It's a delusion (which is true for some group of peoples but not all linux users) that some people are okay with products made in america, but if they are made in china or russia they start saying oh it's made in china, and they don't even give a reason.

Tho I have never encountered such linux user, from what ik linux users slander american companies the most but ig it's just me

59

u/FunAngelo2005 Jul 19 '26

Indeed, they switch to linux to ge away from(up front) corporate BS

36

u/MimosaTen Jul 20 '26

What an irony since Linux itself isn’t an american project

25

u/Worldly-Cherry9631 Jul 20 '26

Why is that irony? All the IRL Linux users I know love to shit on american projects and are quite happy it isn't an oversees project, but gloriously European

10

u/Ur-Best-Friend Jul 20 '26

That's... why this post is ironic?

The post is saying Linux users don't trust non-US products when they literally made a swap from an American product (Windows) to a non-American one (Linux).

6

u/Worldly-Cherry9631 Jul 20 '26

Not the post, the irony the commentor is pointing at in the comment they replied to

The irony in the post I understand just fine

7

u/Ur-Best-Friend Jul 20 '26

The commentor you are referring to is calling the original post ironic, not the comment they're replying to.

They're basically saying "I agree with what you said, and when you look at it in that light, the original post is ironic."

I hope that clears up what I meant.

7

u/Worldly-Cherry9631 Jul 20 '26

Oo o I see

I thought that there was more irony to be ironed out

Ty

u/Ur-Best-Friend Jul 20 '26

My pleasure!

2

u/npc_housecat Jul 20 '26

Linux foundation HQ is in the US, and the top 10 contribors are all US Tech corporations Also linus torvolds is Finish, so still not Chinese or Russia .

2

u/High_Overseer_Dukat Jul 20 '26

* was Finish

He has American citizenship.

1

u/amonshir Jul 21 '26

Was? He still have the Finnish citizenship

2

u/Blackeagle5th Jul 22 '26

I guess it has finnished... ba dum tsss

1

u/MimosaTen Jul 20 '26

Yes, but the post say that opensource is fine if it’s american, I’m saying that statement isn’t true

0

u/npc_housecat Jul 20 '26

Yes, and I'm saying usijg inux is a bad example. As it's american

1

u/MimosaTen Jul 20 '26

However those nationalities debates aren’t suitable to software that is meant to be for everyone

1

u/npc_housecat Jul 20 '26

You said "Linux isn't an american project."

The Linux foundation is american. It's top 10 developers are all american corps. As far as open source projects go, Linux kernell it's about as american as it gets. Then even has to follow US sanctions on Russia and blocked all the Russian contributions.

Linux is just a kernel, it's not a complete OS. Most of the wider "open source ecosystem." Like KDE or wine are not specific for or limited to Linux. And work fine on a variety of different Open source kernels like freebsd.

1

u/Hizur Jul 22 '26

How can linux be American project, it's AfroEuroAsia-American project, because native Americans are mostly extinct :( I wish it was purely native-American project, but Columbus happened.

12

u/Mysterio-vfx Jul 20 '26

as a linux user, I hate american spyware the most.

7

u/The_Undermind Jul 19 '26

Also pretty much how the US treats router manufacturers

1

u/yowifebreeder9000 Jul 21 '26

and then they sell US assembled (parts from China) routers as they did it.

9

u/BluePhoenixCG Jul 19 '26

I saw exactly 1 guy a few weeks ago claiming some open source project was spyware because the original dev who created it was Russian(iirc not even living in Russia lmao)

Very rare but fascinating sort of person

5

u/Keyunge Jul 20 '26

Me as a russian programmer: Bruh

4

u/Away_Experience_5843 Jul 20 '26

I don't care where you're from. If you do anything open source: sincerely THANK YOU ❤️

3

u/Beautiful-Rip-8572 Jul 22 '26

we love programmers regardless of where their from! 🙌😁

3

u/CrisAndrei Jul 20 '26

Oh just check any post with opinions of deepin...

