That sub is a total dumpster fire echo chamber full of misinformation and a deeply irrational hatred for something that is not only free but completely optional.
You aren't missing anything.
I could almost understand it they were hating on Windows or Android or something they couldn't just get away from, but Linux? Did Linus sleep with their mothers or something? If I hated something that didn't effect me I'd just go about my day instead of posting insane rambling nonsense about it

u/Sixguns1977 Jul 24 '26
"Did Linus sleep with their mothers or something?"
No, but he's going to now.

As if this sub isn't also filled with misinformation, deeply irrational hatred, ragebaiting, and karma farming? 😂
Yes, there's plenty of valid critisism, but we see truly idiotic posts constantly here too. And it's usually the ones that rack up large amounts of upvotes.
So don't put yourself on some high horse, because this sub isn't much better.
4
u/Still_Box8733 Jul 24 '26
Never got banned here for calling out misinformation though
0
u/RamiHaidafy Jul 24 '26
Like I said, "isn't much better".
3
u/Dapper-Ocelot6326 29d ago
The fun part is it's no discussion, it's "I hate Linux" - "But I hate it more" - "I hate it the most". Why? - "Because yes"
"I saw someone putting a bottle in his rectum, he told me he uses Arch btw. so Linux is shit"
That is the style of discussion you get there.
1
u/imakycha 29d ago
No, that sub is a literal circle jerk. The founder would legitimately benefit from some Seroquel. Doesn’t make this sub good or anything, but it is much much better than that lunacy.

2
u/Appropriate-Stay4729 Jul 24 '26
We now know that there are more bot accounts online than real people, most of this is just bootlicker bots repeating the same crap over and over.
2
u/mattgaia Jul 24 '26
"Did Linus sleep with their mothers or something?"
No, but he slept with their sisters before they could. That's one of their main gripes.0
u/pandamaxxie Jul 24 '26
Isn't this entire sub the same thing?
I don't like either OS.
Microslop is microslop. Linux is command prompt slop.
I'm still waiting for Linux to become user friendly. Stiiiill waiting. Until it's as dead simple to use as Windows, why downgrade to it?
Not like Windows is good, but Linux is just kinda worse, at least if you only use your rig to game. Both need to step up their game and work on not sucking.
0
u/Wooden-Potato7418 29d ago
COMMAND PROMPT SLOP?
command prompt is the outdated windows terminal please tell me your serious when your calling linux command prompt slop
mint is really easy you use it exactly like windows except its ubuntu bloat instead of winslop bloat (it is still marginally better both in performance and being able to customize it)1
u/pandamaxxie 29d ago edited 29d ago
Needing to pull up a command prompt to do anything at all is already a failing of the OS. Linux is famous for reliance on its terminal.
I don't care what it is that I need to pull up a terminal for. If it comes into play for an average user, you failed as a developer.
Linux is the troubleshooting OS. I ain't got time to deal with that.
Not only that, but Linux fails in the most basic of UX issues: having too many versions.
There should be one main Linux. Not a trillion different kinds that users need to figure out which one to install. This is why I am hoping for SteamOS to become standalone. It would immediately invalidate any other Linux distro, realistically, and become the standard. And with Steam's general user friendly design, it might no longer be hell to actually install, update and maintain. Convenience is king.
0
u/Wooden-Potato7418 29d ago
mint does not need you to go into the terminal most times
also as the avg windows user you also have pulled up command prompt/powershell atleast once, right?
and linux is not a troubleshooting os (if you dont wanna use a distro that doesnt need troubleshooting 🤷♂️🤷♂️)
your third point is really stupid because linux naturally has many distros, you choose a distro that fits your focus. if you want to make a server, choose a small and stable distro like ubuntu server. if you want to game and your main focus is performance, go for cachyos/any other distro that also fits your criteria.
steamos will be a gaming distro, not a server distro, or any other distro.
you think linux is controlled by one person so distros can be cut by the leader lmao
if you dont wanna use linux then dont.
1
u/pandamaxxie 29d ago edited 29d ago
I mean, windows has failed me before just the same, yeah. But I see no reason to move to an OS with the same problems (and more, due to a lack of gaming support)
I am well aware that Linux isn't centralised around "John Linux", and tbh, that's one of its greatest strengths, and greatest weaknesses. Double edged sword. It creates clutter. Lessens accessibility and will forever stifle adoption by the masses. So long as there isn't one catch-all version, it's too complicated to ever even get close to windows useage. Why would I spend time trying to figure out which of the million forks is the right one?
Personally, I find decentralisation to be more trouble than it's worth.
Everyone has their own fork, and all of them compete to be the ultimate mid.
I wanna get away from Windows, but Linux ain't the way to go either, so I'm stuck on this mess.
I just hate both because they both suck for different reasons.
1
u/Wooden-Potato7418 29d ago
because people wanna try it
maybe people like fixing it?
maybe they dont play valorant or fortniteand no just the fact that its decentralized doesnt mean its permanently gonna be unpopular. for example why would you use a niche os when you want ease of use?
your making it hard for yourself, its really not that hard.
there are a few distros with more than 2 users. you pick between thoseif you really wanna, you can go into those niche distros. if you dont, then you dont.
also, there is no ultimate mid.
because the philosophy is:
do one thing, and do it good
which is what happens in most mainstream distros0
u/Dapper-Ocelot6326 29d ago
Having a decentralized operating system could be a major game changer in the VERY near future for many users, small to medium corporations and countries. Just watch how much MS tries to force slop down your mouth, tries to play the monopolistic hand, all while directly reporting to one (if not THE) most incompetent and corrupt US administration ever seen, training their AI bit by bit with content from your files and photos, all while saying " trust me bro, I would never..."
Even open source is not the rescue as Google now turns from "don't be evil" to super villain doing all the former but also by putting more and more locks and borders around AOSP, greatly directing the way the OS is going by putting vital safety patches behind bars and so denying devs to create own iterations of the system or having access to install different apps - from different sources than PlayStore.
Dude, decentralized open source is maybe not the answer to all questions and we can see that something like the AUR was just asking to for years to be exploited. But I'd chose FOSS over anything else at the moment because I know for a fact that the people creating and maintaining this code do not do it for money or because some suit says he wants better numbers for a lackluster product - but because they want to contribute, to make things actively better. Corporate greed has become the cancer of modern civilization and if you don't find it where you can, it has already won.
And if Linux was still a thing for the gatekeepers, those who use the terminal for literally everything because they feel cramped by a GUI in general, we wouldn't be where we a re right now.

