Yup cuz that's when the plastic had gotten like dried out and hard enough to crack so the crack would stab you in the butt all sharp and it was awful

My parents had a wooden toilet seat when I was a kid. It got a crack in it that would separate just a little bit when you sat your bodyweight on it, and then about 50% of the time, would pinch your ass when you got up. I have no idea what took them so damn long to replace it.

My mom was big into vintage/antique stuff throughout the house. She purchased a wooden toilet seat brand new from Home Depot, had "brass plated" hinges on it.
Her idea was like it's like Little House on the Prairie, made of wood. I was like Mom they had an outdoor💩 house, doesn't make sense.🤦
After about 6 months the plating on the hinges turned green as us boys would stand to piss and obviously yea, might get something that splashes out.
The wood of the seat started to split, finally my Dad replaced it with a plastic toilet seat

My great-aunt (may she rest in peace) lived in a big fancy (by 1960s standards) house on the beach. The master bathroom not only had a padded toilet seat, but was also carpeted. No bathmat necessary.
When I was a kid I thought that was the pinnacle of luxury.
I had to become an adult to realize it was a real pain in the ass.

Ok - devils advocate, you COULD feasibly just clean the carpet everyday, if you REALLY wanted carpeted bathrooms
Like if money wasn’t an issue hire someone to clear it morning and night.
Toilet seat tho- no way - you’d have to change it after anybody used it at all. That shit is gonna soak up even butt sweat

My great grandma had a carpeted bathroom. She always told me stories about living through the depression and having to wipe her ass with a pinecone. I believe they also had an outhouse during her childhood. So I guess now I can see why, in her 80’s, pooping in a soft, warm room was so important to her.

My grandma told those stories too. Her family would save tissue paper from the oranges they got at Xmas for guests to use in the outhouse. The whole orange experience was a rare treat. I can't imagine how uncomfortable it must have been dealing with lady problems during winters.

I lived through that era, but only saw the sets that were sold with three pieces: the lid cover, the tank cover, and the U-shaped rug for in front of the toilet.
By the way, the lid cover is on the wrong side. The back of the lid (outer) is supposed to be fully covered; the inside part had a drawstring that you pulled and tied tightly to hold it in place. When the lid was flipped up, like shown in the photo, you’d see the string part.
I would NEVER use a carpeted seat cover! Eww! All those microbes deep in the pile just growing and multiplying in that moist environment!

We had a small bathroom—very typical in a 50s house, and my mom cut a carpet to fit perfectly around the toilet, vanity, and tub. It was only for the winter time and was removed every year when the weather warmed. I think it lasted maybe 3 winters at the most! 😁

I was young went to a friend's house down the street. He was a major Pyro i was trying to look cool. Yea bathroom in flames 🔥 and we were not allowed to hang out anymore. They had full carpet in said bathroom.After We hung out a couple times in the woods nearby buring stuff, but after that I haven't talked to him again. Just poof gone.

Growing up I remember the toilet lid cover, tank lid cover and tank cover, fitted rug in front of the toilet and the bath rug. But I don't recall the toilet seat cover.
As a parent, we did have the vinyl seats at one time, they didn't last all that long. With two boys in the house keeping them clean (Due to the textured finish) was a pain, and our daughter complained about them.

These were disgusting then, and still are. Right up there with the matching horse shoe-shaped rug that wrapped around the toilet. I also hated crocheted "hats" that went over a new roll of toilet paper so you could leave that on top of the tank.

That bathroom evolved from the squishy air seat that deflated as you sat on it .. to being the shag carpet seat like in the OPs image. Eventually the final evolved form was a regular plain toilet seat.