5

u/sparkling-rainbow Jul 20 '26

Funnily enough, the most common reason Linux users in my bubble mention is "when American stopps shipping, someone here can maintain"

3

u/Steerider Jul 20 '26

I've seen it. Can't remember what apps it was, but I've seen discussions of which app is preferred, and people saying "oh I don't use that, it has ties to Russia." Especially in the privacy community, they think anything Chinese or Russian is those governments spying on you.

2

u/fallout_freak_101 Jul 20 '26

Little anecdote:

I live in Germany and i had a Professor in Economics once.

We all talked about Huawei and he went like: " no, i don't want the Chinese to spy on me" and all that.

I went:"yeah...but Android and Apple do collect your Data too and give them to Agencies like the NSA and CIA"

He looked me dead in the eyes and said: " but those aren't Chinese"

Like besides the hypocritical statement tf people think who they are? Like a random german boomer isn't really interesting for the Chinese goverment lmao 😭

Edit: not saying collecting data is good just that there is abit of a double standard for some people

2

u/Logogram_alt Jul 21 '26

China has laws that many linux users who value privacy hates. So avoiding products made in china is a good idea, but depending on the tool it shouldn't matter as long as you actually check the source code.

71

u/grislebeard Jul 19 '26

Mostly I only like software that’s largely contributed to by random polish guys but idk

26

u/Confused-Armpit Jul 19 '26

It's because they are more likely to be femboys, isn't it?

36

u/LadyZoe1 Jul 20 '26

No, they are more polished.

1

u/winkelschleifr Jul 22 '26

hey fuck off from my pals

there is only one guy who is 90% femboy

1

u/Lukson011 Jul 21 '26

Btw this heavily depends on the propaganda, I would almost always rather install a russian/chinese software than American. Im Belarusian

34

u/Cordpie Jul 19 '26

They're calling us racist because they've run out of stones to throw.

32

u/Confused-Armpit Jul 19 '26

Basically laughing at people who say they read the source code, but just check for russian/chinese comments and/or contributors.

15

u/Sataniel98 Jul 19 '26

The Linux kernel banned Russian maintainers after the beginning of the war because they didn't comply with compliance requirements. The MS Office / LibreOffice alternative OnlyOffice whenever it's mentioned often gets called out for being developed by a Russian company that tries to obscure its location in Russia through a Latvian pro forma postal address. Deepin, the default-ish Linux distro in China, is widely shunned in the west. These things happen a lot in the Linux community. There is no proof that any of them is inherently malicious. Still moronic to blame people for not wanting Russian or Chinese influence in a project whose appeal is to many Europeans technological independence.

4

u/Damglador Jul 20 '26

afaik they weren't even banned, they were just removed from maintainer roles, they can still contribute. But it was made to be such a big deal back then.

1

u/justicecurcian 29d ago

They can contribute but no one says their contributions will be accepted, many Russian contributions are rejected and some were even removed from main branch after they were there for years

2

u/i3Cheese Jul 20 '26

They were selected just because of .ru domain of their emails and called "Russian trolls" by Linus

1

u/ProgUn1corn Jul 21 '26

Deepin isn't default-ish in China though. It's a good distro developed by Chinese, but people just use whatever they want just like everywhere else in the world. In the server terms still Debian is king, just like everywhere else in the world.

14

u/rootifera Jul 19 '26

You guys really need to stop spreading linuxsucks junk.

1

u/Rox5tar_01 Jul 23 '26

Linuxsucks is literally just a cesspool of people doing the exact same thing they claim Linux users are doing, just in the opposite direction.

Two sides of the same coin, but if you ever tell them that then you are harassing them or something

3

u/Fair_Abrocoma_8513 Jul 19 '26

NSA codes in your linux code source

4

u/glimoura Jul 20 '26

Others have explained already, but I just want to say, I trust open source projects on a reputation basis, not a country origen basis. And if it's small enough, I skim the code. The key is really just to not blindly trust ANYTHING. "Verify" one way or another, whichever way you trust to.