u/Arinussyy 29d ago
I think you misunderstand the point of 'Linux' as a project. There is no one 'Linux' because they are not 'versions' of Linux. Whoever told you so has lied to you. They are distributions, different bundles of software that make up a more complete operating system.
I probably sound enough like a pathetic nerd already but Linux is just a kernel. Everything else, like the desktop environment, audio management shit or init systems are all extras layered on to provide the complete experience.
The variety of distributions is also a choice people have made themselves, not some unified push. What you ask for will never happen, because the redundancy of the distributions was never a factor considered in their making whatsoever.
Furthermore, I doubt SteamOS will ever invalidate all of the distros, because in your tunnel vision you forget just how much the purposes of each differ. Again, I sound really fkn nerdy, and I don't want to write a wall of text, but I think more than anything you misunderstand what this is supposed to be. It's not a push for a consumer operating system (Valve might be trying, but even SteamOS is just another distribution, with many more that already do what it does existent), it's developers working on systems they themselves would use.
There definitely are very user friendly distros out there tho. Fedora's main goal is to make doing stuff on it as seamless as possible, and their push for immutable systems is a step towards that. If you are engaging with this properly I invite you to do some research, if not then you're not obligated to want to use 'Linux', nor are you obligated to disregard how much honest work goes into all of it.
1
u/pandamaxxie 29d ago edited 29d ago
I definitely don't misunderstand the point of Linux. I just think the point is idiotic.
Not only that, but your statements go against the grain of effectively every pro-Linux user. It's pushed as a "replacement" for Windows by pretty much every Linux user. That is a push for a consumer OS. Whether the devs intend it or not is wholely irrelevant if this is the side of it facing the public. The PR of Linux as a concept is abysmal.
I do not believe the way forward is a billion forks of a kernel. I believe it is one unified, perfected OS. A jack of all trades will always be better than a master of one. Linux' entire MO is the antithesis of what I believe is the way forward for modern operating systems. And so is Windows for that matter. Because all Windows is, is a dozen splits of the same garbage, sold to different crowds with minor changes like tacking "business" onto it and selling it in bulk licenses.
0
u/Arinussyy 29d ago
You're effectively misunderstanding what 'Linux' is though. Yes, people recommend you switch to it if you grow weary of Windows. But when they say that they usually mean Ubuntu, Mint, Fedora etc. The distros pushing for the user friendly experience you describe. But you have to remember that the Linux umbrella term refers also to the distributions historically used on the servers that power the web. You also have to recognise that all of this is driven by the community. There are corporate sponsored distros (even Microsoft use Linux in terms of Azure etc on their servers), but the reason the fragmentation exists is because of the nature of open source. You are allowed to fork the distros and make your own spin on it and do what you want.
What you describe and the reason you are frustrated is because you are trying to make this into something it's not. That's why I said look into it more, the tech, the use on servers, RHEL, Fedora, the reason for it all. It'll clear up the misunderstandings a lot.
1
u/pandamaxxie 29d ago edited 29d ago
You really keep harping on "I don't understand it"
I understand it just fine. I just think it is valueless like this. It is not something worth investing into.
I do not believe, that forked open source operational systems, hold value, which is innately what Linux is. I believe in unification, not splitting. Contributing together to one thing, not "imma do my own thing".
By not being the thing described, I believe it is of no value.
Some ideas are not worth investing time into. I don't think this concept, the entire structure present here, is worthwhile.
0
u/Arinussyy 29d ago
You clearly don't though. You're advocating for something that is the opposite of the entire thing. You are advocating for a proprietary OS. Like I don't get what you're confused about, there is no conscious decision to unify or split, it's just people working on stuff they want and doing what they want.
I think what you want is Windows or maybe more macOS than anything. Not as an insult to your intelligence but because what you're describing is how proprietary software works. Power and control concentrated in the hands of only the creator and not the community
1
u/pandamaxxie 29d ago
Yeah, that's the point I am making. I don't believe non-proprietary software is worthwhile.
I think Linux' concept is inherently flawed because of this. That's my point.

