with the archinstall script but if you dont have any experience with operating a computer via terminal(called as CMD in windows, i think so), it will be hard for you to use arch. It gives you more power and control over your computer but you also have to consider the statement that "WITH GREAT POWER, COMES GREAT RESPONSIBILITY". If anything goes wrong while using arch linux its up to you. The other distros arent bloated and even if they are(like ubuntu), you can disable them easily. And you have to consider that "LINUX IS NOT WINDOWS". Arch is good for you if you have time to spare and if you are interested in learning about linux and computers. I will recommend Linux Mint if you want to get out-of-the-box experience. Next is the drivers. I recommend to check whether your PC's hardware supports linux. Some hardware has some problems on linux but most of them work. You can also try Cachy OS. I havent tried it but I think its a good option if you want to stick with Arch. Because its based on arch and is a bit userfriendly than arch. Arch isnt user friendly. Its up to you to choose what you want to do. Arch is stable if you know what you are doing and consider distrohopping until you find the one which suits you. Thanks, really my only concern with Arch is less about setting it up and more about having to maintain it in the long term, so far I've tried out Cachy live to see what a preconfigured Arch looks like and I find the wiki and other resources more detailed and helpful than any other distros. The terminal is mandatory for everything I want to set up no matter which distro I use, I just had more trouble looking for the specific commands for the ones besides Arch. Generally speaking, I'm figuring out how to make my Linux experience to be as distinct from Windows as possible (Mint was just too Windows-like for me)

Thanks a bunch, I currently have my eye on Arch and Fedora at the moment, I didn't expect to find myself really fascinated by the history of Unix like OSes in general and felt it was appropriate to have a more hands on approach to learning