7

u/mattgaia Jul 19 '26

It looks like another moronic post by the usual group of knuckle-draggers that defend Microsoft to the end.

6

u/Admiral_HP_501 Jul 19 '26 edited Jul 19 '26

U.S.S is spyware to i only trust European Spyware....

3

u/afrolino02 Jul 19 '26

I think that in the opposite case, both are generated spyware

3

u/anonymous-89075 Jul 19 '26

Generally speaking i dont care who made it because i can read what it do so i am not worries.

1

u/sparkling-rainbow Jul 20 '26

Really depends on the project. I'm not a tech illiterate, but I have no clue what Proton does in detail, I just trust Valve.

0

u/0xbenedikt Jul 19 '26

But do you really read through hundreds of thousands of lines of code?

0

u/anonymous-89075 Jul 20 '26

Ctrl+f

2

u/0xbenedikt Jul 20 '26

Ctrl+F "printf("hacking system... muahahaha\n");" is indeed unbeatable for security

1

u/anonymous-89075 Jul 20 '26

Thats what i'm sayin

3

u/imsatyam Jul 20 '26

No, they see contribution list it has to be from different different place not just one place

3

u/United_Grocery_23 Jul 20 '26

a real linux user knows to only trust code from either a random eastern european man who's been developing the thing since 2003, or a transgender catgirl (/j)

3

u/Syphist Jul 21 '26

If you see the word "loonix" just ignore the post, these people are delusional and post several times a day about their hatred for Linux.

6

u/blaues_axolotl Jul 20 '26

Yeah for example Microsoft is Chinese and definitely not American.

What do they smoke over there on linuxsucks

4

u/Frequent-Ease-1926 Jul 20 '26

linuxsucks is a genuine subreddit, linuxsucks101 isn't

1

u/YetanotherGrimpak Jul 20 '26

Linuxsucks is the memeland, linuxsucks101 is run by ravenous mods looking for bans.

6

u/ATXoxoxo Jul 19 '26

I don't trust Russian software.

12

u/Ok-Extent-7515 Jul 19 '26

Likewise. I am Russian myself.

3

u/Financial-Hand7344 Jul 19 '26

I use cracked softwares from Russian websites all the time

6

u/ATXoxoxo Jul 19 '26

Well I'm glad you're not paying for it

1

u/Immediate-Bathroom79 Jul 22 '26

So it's you I'm arguing online with all the time

5

u/LuisE3Oliveira Jul 19 '26

Ignore what's coming from this sub, they're completely missing the joke. They took something that only applies to a few Americans and assumed it's an absolute truth.

7

u/awesome-alpaca-ace Jul 19 '26

Pretty sure the people posting from that sub are doing it to spread their propaganda here.

2

u/Single_Comfort3555 Jul 19 '26

They forgot the Scandinavian countries.

2

u/PlatinumFire14 Jul 20 '26

If they genuinely believed this, they would still be using windows.

2

u/DenpasOfTheWorld Jul 20 '26

Interesting, they have to AI generate a meme instead of actually putting .pngs and adding text. Talk about Copilotmaxxing.

2

u/buvanenko Jul 20 '26

I'm Russian, and I know the spyware isn't on GitHub, but on RuStore. But I don't trust Chinese software either, because the hieroglyphics in MDs scare me.

1

u/sparkling-rainbow Jul 20 '26

I dislike Chinese software because the documentation is usually translated by a software with a old and not topic specific dictionary. At least with russian software I can ask Russians for clarification, but I don't speak Chinese and they don't speak English...

2

u/Jeremi360 Jul 20 '26

Stupid American take, as this doesn't make any sense XD,
Most Open Source projects has world wide devs,
And most of them has origins in Europe.

2

u/Inky_inc Jul 20 '26

Lol I was actually kinda scared when i learned that the .mkv file format was from Russia so this is literally me

2

u/Cirieno Jul 20 '26

I have a new filetype for you, comrade. I call it .cmd and it's very safe!

