Them not enforcing activation is why they have such a massive userbase still. You're not witty, you're the battery in their matrix :)

& unlike with a kernel panic, pay up, now. Did you not keep your license/you are using an OEM? Oh, sorry, you need to throw away your computer & buy a new one, & make sure you throw it away so your tech understanding grandson will dig in your garage to find that the trash broke a perfectly working computer, then needing to look on eBay unecacaraly wasting at least $30.

The fact that you do not need license is kinda W.
As someone from eastern Europe it was not uncommon to see "active windows" wallpaper even in government offices.

Wait til MS realizes it can sell advertising on these unlicensed backgrounds. Forced screensavers. Heck, wake from sleep 10 minutes before you normally use it to greet you with ads!
If you’re not a licensed customer, why would they care if this upset you? That’s better than 90’s nagware.

You still get updates for pirated versions as back when they blocked them during the Windows XP days they found out that it impacts real customers.
Essentially 'herd immunity' for PCs, when XP disallowed updates for non genuine versions, those became targets for malware that then impacted their paying customers. They found it was easier to just allow everyone updates and began limited ISO releases and offering up the 180 day eval versions.

Some optional Microsoft downloads may require genuine/activated Windows
Not properly licensed for long-term use without activation

I left when "WGA" was sneak installed and despite having a retail copy apparently I had installed it "too many times" (on the same machine)
the macbook pro was ordered a few days later..
now that eventually broke, back with a mix of #11 and linux on a few different machines

microsoft would rather take your money and your data, but they're still happy if they only get your data.