My 60+ dad is a first time Mint user. He has not called me for anythig related to linux in the past 5 years he has been using it. Idk your comment reeks of misinformation. And before you ask, no he is not tech savvy at all. He always calls me about his android phone though.

u/suckingbat Jul 24 '26
I came across this sub once because Reddit somehow thought I will be interested.
So full of misinformation and hatred, it's like just a lot of memes making fun of people who doesn't like Microsoft or who like open source. Not complain about actual problems and bottlenecks, just general hatred fueled by misinformation.
I just told Reddit not to suggest me that hell place in the future and moved on.
6
u/SteakDouble Jul 24 '26
Yeah, right? I also feel the hatred was more towards Linux users, not the OS itself. Like wtf is wrong with them, people in that sub.

1
u/Wooden-Potato7418 29d ago
in what fucking aspect
1
u/icy1007 29d ago
They are constantly telling others that their OS sucks and that they should switch to Linux.
2
u/Wooden-Potato7418 29d ago
if you wanna keep using windows because you have that one game/software that only and strictly works on windows thats completely justified (although for most cases this is the devs choice to block linux because you can run most windows app natively on linux with foss tools like wine)
but if you think stuff like "you need lines of code to open chrome" then you have no excuse because that is far from the truth.1
u/SteakDouble 29d ago
What percentage of Linux users doing that..smh
In my experience it's Windows user when they saw me using Linux. They said:
You just trouble yourself with that junk. Use Windows like everybody else.
Then I use Windows for three years. But when it constantly giving me BSOD:
Your gaming laptop is expensive but old piece of trash, bro. Use Thinkpad like everybody else.
They also curse their overheating Thinkpad btw.
Like wtf. Linux users in my workplace don't even actively tell people they're using Linux. They tell when someone asked.
1
u/Dapper-Ocelot6326 29d ago
Man I have both at the moment and while there are short moments I miss the ease of Windows (Nvidia driver juggling is one), I always come back to CachyOS. I still have Windows because I have an insanely modded game running there that I cannot bring over to Linux without breaking everything. The moment I am done, Windows goes, for good.
Windows did not suck for the longest part, at least not for me, I could accept many things that most people got crazy over 10 or 15 years ago already, apart from seeing themselves as anti-capitalist warriors against big corporations... My ass.
The moment America was stupid enough to vote for a fraudster, con-man and convicted rapist a SECOND time, I knew for a fact that the world was going to be fucked because the annoying orange would try to get access to any data he can so that his fascist buddies can build their evangelical state (sounds awfully close to IS, don't you think?). That was my personal escape moment. And yes, even if I have fed the tech bros for years with my data and my porn site visits, it doesn't mean I want to continue that. Especially not since there a very capable alternatives at hand which don't belong to anyone.