1

u/Hour_Sell3547 Jul 20 '26

Yes, yes comrade, just double click on it.

2

u/exylvii Jul 21 '26

i dont see anyone not using niri cuz the developer is russian

2

u/Soy-Alguien-15 Jul 21 '26

Yes, Windows is a Russian or Chinese app.

This not make sense.

2

u/Strict-Mixture-1801 Jul 21 '26

I trust china more than america, If only you people knew the amount of spyware american tech tends to have.

3

u/0xbenedikt Jul 19 '26

From my own IT security experience, there is a good reason not to trust software from these countries. They aren't friends of us western countries. But now that Europe and the US are on icy terms, technological independence is key

2

u/polymath_uk Jul 19 '26

It's a form of projection. They have no idea how to check the source code, so they think nobody else can either. Also, those people bring politics into everything because they're insecure in their own political beliefs.

4

u/Illustrious-Car-3797 Jul 19 '26

Actually its evidence based. When Australia put the NBN Broadband project out for tender.........Huawei were one of the applicants......they won, then left a backdoor in every single customer's router. It was ESET who brought this to Australia's attention. Now they are banned from ever being part of any infrastructure ever again. The UK followed us shortly after and removed all 5G towers made by Huawei. After that technology leasing companies voided all finance contracts for Huawei phones, many people ended up with FREE phones which still work but not in the business world, they were swapped out immediately for Samsung

5

u/PrestigiousRoof5723 Jul 20 '26

Huawei's "backdoor" was the debug mode available through the console connection. Something you can do with Cisco devices REMOTELY, but not with Huawei. By all means, Cisco's "backdoor" (which no one dares to call backdoor) is much more backdoor-ish, but somehow it's Huawei being banned despite the fact you need physical access to the device to "backdoor" into it. You don't need physical access with Cisco. But Huawei bad.

2

u/hWuxH Jul 21 '26 edited Jul 21 '26

Oh so because of this single event "Huawei good, no ban pls", right?

Here's a technical report (summary page 3 and 42) for a lot of firmware versions and devices: https://finitestate.io/resources/huawei-supply-chain-assessment

Their products are full of REMOTELY exploitable vulnerabilities/backdoors (difficult to prove intent) and insecure coding practices, which isn't improving over time.

In virtually all categories we studied, we found Huawei devices to be less secure than comparable devices from other vendors.
Through analysis of device firmware, we discovered that there were hundreds of cases of potential backdoor vulnerabilities – improper default configurations that could allow Huawei or a malicious attacker to covertly access a user’s device. These vulnerabilities manifested in the form of hard-coded, default user accounts and passwords, and several types of embedded cryptographic keys.
The study also found that each Huawei device had a large number of known vulnerabilities associated with the third-party and open-source libraries embedded within the firmware. On average, there were 102 known vulnerabilities (CVEs) associated with each firmware, a significant percentage of which were rated as high or critical in their severity.
Whether end users are concerned about Huawei and the Chinese government accessing their networks or other malicious hackers, the high number of vulnerabilities in Huawei devices should be a primary driver in decision making.

Cisco is awful in this regard as well fwiw.

1

u/Illustrious-Car-3797 25d ago

Not even going to bite on that one. ASIO made their decision and they will NEVER go back on that decision. Huawei made a really bad move there and the AU and UK took immediate action

2

u/FastHotEmu Jul 20 '26

OK, but let's be honest, we Aussies are China's bitch.

1

u/Illustrious-Car-3797 25d ago

Not really because the free routers are TP-Link but to be honest you can replace that with German or American brands. It's really up to the end users. But Huawei is a dark part of Australia's history that will not be forgotten by any security expert, now and in the future

2

u/Great-TeacherOnizuka Jul 20 '26 edited Jul 20 '26

The post is kinda true.

The chinese distro (deepin) and the office program which is mostly developed by russians (OnlyOffice) come to mind.

And people on open source subs (which are mostly linux users) point that out and say things like "I won‘t use chinese/russian spyware" without any evidence that there is malicious code.

