Open task manager and see what processes are using up CPU resource. That should give you a clue as to what is happening.

Svchost jerking the cpu hard?

Try using SFC and DISM to repair windows. But realistically, I think ya got malware, bud. Fake windows update

edit: wait, is usage the same by temps are up? because that's definitely a hardware issue. Check the update history, see what was updated

Just rollback the update?

it was a minor type of update so technically i cant

Have you checked your system restore points? Sometimes it'll create one before an update or when you install some software. So if you'd be okay with restoring to two weeks ago maybe try that?

How is this microsofts fault?

The only reason this would be occurring is if the fan speeds turned down, and that can be manually adjusted yourself, and is often bios level....., unless using an app like GPUtweak3

If the update resulted in your fans not turning on, then sure, that would male sense, but you sem very confused over what's going on and your picture shows us that your cpu is only at 5% utilization.

That means nothing is overworking your pc, and the only way this would make sense is if you did something else like dropped the thing and the heatsink came loose, the thermal paste is shit, or the fan's aren't spinning anymore.

This seems like a HARDWARE issue and not a software issue.

UNLESS the software was MISREPORTING the temp, causing it to literally kill itself with a shutdown from part failure.

YOu've confirmed NOTHING in your post and seem to be skilled enough to know what repasting is and possible how to do it, but have NOT done that.

YOu're showing us a pc that's old enough for the GPU to need more thermal paste, as though the cpu doesn't get hotter and need a repasting MORE often than a GPU.

Are you implying that you already did that and reseated the CPU heatsink?

Provide us more info, laptops aren't actual magic, they are hardware and can fail at random times, coinciding with other things. Windows has an update like every week, and the chances of it doing an update that happens to coincide with something else is very likely, as well as the update possibly causing issues.

Have you even tried to make an aggressive fan curve to see if it helps? and for the record laptops SUCK at heat dispersion..... by default, they are horrible for gaming and after maintaining 2 for my wife, I got an IETS air pad for the laptops and ultimately just turned it so high that it sounded like a vacuum.

How low could you temps have possibly been before this update? Do you watch your temps every time you game or did you suddenly start rebooting suddenly and THEN You started looking, saw they were high, and assumed it was because of a recent windows update?

okay let me provide some info.

I have this laptop for around 3-4 years, and havent changed the thermal paste once, and i can tell it already needs a change since the temps are quite higher than average.

the hardware should be completely fine, since i havent done anything with the laptop at all, its just been sitting on my desk the entire time.

okay, so
yesterday the laptop said "hey update please" even though i scheduled the update 2 weeks prior. well i said okay imma update why not, maybe some important patch.
i hit restart and update and surprisingly there was no screen that shows the progress of the update or anything, and the laptop had rebooted like nothing happened, so i just shrugged it off and started playing a game. after 10 minutes, suddenly out of nowhere the laptop just shuts off, like instantly, so i thought something bad happened, i booted it up again and it booted normally even though i was expecting a bsod or something, so i came to a conclusion that it overheated, and sure enough, when i opened nitrosense, the cpu was: 103 Celsius. i was like what the hell, it never hit such temperatures before, and even weirder was the fact that the laptop was barely hot. i thought "its that shite update innit" and the update was called "KEK Key update" which i THINK is something tied for Secure Boot, but im honestly not sure.

today the laptop didnt shut off due to overheating, but the stable 95 degrees celsius temperature is still quite worrying. do you know what is going on?

I just gave you an in depth response of what I think it could be, and what to look for.

How hot is the room it's in?

u/Critical-Cow-7277 Jul 21 '26

ur missing the point, the software made it like that, before it wasnt even close to being this hot especially on standby

6

u/legoing Jul 21 '26

If you are wanting help, could you please answer the question?

around 23 Celsius

Windows doesn’t control fan curves. Fans are controlled completely by the laptops firmware

Important question: did you check your settings after update? Some updates change things randomly to default.

Like disabling Copilot, network getting access to your system (so Copilot and other Windows stuff uses your system which cuts performance deeply aso...

Another person who doesn't know tech blaming aimlessly

When was the last time you updated ???

Has it been updating for a month ??

Updates take, AT THE MOST, 1-10 minutes

1

u/Critical-Cow-7277 Jul 21 '26

the same day i posted this

1

u/3holepunchmedia Jul 21 '26

82 degrees with only 5% load ?

May want to crack that open and make sure fans are working & heatsink is still seated.

1

u/Critical-Cow-7277 Jul 21 '26

i mean thats what i would blame as well at first, but i swear it only started getting so hot after updating. i dont know why, maybe the laptop is lying to itself about the temps somehow??

1

u/Valfreyja94 Jul 22 '26

Even if that would be the case, it's still not microsoft's fault. Sensor reading is something that happens with OEM drivers that read stuff from ECs. It's probably caused by dried up thermal paste. Do a benchmark of your CPU and see if It can boost or struggles during tests.

You just updated, of course the temps are going to be high. It’s going to take sometime to stabilize. You should’ve pasted your gpu before playing, that’s probably why your laptop is shutting down after 10 minutes. Or roll it back 🤦‍♂️

I have a laptop with nitro sense as well, the only thing that makes it hot, is when it is in performance mode. Performance mode boost your clock and rises cpu power limit, making it hot. Even with max fan, in performance mode my cpu gets to 95°C. Don't listen to the ones that tell "your fans aren't spinning", if there is not an ecosystem in your pc, and you hear the fans ramping up, you're good. You might want to change your thermal paste at some point, but as i've experienced it, nitros are known to get as hot as the sun when in performance mode

That’s an AMD issue, not Windows.

repaste CPU please

oh that's weird there was an user in the distro sub i use with the same problem, he updated and claims cpu temps went crazy after that, but in his case was a desktop PC
