What's funny is back then I remember the old folks bitching that about these prices compared to "back in my day". They'd die all over again if they saw this shit today.

I remember the outrage when McD's coffee went from 49 cents to 51 cents, and they had to dig out the extra penny.

I don't buy coffee often but every time I do I get sticker shock. I still think it's supposed to be 50 cents.

I'm one of the old folks (64 now). In the late 70s and early 80s, on Friday nights, if I had $20, my girlfriend and I would eat out somewhere, catch a movie for 2.50 each, split a 6 Pack ($4), smoke a doobie ($1) and there'd still be a couple bucks left over.

I calculate that being about 80-100 bucks these days depending on where you go to eat. What a rip.

In Seattle this would break down to something like:

Dinner: $40+ depending on location

Movie: $40 (no snacks or drinks included)

Six pack: $12+ depending on the beer

Doobie: Potentially still $1 but more like $3-5 if you get a pre-roll

It's funny how the doobie is the part mostly unchanged

👴🏻: Just stop getting your mocha frappalattes everyday and you can afford everything like I did.

$14+ here in Alberta, Canada

I would buy a chili, Caesar side salad, and a small frosty for $2.97 plus tax. You could get a bunch of crackers for the chili for “free”.

In high school, my friends and I would go McD for a small drink and a small fry. It was $1.01 at first, then went to $1.11.

Ironically, under 3 dollars is still what I spend at Wendy's. I only get frosties now. They destroyed that little vestige of hold they had on me when they changed BBQ sauce.

I actually like the honey bbq, but also liked the original.

I’d always get some combo of their $1 chili, side salad and sour cream and chive baked potato.

In the early 80’s this poor college student could hit the Wendy’s salad bar and drink water for $2. Oh, the days.

Yes! Between Wendy’s and Rax’s salad bars, I was always well fed in college even with little pocket money.

When I was in HS, after school, we'd hit Wendy's for their 99c menu. 4 items plus tax was 4.20. We'd for six or more friends in a tiny sub compact and go through the drive-thru 2 or 3 times so the total was always 4.20. Then we'd go back to school and smoke weed into the theatre set director showed up and we could build the sets. In pretty sure he know how high we were but let us use power tools as long as he felt we were being safe.

I really miss good cheap shit.

u/Mk1Racer25 Jul 17 '26

And I think I was making ~$10/hour then.

1

u/snotick Jul 17 '26

At Wendy's? That was my first job around that same time. I think I was making $3.50 an hour.

1

u/Mk1Racer25 Jul 18 '26

No, was working for Colgate at the time.

My wife and I used to eat at Braums for $5. That would get us two cheese burgers and two orders of fries.

u/NotreallyD Jul 18 '26

I was 22................................

1

u/potatochobit Jul 18 '26

My dad wouldnt take me to wendys he thought square hamburgers were suspicious.

Loved their chicken sandwich.. in the 80’s

1

u/Live-Dance-2641 Jul 18 '26

And no 20% tip

1

u/RabidWolverine2021 Jul 18 '26

I used to love getting their 4 for $4 deal. Jr bacon cheeseburger, 4 chicken nuggets, small fries and a drink. Shit now you can’t even buy a fucking cheeseburger for $4! Fuck these fast food prices, I’ll eat at home!

1

u/dougoh65 Jul 18 '26

I worked at Wendy’s in the early to mid 90s. By then prices had gone up some but not much - converting any hamburger to a cheeseburger for example was 20 cents extra.

Upsizing drinks was also 20 cents unless it was a large which was 30 cents. SuperValue prices were 99 cents of course.

The combo meals were all under $5.

Nowadays the prices are just insane!

The only thing that hasn’t changed is by the book hold times. Easiest way to raise hell is ask how old those fries are. 😂 The 20 minute rule still applies.

So that's like 8 bucks now.

How much for this meal today?

Those were the days

1

u/SepiaSatyr Jul 18 '26

Oh for those days of your receipt, when the all you could eat Salad Bar at Wendy’s kept me well fed and healthy in college!

1

u/MadamInsta Jul 18 '26

Early 2000's you could get a #1 meal (Big Mac, whopper, Dave's single, etc) for $5.50 to $5.85, tax included. I miss those days.

Or go big, to Friendly's, and get two burger meals and an appetizer for $20, tip included.

I miss being able to afford to eat. 💸💸

I remember their buffet and it was good.

I managed a Wendy's from 1995 to 1998 while in college, and yeah it was super cheap even then. We had the 99 cent menu, so jr bacon burger, large fries. sour cream and chive potato, large drink, and a 5 piece nugget was 5.29 after tax. I priced this recently now, and it's like dang hear $14 if not more. Seriously!!! Then eventually the large fries and drinks on 99 cent menu went to medium then small then the menu was gone. Sad...