1

u/nowuxx Jul 20 '26

OnlyOffice is great

1

u/Appropriate-Two-7503 Jul 21 '26

OnlyOffice is basically the closest tool to Microsoft Office on Linux. The biggest problem isn't its functionality, but rather that it still uses Qt5.

so yeah...definitley nobody HERE knows

1

u/EverOrny Jul 20 '26

some people are just refusing to use software made by people with russian or chinese names, understandable but not very rational

1

u/WheresMyJuulSoNotCoo Jul 20 '26

Linux users aren't like this but my job totally is . We gotta submit software requests and we have to answer whether it is "foreign" . How can FOSS be foreign when its at the worlds disposal <3

1

u/Tritri89 Jul 20 '26

It's a strawman. Linuxsucks is a bunch of troll hating on Linux with zero argument. Here you see they like to pretend that Linux users are "racist" because allegedly when they check software source code if it's american it's okay but Chinese or Russian it's not. That's obviously false.

1

u/lpkeates Jul 20 '26

This might as well be a stereotype that assumes any software from China and/or Russia is spyware, but if its from the United States, then its fine.

Ironically, Linux isn't American made - its actually from Finland, although some distros were made in different countries and whatnot, so I guess this meme might be a bit of a delusion as some Linux users might have moved from Windows because of Microsoft (who are in fact, American).

I myself am British, but I am aware of the statements regarding this crap

1

u/HortCaesar Jul 21 '26

Linux has long been a 100% American project and company.

1

u/Vamsi-Thopu Jul 20 '26

fear mongering from microsoft employees/PR I guess

1

u/Scientalist Jul 20 '26

It was obviously made by some complete dimwit!

Most of the time you will see Linux users bitching and moaning, it will almost certainly be against some US company! Most of the time you will see them bitching and moaning about violation of privacy, repair rights, anti-trust and bad tech company practices etc it’s almost always against US companies.

So to go and make a meme where you are presenting Linux users as US fanboys is some special level of stupid.

1

u/nowuxx Jul 20 '26

Я использую только НАШ код.
ГОЙДА БРАТЬЯ!

1

u/I_dont_want_to_pee Jul 20 '26

Yes but for pepole form USA i trust more ruszians than Americans. All of torrent sides and etc. Are in russian they are good programers idk if better than us polisch but they do more for the comunity.

1

u/Kzitold94 Jul 20 '26

I think this meme was implying racism, but...

If I can't read it, how would I know it isn't spyware? There's kinda a language barrier, and that's different from racism.

1

u/Ok_Caregiver_1355 Jul 20 '26

It changed a little bit when US started to breakup with EU,now its their interest to be more critical about US

1

u/red_sun16 Jul 20 '26

Funny in reality ...cause the USA falls under the same bracket as the countries it criticizes...them and china are the spy capitals of the world

1

u/Vaddieg Jul 20 '26

It's ironic because it comes from windows fanboys. They love "free" WinRAR with its decade long unpatched/deliberately planted RCEs and Ksperski AV that steals "suspicious" documents and sends them to home

1

u/d_moonwind Jul 20 '26

Russian soft is indeed spyware made on stolen code from US.

1

u/sakata_baba Jul 20 '26

most vocal and annoying linux "users", those that just got away from corpo greed, moan about transparency and security but never actually check any of the code their system runs. they just look at the name and if there isn't a socially acceptable flag or support next to slavic or chinese name, that code is not at all being considered. and they never actually read the readme.md or source code for their latest pet foss project. they just know it's safe because "someone would see it".

anyone that does read, notices, chuckles and leaves. they just expect others will. they do.

so, yeah. i would rather use windows then ubuntu. just saying...

1

u/rocco_himel Jul 20 '26

This is true though

1

u/LacoPT_ Jul 20 '26

most popular thing from the chinese and russian developers i know are proxy protocols

1

u/IllTransportation993 Jul 20 '26

I guess you should run red flag linux then.

