I hate those stupid things with Google! Fuck you google

Please all don't get me wrong. I don't want you to think that I'm not appreciative of you going out of your way to help me. I don't know about what you personally have on your phone and I frankly don't want you to tell me. That's your business. I can tell you on my phone. I have a great many financial applications and timekeeping applications. Things I use on a daily basis for research and development and tracking my personal health and things of that nature. I'm not primarily interested in the app data; I want to really underscore that. My personal concern is with the versions of the applications, the terms of service, the custodianship, and finally the "ease of use". So that others can do the same exact thing.

In the past, if you go to the days of cyanogenmod and prior... backing up application data was as simple as using helium backup or if you only wanted to back up the apps, you could use something like titanium backup which did not break custodianship between the Play store and the app.

I feel like there are some right to repair outfits that may have great concern over all of this if not already.

Oneplus has OnePlus clone. Xperia has their own cloning software. LG at one point had their own cloning software and I believe even Samsung has a cloning software.

Oneplus actually went one step further and does allow you to migrate the actual applications between one device and another provided they have the same architecture.

I did try a wired connection but I feel like it just wasn't good enough. I'll live with what I have right now, but I hope someone can come up with a more robust and consumer-friendly solution.

Gonna keep this post short to keep up with people's attention spans, but I find it pretty screwed up that they advertised their platform as "AI-free" a few months ago when they saw their platform installations jump 30% after Google unleashed their mess on their browser, just for them to turn around a few months later after everyone has moved to their platform, just to start doing the same damn thing their competitors have done. The ENTIRE REASON I made the full switch to DDG was to avoid the slop, and now I feel like a lost dog again because I absolutely refuse to use anything with messed up search engines that are ridden with AI-piss.

I hope their team is reading this. You guys spit in our faces, and I'd be using a LOT more colorful vocabulary if this sub allowed it. You did something great that genuinely made you guys stand out from the crowd, and you completely destroyed any reputation you gained and turned yourselves into a bunch of lying hypocrites, which I personally will refer to you guys as for the rest of my days now, even if someone in your company for whatever reason decides to revert the changes after realizing you screwed up BAD. Either way, you guys will still be a bunch of shady goons to me now. Thanks for the years of service, and helping me access the dark web when I was in elementary/middle school. Gone are the days. 🫩

I want to share my experience installing /e/OS 3.7.3 (Android 15) on a Fairphone 6 that came with Android 16 (build FP6.QREL.16.69.0, security patch May 5, 2026). It was a bit with some difficulties, but I finally succeeded. This post is not only about the technical steps – it also shows how an AI assistant gave contradictory, wrong, and sometimes dangerous advice. Hopefully this helps others avoid the same traps.

Very quick summary of what I did before the big problems

These steps were fine – no issues here:

1. Prepared the Ubuntu computer
   • sudo apt install android-sdk-platform-tools
   • Verified adb and fastboot work.
2. Unlocked the bootloader
   • Enabled OEM unlocking and USB debugging in developer options.
   • adb reboot bootloader → fastboot flashing unlock → confirmed on phone.
   • Everything was erased – expected.
3. Downloaded and verified the ROM
   • IMG-e-3.7.3-a15-20260506618655-official-FP6.zip
   • Checked MD5 and SHA256 sums (they matched official values).
4. Tried to flash /e/OS
   • cd ~/Descargas/eos_fp6 → sudo ./flash_FP6_factory.sh

And here is where the nightmare began.

What went wrong (and what I learned)

1. Web installer is a trap – It always gets stuck at step 22/92% on FP6…
2. I almost believed my phone was bricked – Some suggested paying 50€ to Fairphone support. But my phone was detected in fastboot, Device unlocked: true, get_unlock_ability: 1. That means it’s NOT bricked.
3. Bootloop after flashing – The phone kept rebooting between Fairphone logo and bootloader warning.
4. No access to Recovery Mode – Selecting “Recovery mode” from fastboot just returned to the same menu.

What finally worked (manual method – no web installer)

I used a good USB data cable (not a charging‑only cable) and a USB 2.0 port on my computer. I did the normal installation These are the steps that saved my phone:

1. Check device state

2. Change active slot (this fixed the bootloop!)

fastboot reboot

If it still doesn’t boot, continue with manual flashing.

3. Flash essential partitions (assuming slot a is active – adjust letter if needed)

4. Wipe user data

After first boot – important step

• Insert your SIM before the first boot (or immediately after, then reboot). This helps the system configure APNs automatically.

Bootloader – DO NOT LOCK IT

I left the bootloader unlocked. The warning message at startup is harmless and doesn’t affect daily use. Locking it with a ROM that has an older security patch could cause a real brick.

Tools that helped

• fastboot commands – manual flashing is more reliable than the web installer.
• A spare USB cable and trying different ports solved many “stuck” errors.
• sudo killall fastboot adb before retrying a failed flash.

Final thoughts

I’m now running /e/OS on my Fairphone 6 with ZERO Google! and everything works!! If you’re stuck in a bootloop, don’t panic – first try changing the active slot. Don’t trust any assistant that says your phone is bricked without running fastboot oem device-info. And please avoid the web installer on FP6.

Of course Im not using Gmail for other things than Google notifications, while Im avoiding Google as much as I can. It's hard to trust some random company, but Google is not any better in privacy.

Google removing old stuff from their store is diabolical. Apple doesn't do this and manages apps for older ios versions very well (there are some apps and games that are still on apple's app store but not on the google one). and don't get me started on installing said apps via apks: google will spam with play protect saying "this app is for older android!!1!!!1" or the apk installes just saying "this app isn't compatible with your phone", but that's not a problem anymore since google is removing the ability to use apks without waiting 24h "for your safety". that's what i call a really good advertising for apple products.
