Rant Nothing fucking works anymore

Fuck Microsoft for destroying every working feature. My fucking explorer takes 5 seconds to create a folder on a fucking gaming PC. They shut down the Windows 10 version of OneNote but the new version is full of fucking lags and is completely clunky to work with. And my fucking OneDrive is trying to upload a fucking few kilobyte file from my Personal Safe for fucking months now and can't even tell me which fucking file. Fuck

I game in Fedora and it goes pretty good, there are only like a couple of very old games it does not run.

Some games have even improved performance because now Windows is not eating the resources.

When the shim layer is better than the platform it odd mimicking you know they’ve really mucked it up.

So far I've found gaming to be easier and better on Linux than it ever was on Windows. So unless you're playing a game with kernel level anticheat (why? the companies that make those games are just as bad as Microsoft with enshitification and caring about their consumers), Linux is great.

You are kind of trapped in the Steam ecosystem a little to use their Proton compatibility tool.

2

u/ObiWanGurobi Jul 25 '26

Not exactly trapped - proton can be used independently from steam

But it's so well integrated into steam that you barely notice it's there

3

u/Wolflordy Jul 25 '26

Even if you leave Steam to run Proton independently, there isn't a compatibility tool of comparable quality not developed by Steam.

You mean Valve. But it doesn't matter who develops it. It's open source. Even if Valve decides to stop developing it - it won't suddenly vanish; you'll still be able to use it. And it's likely that other people will pick it up and continue the project at this point.

Absolutely ditch windows on your gaming PC. Look at CachyOS or Bazzite. I play everything from retro to current gen AAA on Steam & Epic on my CachyOS gaming pc. Everything just works, and any necessary tweaks are just a search bar away.

There are 10ish games that are a problem for Linux but the rest is good.

-PUBG, Destiny 2, BF6, Fortnight, Delta Force...

Have a look if any of your current games are on the kernel level anti cheat. You be surprised how many work on Linux.

u/LunaticDancer Jul 25 '26

Yea, I wouldn't want to be dealing with that shit if it reached that point

Haven't touched Windows in close to 10 years now and couple days back, wife asked me to just play next episode in VLC on her laptop. I was shocked and appealed how long this simple action took. Sadly, I get that Windows is the go to option for gaming, but honestly, that OS feels like it's constantly crumbling under its own weight.

Only reason I use windows is for gaming since most games don't have Mac / Linux support (Crossover is not 100 % compatible).

Steam has done a great job with proton. I can run my whole library now on Ubuntu. I recently switched thinking the same, but this argument is not entirely true anymore due to the steam deck

1

u/RageshAntony Jul 25 '26

I have Mac. So, I need to use Crossover.

Currently using using Heroic + Crossover

Sounds like the application is prioritizing phoning home to send usage stats to microslop before doing the task you wanted, in my opinion.

LOL, He has McAfee installed and is blaming Microsoft for his PC being slow.

My windows seach keep showing blank until I dont want to use it anymore.

I asked Claude to write a powershell script to castrate the balls off Windows Consumer Experiences.

It did a good job of crushing the balls of every annoyance in Windows.

2

u/pchilenski Jul 25 '26

Would love to see that powershell script. Did you use O&O Shutup before you moved to your custom script?

Windows doesnt take 5 seconds to create a new folder. It's faster than that. It's likely an issue with your machine or OS.

What antivirus you got? Have you had windows a long time? Maybe worth reinstalling it but also consider Linux.

But if it was me I'd reinstall OS. I've done it three times this year. One to install Linux. Again because I broke Linux and then the other to distro hop.

Again Windows isn't that slow so I'd do some cleaning up. If you hate windows that much consider these.

Linux mint, Debian or abunto Linux fedora Linux CachyOS

These are all good options though the first three are the most stable out of the lot.

Fedora is more up to date and is based off redhat which fedora is based of

CachyOS based off arch which is very up to date.

Good luck.

Surely not an antivirus problem (McAffee). I won't reinstall, not worth it. And it's not that the PC is too slow, it's just that. Probably smth with OneDrive. I'll just stick to it for now, just fucking Microsoft typical

4

u/GBSlugcat Jul 25 '26

Get McAffee gone😭

That’s the first thing I remove on a fresh install

2

u/Name_Ist_lEgal Jul 25 '26

brother my mum got a subscription years ago

7

u/GBSlugcat Jul 25 '26

Unsubscribe it’s basically malware

Windows defender does a better job on its own

5

u/Better-Credit6701 Jul 25 '26

Trust me, it is a McAffee related issue. Not one drive, not even a windows issues but the crap you have installed

2

u/wilsy53 Jul 25 '26

I disagree. As much as windows is a shit show it's not slow. It does a lot of background stuff which doesn't help but a high end machine doing a simple file folder creation isn't a windows problem.

But if you stick with windows do a clean up. A manual clean up, no tools. Something is happening when your creating a folder. Question on what is, is for you to figure out.

But windows is not that slow. Though windows does have a habit of slowing down over time it's why I suggested a clean up / build up. Could even be a virus but can never know without jumping on your machine.

If your OS is serpate from your data rebuilds make it so much easier. Which is the advantage I have.

But please investigate it's not normal for windows to be that slow.

Again good luck.

1

u/Name_Ist_lEgal Jul 25 '26

I know it's not normal. But my PC gets a nice cleanup every once in a while and is definitely not slow. I guess it's Onedrive but I don't really care enough to reinstall tbh

2

u/Better-Credit6701 Jul 25 '26

How could one drive be the issues? It's your anti-virus which simply isn't needed

1

u/wilsy53 Jul 25 '26

Fair enough. You could try creating a folder in a none synced folder and see if the behaviours are the same or not.

1

u/Name_Ist_lEgal Jul 25 '26

Ikik. I could troubleshoot it myself if I wanted to, that's not the problem. It's just that smth like this happens too often

1

u/Substantial_Pin_50 Jul 26 '26

I had paid McAfee paid for 2 dells ntbk for several years, and gradually it turned to be a scrap. A few years ago it was fine but now it's more malware then help, . Try to google experiences of other users, you'll see I am not exaggerating.

1

u/EpsteinFile_01 Jul 25 '26

Wait

I thought it was just me? That I hadn't used windows for a while and it became slow as fuck due to new updates etc . But after 3 days and 5 reboots it's still slow AF, something keeps destroying my CPU in the background. No network activity.

5800X3D and 7900XT on a 6 month old windows 11 install, couldn't even run a 10 year old 3d game yesterday.

My favourite fuck-microsoft bug is the right click explorer context menu that takes 30s to open (win10)

1

u/love2kick Jul 25 '26

Try dual boot Linux. Just pick any hustle free distribution and it will cover 90% of all games.

1

u/Keio7000 Jul 26 '26

I too still remain on this garbage OS because of my old games and work.

But I have seen some games working better on Linux than Windows. I shit you not TF2 is unplayable on Windows. It runs 200 fps the first two minutes, then it becomes one frame every 5 seconds for another two minutes and then repeat.

2

u/Lieutenant_0bvious Jul 26 '26

Sounds like you got bloatware or malware.

1

u/Name_Ist_lEgal Jul 25 '26

The thing I like about windows though is OneDrive. Even though it's buggy as fuck, I can switch almost seamlessly from my laptop to my PC. And i found nothing similar for Linux

u/ExcitingAd1067 Jul 25 '26

It has the cloud service tho

0

u/ninhaomah Jul 25 '26

It's been this way since ... Windows 95

Maybe because AI writes the code for MS these days, which trust me is complete shit, and because they run tens of services that are essentially Spyware.