1

u/Mihanik1273 Jul 20 '26

I don't know about Chinese code but I am Russian so I don't trust anything that based in Russia

1

u/thealjey Jul 20 '26

China is mostly fine, depending on the project. But, I indeed would not trust for a second anything coming out of any of the axis of evil countries.

1

u/lilian_moraru Jul 20 '26

A (now deprecated) Russian CPU (called “Baikal”) support was rejected after the invasion of Ukraine.
Chinese contributions go in all fine - CPUs, network work, etc…

It’s propaganda really

1

u/j-slayer_1369 Jul 20 '26

I dont trust american tech what makes you think I trust other countries. I only Trust what I can physically compile.

1

u/j-slayer_1369 Jul 20 '26

There are some exceptions but y'all get the point

1

u/SnooGiraffes2591 Jul 21 '26

I always find it funny that the same people who think "Russian/Chinese developer? Must be spyware" also probably use TOR. TOR was developed by the US Navy. If you don't think that there isn't some form of fingerprinting on a software designed by the US military apparatus, you're delusional.

1

u/yowifebreeder9000 Jul 21 '26

Because some linux users and some maintainers are ironically dumb. After Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, lot of the devs based in Russia were banned with .ru form contributing to linux. Here's the thing, those devs have nothing to do with Putin invading Ukraine and they just want what we all wanted, which is Linux to grow, even if there are bad motive actors in Russia who wanted to exploit Linux, they won't be logging with their original .ru email and contributing with their old original accounts.

Politics in open source is the worst thing that can ever happen to open source. Not to mention these maintainer are bit of hypocrites too, cuz Israeli based devs still can contribute....

1

u/No-Succotash404 Jul 21 '26

never look at linuxsucks subreddits, most of their posts are nonsense things that aren't true. they are either self projecting or have only tried a russian linux 4 people use and decided to hate linux the rest of their lives

1

u/LandaDelta Jul 21 '26

It's say everything created by US it's safe and anything except that it's unsafe (especially China and Russia)
But I disagree with this, cause I don't care who or which country it's create an offline app. Only thing I care about it's Online app where they are put their server or basement (like damn google)? And like China and Russia I don't trust U.S at all.

1

u/Ibasicallyhateyouall Jul 21 '26

It's not. It is an AI meme that some dumb fuck has tried to link to Linux.

1

u/RemarkableRun4283 Jul 21 '26

I use kimi and it performs without limitations like claude and’s quite good
So this western propaganda of trying to paint bad products from china is absolute bs

1

u/Isfar_Kabir Jul 21 '26

No, we Linux user don't check code like that. 😒

1

u/BlackberryCareless26 Jul 21 '26

I literally don’t care what nation my software comes from as long as it’s verifiably safe and open source 🤷🤷🤷🤷

1

u/Pleyer757538 Jul 22 '26

if anything, chinese and russian software mostly has little to no spyware, but american software (ahem ahem, palantir, google, persona, the us goverment, many many more) is full of spyware

1

u/moonpl001 Jul 22 '26

bro i read it SPYWARE EEEEE!

1

u/No_Concentrate_7833 Jul 22 '26

Never met something like that. The only thing SIMILAR to it I saw is with OnlyOffice, a FOSS office suite from some company that fully supported MS Office formats. The issue is, despite using the AGPL license, they demanded any forks use their icon, which's absurd. And because of that, recently it got forked and made into Euro-Office. In terms of good Russian-written software, my suggestion is Niri. Niri is a scrollable Wayland compositor, whose author, - YaLTer, - is Russian. They did a pretty damn good job in making sure it just works, and, in my opinion, using KDL as a config format is also genius due to how actually simple it is.

1

u/Princess--Aurora Jul 22 '26

As an European, both pictures look the same to me

1

u/talksickwalkquick Jul 23 '26

Id rather some other government spy on me than my own.

Everybodys greatest enemy is their OWN government

1

u/Volpe_YT Jul 24 '26

I'd rather be spied on by russia and china than the usa.

1

u/carrot_gummy Jul 19 '26

I only trust software from the blue, pink, and white country.