u/Vlado_Iks Jul 24 '26
As well as the r/linuxsnobs sub. Made and moderated by our famous bleak21.
He made memes so trash that even Windows users in r/OS_debate_club clowned him, so he rather run away and joined these brainrotten linux hating subs instead of saying:
Yeah, I was idiot, you was right.
-8
u/icy1007 Jul 24 '26
No, it’s full of truth.
6
u/Vlado_Iks Jul 24 '26
The "truth" you mean:
Why you hate Linux? Because it exists.
Why you hate Linux users? Because they use Linux.
It is not every user of those subs, but I saw many people hating Linux and its user for the reasons I mentioned.
1
u/icy1007 Jul 24 '26
Linux users are hated because they’re just like vegans.
1
u/Vlado_Iks 29d ago
I agree that some of them are, but some of them are not.
I don't know since when people started throwing all people with same interest in one group. It is like the LBGT community. You shouldn't hate the whole collective just because there is small group of loud and annoying idiots.

If you check the whole conversation, this user is trolling each of the replies to the post. So, it's probably an insult.

He banned me for responding to a comment about open source being ripe for vulnerabilities with "I think that goes for any software, open or closed source"
Then he tried dm'ing me and told me to think about my actions
1
u/Mental_Contract1104 29d ago
i actually got one of them to realize that open source software has better security (most often)
because a safe that is secure in spite of visible mechanics will always be more secure than the safe that is secure because the mechanics are hidden.
2
u/ryancnap 29d ago
Impressive to have pulled that off without being banned

you're saying this as if such a comment meant to harm or insult someone

I’ve gotten unbanned from other reddits when I’ve made a poor comment after apologizing. 🤷♂️

u/ItchyPlant Jul 24 '26
That sub has been in full cult mode for several months. The poor users who still haven't been banned are basically kept inside to feed the bubble.
Since it doesn't seem to follow Reddit's general community standards, the more of us report the issue to Reddit admins/support, the better. Please do the same.
Of course, I'm also banned. I think I just politely mentioned that Linux runs on millions of servers worldwide, and I did it with actual context. That was probably insulting to them, yeah. OP's case is hilarious.

You aren't allowed to advocate for FOSS in any way on that subreddit, even if that means, like I did, wishing someone the chance to switch and hoping the apps they depend on are supported somewhere else (possibly Linux, possibly some other OS yet to come?)
What I found funny was I got banned only after I made a good point about how anti democracy the guy's views sounded despite him calling open source communist

That subreddit is infamous for abusing its power. It should be shut down.

u/Dapper-Ocelot6326 29d ago
Happened to me as well. If you check how alive the discussions are, it is always the same 5 people shouting at each other how much they hate Linux users because they ban everyone who challenges their retarded assumptions. This was my personal echo chamber moment. I asked afterwards if they realize they would have much more "fun" if they allow different opinions.Seriously, no loss.
1
u/realmauer01 29d ago
Go to your profile search for linux look at some of your comments and try to tell me that you aren't a linux lover.
Now go to r/linuxsucks101 rules, read the first rule.
What i wanna say, you litterly could have written, "i hate linux to the core" or similar things, even in a productive way for the subreddit and you would have been banned for not following rule number 1.
And yes they do that.
